I really apricate your videos as I am desperately trying to prepare to play Romeo in a high school production of Romeo and Juliet. Nobody else on KZbin really gives as solid advice as you do sir! Thank you, and Godbless!

If i- as most people would - you find it hard to keep working at Romeo, try to us any spare time you suddenly have, keep our script with you always, and you may find bits of it suddenly become easier. It's easy for professional actors to keep working hard (some of them anyway) because they're being paid and they want to keep their audiences interested and happy, but if you just know your lines incredibly well and speak clearly - you will be doing all that many famous actors have done with the part. The lines DO make sense, it just takes time. JOhn

As always, thank you so much for taking the time to do these. Even if it's something i already know, being reminded of it gets me to rethink about it and possibly taking something new away from it

Over a year ago I watched all your videos and rewatched my favourite ones, because I think they are really really helpful. Back then I didn't do theatre, acting or anything, but I wanted to so bad. Now I'm in a high school play, but I want to be an actor maybe more than anything. I don't know if that makes sense. Thank you

The only thing you have to remember is that most actors face frequent unemployment, and the only (only) way to make it worthwhile is by developing your talent by going to classes and probably to a serious drama course. You may then find there is a 'type' of part you can easily play, or a 'field - theatre/classical/ modern/ or tv or film - which you like so much that you will put up with the difficulties of it all. But if you don't work harder than the average actor, the business is a difficult experience! John

Our brains r like computers our dreams from one scene to the next
@NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 5 күн бұрын
Yes, it may feel like that, but - unlike a computer - our brains can see the CONNECTIONS between sentences, so that when we remember the first one the rest may just 'follow' if we really understand the connections. I've coached experienced Shakespeare actors who only really needed help working out the connections between their lines. J.

And tried in so many different ways, that one can then 'forget' what a next line is going to be, because it will just COME. If it is connected, if the understanding of lines is enough, then you don't need to 'remember' - so you don't forget! J.

thank you. I was in my first play in October and found it difficult to approach line learning. this is fantastic info and makes total sense.

Almost every actor in the world (privately) talks about learning lines being difficult, and - since 'acting' is supposed to be enjoyable - the hard work which leads to 'knowing' them, is what successful actors secretly do! So it's great you're discovering this early, and it's the only thing needed to leave us 'free' on a stage or by a camera. John.

When doing an emotional monologue which involves crying, how can I make myself cry and tear up because whenever I think of a sad memory to make me cry it’s never enough to make me cry since I don’t really have a sad enough memory or thought to make me cry
@NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 6 ай бұрын
There are 3 ways of your managing to do this, but without knowing you (and in this space) I can't say which you should use. But the best, and happiest way is not to 'force' yourself to try and cry, because that won't work! What counts is that you study the lines to understand exactly what the lines mean, not looking for distress. Find out what the character wants, how much, and - roughly - when. This serious study is what leading actors do, so - unless you are one of them - you're asking a lot of yourself to manage it (They get paid huge sums of money to study more deeply!) But study is the only way. I can't give you a free session, as I've done enough of that this year, but come to me or another coach to help you see what the lines are truly about, OR just see that this is not about some 'sad' memory'. I can tell you that. It is about understanding some truth in the lines. Or fake it and hide our eyes. John Windsor-Cunningham

Thanks very much for kind words. If you have a fairly simple question you can just ask on my website (better than here) and no charge for that. If you want a session for an audition the same 'CONTACT PAGE' on the website ( Windsor-Cunningham.com ) gets me, or my direct email ( jwcactor @yahoo.com ) - or, - if you don't have time just try to work out what the opening lines really mean, which is mainly what I would help with, and try different meanings. And make sure you have had some parallel experience which makes that meaning truthful.John.

I sense the tension but did you notice your voice tense up just a tad when that vehicles siren went off? NYC it’s common but you were aware of it right away! Thanks for kind remarks. Yes, not sure why I've not got a knighthood, some prejudice about my age? If you've seen number 10 of my MadEnglishman.com videos you may, of course, change your mind. (A few people have taken the Fred Astaire advice seriously. Maybe that's the reason for no knighthood. An Oscar would be quite nice. Anyway, best back to you,, John Windsor-Cunningham
