I loved your presentation (I’m a flutist). The cat was a great touch. Cindy Phelps played the Debussy Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp with me on my MM recital. She was, of course, amazing and flawless.

Helicore Strings have a thinner gauge to make bowing on them easier & they make a High E String for the 5 string Violas.

Great video! Although did I miss something? What rosin do you use Rebecca?
@NewYorkPhilharmonic3 жыл бұрын
From Becky: Oops! How could I forget rosin! I‘m not super picky, but I currently use “Andrea.” Specifically, “Sanctus.” Frankly, until you asked, I couldn’t have told you what it’s called🤭!

Victor Borge would talk about his first instrument was the viola. He said the main difference between a violin and a viola is that the viola will burn longer.

if that's how you tune a viola, my respect for the tribe has increased.

I’d love to see a video about adjusting to such a large instrument. Lots of great and ambitious viola players are short.

Do you like Hindemith? Do you tell violinist jokes?
@NewYorkPhilharmonic3 жыл бұрын
From Becky: Love Hindemith, especially opus 11, #4. Violinist jokes are hardly worth the effort. Violinists don’t understand them 😉!

Oh yes, her "400-year-old Maggini viola." 🙄 It looks maybe 150 years old at most. Given that she acquired it from Christophe Landon (a known crook dealer), makes it even more suspect. Regardless, she makes a nice sound on it, even if it’s a Vuillaume shop viola or an English copyist who made the instrument from the 1870’s.
