VERY mixed opinions on this chapter It seems Togashi totally wrote himself into a corner. By making Borksen such an intelligent character, it feels cheap that she forgot to ask such an obvious question and lost the game. What would've been better is if she'd have won through sheer luck, but then for personal reasons, decided to join Morena anyway. Also, the card game fell flat in the end. Too much time was spent on it, it wasn't that fascinating to begin with, and it took away from time that could've been spent following the Benjamin situation more closely. Bit of an L here. I suppose in terms of the "neatest" writing Tog's accomplished - the phantom troupe arc will never be beaten. What could've been cool is if Nobunaga then made an ability that activates only if he wins Borksen's card game. He then wins it, activates the ability, then picks the yes card of his own accord. He then speeds his way through the rankings with an ability that allows him to mod it to suit his own needs. He could even befriend Borksen along the way and recruit her to the troupe once she reaches level 100.

This is the peak of Hunter x Hunter and the best time to be a fan. Not only do we have Togashi seemingly in the best physical health he's been in in over a decade putting out more content than we've dared believe was possible, not only because the story is at the best, most gripping, most insane point it's EVER been in and everything about this arc building up to a point that it's ALREADY arguably superior to Chimera Ant which is arguably the greatest arc of shounen manga of all time and is highly likely to go up even further from here, but because we have you, a guy who I've watched and enjoyed the content of for One Piece but whose truest, deepest passion seems interlocked with HxH and who is able to not only help us digest this grandiose, complex story but keep the hype and community going strong for however long the hiatuses take.

Togashi's artistic depiction is something else. Whenever he uses less detail (like the sketched background this chapter, or Gon crying to Ging about Kite) it's to emphasize a character breaking down in some way, so saying Morena's people are losing their humanity is a perfect way to put it! These panels always give me so much anxiety, cause it feels almost as if his hand was trembling when making it (as an artist I highly appreciate these decision). It's a deliberate choice to perfectly reflect the mood he intends to. When one feels fear, you don't hyperfocus on the details of what is making you feel that, so panels like that capture the very nature of anxiety and fear, the feeling of having adrenaline rush through your veins as you can't find a single way to get out of a dire situation. Definitely my favorite panel this chapter! Edit: typo

I really love the narrative device of setting up all these dominos to start knocking each other down only to skip to the point where all the dominoes are scattered and now we need to figure out exactly what we missed. I get why people might he disappointed with not seeing that all happen in real time, but for me this is a much more engaging way to tell a narrative. Trying to piece together what happened and what is happening now as a result is something I find really fun and exciting and it makes me more excited for the next batch of chapters than I have ever been.

i'd like to point out that the palace invasion officially started on chapter 263 and ended on chapter 314 (after meruem wakes up komugi with "let's play!") thats 51 chapters, and it all took place in one night despite the fact that this is the beginning of the end for the succession war, i still don't see it ending ANYTIME soon. i think we'll go well past chapter 430 and it may even extend to the 450-470s depending on how togashi handles the arc the spider's arc is defo going to end here - (i dont see what their point would be if they went to the dc) so we have ALL of their deaths to go through silent majority - that could have alr been resolved, we havent seen what happened in pika's nen class entire thing with camilla - she's taken a backseat so far but i dont think we should underestimate her, she's the second prince, has a broken af nen ability and the havenots. togashi is prob saving her for later borksen is going to kill a prince (or multiple), thats the only way i see togashi paying off hyping her up for 4 entire chapters i doubt the zodiacs are gonna do nothing as the black whale erupts into chaos, so we're prob gonna see most of them contribute to something at least saiyuu traitor plotline, which i honestly forgot of up until just now where tf are ging and pariston, rest of expedition team yeah, the succession war's definitely not ending anytime soon EDIT: someone in the comments corrected an incorrect statement i made about benjamin's condition. it seems he has 9.5 hours until he becomes bedridden, and he'll die shortly after that, mb

