Candle Stand | S1 E10

Norm travels to the Hancock Shaker Village in western Massachusetts to gather ideas for his own design for a candle stand. Returning to his workshop, Norm shows home woodworkers how to build an exact replica using power tools, including a lathe, router and band saw.

I built this table over 20 years ago now. Cutting the dovetail slots into the base really kicked my butt, but I got it done. The table is in use today in my house, proudly displaying some mementos of mine. Norm got me my start...his techniques are what worked for him at the time, given the tools and materials available to him. I didn't use his bandsaw jig trick because I only had a router in my shop at the time, so I made a circle cutting jig for my router and got the same result. I can't thank Norm enough for giving me my start into a hobby I never would have looked twice at if it weren't for him.

What a classic episode. The Shopsmith was featured prominently during the first season and later seasons it was used as a duplicator lathe. This episode even features the freestanding Shopsmith Pro Planer in use. Russ, if you are monitoring these comments yourself, I was the manager of the Shopsmith store in Chelmsford who had all of those tools delivered to your shop. Fun times. Scott

I made this candle stand in woods class in high school early 90's. I had the episode recorded I let my teacher watch it. Next day teacher comes in says he issues with some of things Norm did, I chuckled thinking do you have your own show. He told me I could go ahead and make it but stated it would hold a glass of mike. I replied thank God its called a candle stand and not a milk stand. Still holding that same candle 33yrs later.

I remember this being the first episode of NYW that I saw, and I was amazed. I didn’t know anything much about woodworking but I loved how he built the jig to get the legs at the correct angle. I was hooked!

Thanks for bringing back these programs. I have always enjoyed watching Norm work his magic. I have a small shop that is Shopsmith centered so seeing his use of them is of special interest.

Gluing mine up right now. It's walnut and I see my mistakes but it'll be done as soon as I screw on the top... then finish it.

Those early water-powered belt-driven tools are fascinating, and seeing you make the pretty candle table with your modern tools is fun.

We made a similar table in junior high shop class. Our design was a little less elegant: the top was an octagon, the legs were attached with dowels and it was made from pinewood. I wish I still had that little table but I don't remember what happened to it. It would practically be an antique, now!

Nostalgia.......Norm inspired me to start woodworking. I now rout a flat on the column base - no need to round over the dovetail on the leg. Probably best to use a threaded insert in a slot to secure the top for expansion / contraction.

I bought a ShopSmith back in 2003. The table saw was terrible. The bandsaw was good and I purchased several other parts on eBay. I sold it in 2013 because I bought tools to replace it. I always wondered what that machine was he was using in this episode and others in the beginning. Still hoping to meet Norm one day. Thanks for putting these all on here.

I'd love to build this, but I don't even have the tools the Shakers had. I've only been able to work with small kits, but I'm hopeful someday to have a real place with tools. Even water-powered!

The Shakers were a bit before the incandescent light bulb...the museum people probably closed up all the doors and windows so Norm couldn't pay too much with the machinery. If you can't see it, you can't touch it.

I bought a biscuit jointer brand new and I and my father had been watching the show for about 3 yrs. The jointer had just been invented and was really expensive when we bought ours. I am enjoying watching these. I know many woodworking inventions came from the great surge in people doing woodwork.

I remember I bought a set of 9.6 battery powered tools. I even bought the tile saw. I loved those tools. Thanks Norm and Russ for putting these on youtube. My dad is now gone and I think of him while watching these episodes.
