So I've been singing quietly at home with my guitar for something like 20 years, just for my own enjoyment. All I've ever had is a straight tone, which sounded bland and unmusical to my ears, so i have never sang in front of anyone. Well holy crap now I have the beginnings of vibrato and my voice is beginning to sound more musical and pleasant. Thank you!

When I first started singing I couldn't add vibrato in my notes at all and about two years of working on it I can finally add a nice steady vibrato. I use all of the types of vibrato that he mentioned. But I mostly rely on my vocal chords to do the work. My advice is just to practice if you're a beginner. It will come more natural the more you practice the better your vibrato will get.
@justinmetcalfe99488 жыл бұрын

this is a great video! tbh, i listen to a lot of broadway songs, such as those from the soundtrack of les miserables and miss saigon. and i've noticed that lea salonga, the disney legend, has one of the best vibratos i've ever heard in female singers. i have a vibrato, but it literally is just me shaking my on my diaphragm the entire time, and it's weird lol. unfortunately, my voice is naturally raspy and more deep than miss salonga's, but i've always wanted to learn her vibrato technique. this is the best video i've seen so far, which would help me towards getting a nicer sounding vibrato. thank you so much!

I think I've invented a third type of vibrato: hybrid. Basically I start of with a pitch bend and then pulsate my breath but not by using my stomach but rather by using my vocal chord. (I recorded myself in slomo an no, there's little to no pitch bend after the initial note and no, my stomach doesn't move)
@NewYorkVocalCoaching Жыл бұрын
Cool! Different vibrato types can be combined to create hybrids. Just keep in mind that the vocal folds cannot pulsate breath. And you don't need your abs necessarily to pulsate the breath. Congrats on your discoveries! -NYVC

Every once in a while I can do a vocal cord vibrato like you show in this video, but it is always the slow one you showed. Nothing I seem to do speeds it up. It's very frustrating, but I am going to keep at it. I had quite a few years of voice coaching when I was in private school growing up, it unfortunately wasn't one on one, it was the whole class together, so still better than none and I can sing pretty well.(I think :D) Unfortunately we never really got into vibrato, and this was in grade school (K-8) and so obviously my voice has since changed. (I just turned 30..ahhh) I still really enjoy singing but I'm just missing the vibrato and it drives me crazy lol. Thanks for your videos though Justin, they are awesome and a big help.

I'm under the impression that what a vibrato really is in most singers (including Justin) is more of a oscillation of the tonal quality, i.e. of the composition of the overtones than just a plain going up and down with the pitch. Thoughts?
@heal2hair5175 жыл бұрын
Writing another comment after trying the exercise in the video. To me it seems like it was immediately helping. Not just with the pitch oscillation but also with the tone blending! I'm not able to do it so fast, because the "attacco" (or "on set" dk how to call it) has to be right on the vocal chords or it won't be precise, resulting poor, not projected and breathy. Makes me think that learning staccato fast would be a key to great singing...and vibrato :D

My belly still moves with every he! Is that the throat vibrato or I’m using my breath system? I also have a super fast vibrato that has always been there and I heard they called it goat vibrato! I’m so confused if that’s my natural vibrato because in order to slow down my vibrato I need to try so hard using my belly muscles and it’s even sometimes a wobble unlike the goat vibrato that’s organized.

The pathetic excuse for a vibrato I can produce came sort of naturally, simply watching other singers and trying to mimick the basic structure of their voice. But it would seem that I'm doing it wrong. It comes from my stomach, and often times I will breath or instinctively flex my abs and the note will sort of glitch, breaking awkwardly at the end. Any tips? If I don't flex the muscles in my stomach I can't really do a vibrato. Do I have to scrap it all together and start over? Oh, and one more thing, I sound very nasal-y whenever I do the head voice, especially on N, Y, and I sounds. It drives me insane. Trouble is that I sound like an Opera singer when I try to incorporate the chest voice, and I can't seem to mix them. I don't quite know why, but it is usually one or the other, or not at all. Again, looking for tips.