Honestly, I don’t care if we never get an ending for Hunter Hunter if it means Togashi keeps his health and has a long, peaceful life. It would hurt to not have a true conclusion to one of the most interesting stories ever written but Togashi deserves a great life. so I wanna put a theory out there, cuz i think Togashi has hinted at what has happened during the last night involving the 1st and 9th princes, and if im right Halkenburg and might are dead, with Benjamin using this as this chance to invoke martial law. so the primary part of this theory revolves around the ability of Benjamin's guardian spirit beast, which is the only beast we have seen and not had the ability told to us, making me think its effects are gonna be a twist, another important thing is that the guardian spirit beasts respond to the personality and desires of the princes. from what we know about Benjamin though i highly doubt its an offensive beast, purely because he already has insane physical power and wouldn't want to rely on something he cant see or control to win for him, he seems too proud for that, however the other thing we know about him is his desire to protect those loyal to him and those he cares about, so i think the effect could be more defensive or supportive. however the thing which in my eyes confirmed its ability was chapter 402, when Fugetsu enters Benjamin's room and has the nen spirits surrounding her temporarily exorcised by the first prince's GSB, which led me to thinking that its ability could be to negate any nen curses or evil spirits in Benjamin's presence, with a most likely condition that it has to be someone Benjamin cares about, and if this is the case its possible that when Halkenburg attempts to attack Benjamin in might's body the GSB removed the effects of Grimmel the Dissonance as it could count as a nen curse, which would cause the death of Halkenburg, however it would also most likely kill might as it wouldn't switch him back into his own body, leading to a situation where might is dead and Benjamin has solid proof another prince tried to kill him, leading to martial law. the only issue i could think of with this theory was that guardian spirit beasts cant attack princes or other guardian spirit beasts, but there is multiple loopholes that would allow this to happen, for 1 we already saw Benjamin's GSB affect a prince (refer to Fugetsu) so its possible that affects that are not attacks, such as removing a nen curse, could be seen as only helpful and allowed withing the rules of the succession war, since it isn't technically an attack. on top of this, Halkenburg is technically not a prince right now, being in the body of someone not participating in the war, and we don't know if his GSB followed him or stuck with his body, so basically he could be seen as just might rather then a prince and therefore ok to attack. either way something big happened with Benjamin, and i don't think halkenburg can switch bodies with him due to not having nearby allies, so the most likely answer is Halkenburg is dead, and i think this is how it happened. I'm curious what you all think, and let me know if I overlooked something.

Good theory, but I don’t really seen *any* way that Halkenburg’s nen ability would be considered a curse. Typically, nen curses are punishments or have to be activated via many conditions. Halkenburg’s ability isn’t really a punishment or detrimental to the person who it is applied to. What I mean is, getting body-swapped doesn’t necessarily have to be negative. It’s just the way that Halkenburg chooses to use it. Therefore, I don’t think it can be considered a nen curse.

I was thinking something similar with Benjamins GSB, specifically about when he was poisoned, that when Halkenburg approached Benjamin in his friends body, Benjamins GSB removed the control Halkenburg had over his friends body (with the GSB removing control from his friends body bc benjamin cares about him deeply) but not before halkenburg got close enough to benjamin to poison him, and in that moment Benjamin has that bittersweet realization that he has reason to invoke martial law, but now at the cost of his life and technically at the hands of his close friend, but id like to think that he took it to the chin like a Chad because to me Benjamin is almost selfless in a way so long as his ideals become king and not necessarily himself, BUT this entire thing hangs on his GSB ability having to do with removing Nen curses or somehow not allowing those he cares for to be manipulated by nen in his presence which we dont know how likely it is knowing togashi(Like you mentioned with Fugetsu)

Something I noticed about Ging and Pariston's names - they might be references to persian islamic folklore. Ging's name in the japanese is Jin. The jinn are perhaps the most popular creatures that originate from islam and have been referenced in every form of media. They are often thought of as antagonistic and a lot of the original literature is the origin of that, where they are often monsters or villains. They are made of smokeless fire and are often described and depicted as monstrous and wild(often hairy and with tusks, especially in persian miniatures, much like a boar) in islamic sources. However, the jinn are also the subjects of islam and the prophets sent to mankind were also sent to them, as a result of which many jinn live pious lives. I.e. a rough exterior and questionable character hiding an ultimately good nature, much like a certain deadbeat. The jinn are also often shapeshifters to some extent, and Ging is able to recreate any punching hatsu he sees while hiding his actual hatsu. Pariston, while his name is an anagram of Paris Hillton, also includes pari, which in persian sources are benevolent and beautiful beings(and who gets sparkles around whenever he is on screen), analogous to fairies in western folklore, said to live in a place called Paristan. Much like fairies, while they are seen as benevolent, a lot of the sources that defined their current character depicted them as malevolent and dangerous charmers. I.e. a beautiful and charismatic exterior hiding a sinister underbelly.

Prince Benjamin suspected Hulkenburg's counterattack from the beginning , not letting his right hand man return without a confirmation of Hulkenburg's death. I think the sound Borksen heard, of the staircase closing is actually Halkenburgs rumbling, having just before that kissed Morena it would work well for her to be half awekend. If Halkenburg fired a shoot after martial law was decleared it is either not directly becouse of him or he was fleeing. Benjamin specifically called out Halkenburg, wich i don't think he would have done, even if he figured what had happened accusing a "dead" prince makes no sense. Halkenburgs followers probably started a riot, resulting in martial law so Balsamico (Halkenburg) could rush in to Benjamin and he shoot. If his posession arrow is his own ability more or less granted by his spirit beast instead of a direct ability of the beast he could attack Benjamin, and since Benjamin isn't dead yet he still has his beast. Lastly Kaiser took part of Halkenburgs plan, and seems to see the ending. I don't think Halkenburg just planed to kill Benjamin and then die.

Yeaaaaah, I am getting kind of ansty for something significant to happen. One of the biggest criticisms of Hunter x Hunter is that there are too many exposition dumps and narration, slowing down the pace, which can even be annoying when binge reading the manga or binge watching the anime. In fact, when I was watching the Chimera Ant arc, I got so impatient waiting for Netero to fight Meruem that I just skipped episodes until I got to it, then when I saw it I went back to where I left off. This slow pace and exposition dumping for TEN YEARS is just agonizing and I am frankly just annoyed and really done with these princes. I got sold on the Dark Continent, Ging, Paristan, and Beyond, but now I have to sit around for over a decade reading about Broccoli Man and Balsamic Vinaigrette.

The main characters of HxH have a lot of parallels to journey to the west if you stop to think about it. Both Kurapika and Killua draw parallels to Sun Wukong in their respective stories. If we try to find equivalents for the whole crew while they are together, they wouldnt be perfect, as the characters often have traits of multiple characters from journey and switch the role they are playing. Gon would be roughly equivalent to Tang Shuanzang/Tripitaka, being the "monk" of the group, focused on improving his physical enchancement ability like the steriotypical shaolin monk or the monk class in rpgs, though Tang is not a physical fighter, rather refining himself on the path to buddhahood. The two are also very impulsive characters, though it is rarely ever pointed out in Tang's case. While others are impulsive in general, both the "monks" are impulsive in the pursuit of their goals, which is how they end up always caught in the line of fire. Gon also has aspects of Sun Wukong, specifically with the monkey king's ability to take on a monstrous giant form, which we can consider analogous to Gon' adult form, in which he rivals nen monsters like the royal ants and Netero, who in general represents heaven in HxH, which we can relate back to Wukong calling himself "The great sage equal to heaven" and proving the worth of his title when the jade emperor refuses to recognise it, needing the intervention of the Buddha to seal him. Leorio is also fairly easy to place, as his greediness and personality both reflect the pig demon Zhu Bajie, but he also gets monents where his wisdom and knowledge shine through, filling the role Sha Wujing. When the whole group is together, Kurapika generally fills the role of Sha Wujing as the reasoable of the group, while Killua fills the role of Sun Wukong, being the dangerous teammate with a propensity to kill his opponents, a number of powers which are not related to the main system(Killua's Zoldyck techniques are not related to nen, the pilgrims in journey are buddhists, but all of Sun Wukong's powers originate from his past with taoist heaven), can shapeshift(the claw for Killua, the various transformations of Wukong) and he has his equivalent to the Six-eared macaque, being his brother, much like the macaque and the stone monkey being two of the four monkeys not bound by the rules of other forms of being, who is also a shapeshifter, with the macaque being so good at shapeshifting that nobody was able to tell who the real Wukong is and he even responded to the binding prayer on Wukong, feeling the pain of the constricting headpiece. Killua and Wukong were also both bound by something permanently attached to their heads - Killua was being mind controlled through the needle, Wukong is punished by his new adornments constricting by Tang whenever he acts up or kills someone. When Kurapika is alone or the center of the story, he is the equivalent of Wukong, specifically sharing his red eyes, which Wukong got when heaven boiled him alive to try and extract his immortality. Much like Killua, he has his own analogous six-eared macaque in the form of Chrollo, with "shapeshifting" in this case taking the form of stolen abilities, and their status as being special in the universal order is established by being, well, specialists. While Wukong spends his entire story bound by Tang and Guanyin, Kurapika has bound himself with a blade in his heart to enforce the death condition. Kurapika also left everything to learn nen in the forest with a teacher, exactly how Wukong left his kingdom to learn his daoist abilities from a sage in the wilderness. The equivalent of Guanyin is, surprisingly, not the guy using her statue(100-armed Kanon), but jester molester. Hisoka and Guanyin are both guides and deus-ex-machina for their stories' casts, and are both driven by love - Guanyin is driven by her love of humanity and Hisoka by his love of battle. Guanyin is also very close with Wukong and he is the one who calls on her for help, with Hisoka being involved in the stories of the three characters who take elements from Wukong(Killua and Gon are his fruits he is waiting to ripen, Kurapika is his ally against the spiders). Hisoka's bathing scene with the rest of the team teleporting to his location in that very moment in Greed Island may be a loose reference to Wukong going to Guanyin's ocean domain to find her without makeup, her hair down and in her gardening clothes after her goldfish ran away. Astrology plays a big part in jttw, and while the chinese zodiac don't appear like in HxH, the lunar mansions do.

I love how Botobai is the only one who doesn't raise his hands, he just keeps them down, but open. He is not intimidated at all by the soldiers and Benjamin allows it.
