Just for the sake of argument, let's say that Nex Benedict died from some very rare heart condition that had nothing to do with trauma. It's still tragic that the day before they died was not a happy day, filled with good memories with friends and family. No, it was marred with a physical fight and a trip to the ER. I mean, I'm more than old enough that dying in my sleep is a possible final outcome to my life and no one would be surprised. At my age, I think that's what most of my age cohort wants vs slowly dying of cancer or in a hospital after a massive stroke or whatever. It's awful that a 16 year old died so young but they could have had the teen version of dying in their sleep: a peaceful, happy day full of things their family could happily remember.

Interesting meditation, but unfortunately the bullying wasn't a single instance, but rather a pattern of terrifying abuse which many trans kids are familiar with, along with LGBTQ+ or other non conforming kids. You can of course see how unprotected they are in the response of the school and the cops. But even the cops have admitted that the way the released information was rot meant to bolster the school account. This child was not hurt by their pillow. And their murderers did not rise up out of a bed of flowers fully formed, with blood dripping from their fangs. It is the culture of the county, the police, the school board, who have been fixated on trans and gay kids, bullies themselves, who have spawned a rash of hatefilled teenagers, who will live out the end of their days, if not in prison, knowing that they deserve to be there.

@@edsmart5443 Yeah, I was a bisexual girl back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It wasn't easy then and I was so far in the closet that I wasn't even on the floor, I was hiding in the corner of the top shelf out of terror of what would happen to me if anyone at school ever found out. Back then, the idea that school administrations might even offer any protection was simply unimaginable to me. I mean, some of my teachers were openly racist to me (first Asian kid in school until I entered high school) and no one blinked an eye. No one saw anything wrong with a teacher standing me up in front of the entire class and saying blatantly racist things about me like I wasn't even capable of understanding them, so why would I even dream of a school administrator protecting an even more unacceptable secret of mine?

Owassa PD Lieutenant seems to be backtracking. Also, a toxicology can be routine as part of an autopsy and not necessarily a red flag, the way law enforcement claimed. I think it’s smart to cover all bases and do the toxicology but it doesn’t necessarily point to anything. Someone (hearsay) also said the student was given a shot in the hospital. All speculation when the results of the tox screen are not back yet. Lieutenant Nick Boatman of Owassa Police Department: Boatman said the medical examiner did not explicitly tell him that Nex "did not die from something as a result of that fight." But that's how Boatman interpreted the medical examiner's comments. Boatman also said the medical examiner "emphasized they are waiting for toxicology," which Boatman interpreted as "kind of a red flag." Boatman said he is "assuming when I get that [toxicology report] back, something's going to be there." … Boatman told Popular Information that the Owasso Police "reached out to the medical examiner's office to try to head off some of this national scrutiny." …Boatman confirmed that he did not contact Nex Benedict's family before releasing the statement that included preliminary information from the medical examiner.

I think the bullies should be held responsible for at least something. Trans, non-binart, or cis, doesn't matter. An innocent child died, and that is under no circumstance acceptable. Bullying is a plague upon society, as is discrimination. We need to end it, as soon as possible. I don't understand why Americans are so split on this. And the fact that people, no matter their opinion or political side, will toss the "no bullying" agenda away when it would further their own views, is just insane to me as a Norwegian.

You realize Nex was actually older than these younger girls who she had never even met before. Nex was the one who pursued them into the washroom and started the physical altercation. This just based on Nex's version without taking in account the younger girls version of what happened. This was a murder. Nex was ganged up on in the bathroom, beaten unconscious, and, despite being alert and ambulatory afterwards, was suspended for "fighting" and died the next day. Calling their death "not the result of trauma" is not a credible statement unless hard evidence is presented. The girls who murdered Nex should be held without bail pending trial. The relevant school officials and local law enforcement should also be held criminally liable. I am also mistrustful of the parents, since in many of these cases the parents are among the villains, but I admit that I don't know either way in this particular case. What I do know is that when queer people get murdered the far right never seems to care, and the people in authority always seem to conveniently sweep it under the rug. Maybe young folks will see this and learn that politics is not a "both sides" game, that it's not a game at all-that it's a matter of rights and even the very right to exist, and Republicans condone murder. Maybe young people will realize that, and get motivated to show up for elections, get motivated to organize in their communities, force their voices to be heard in civic affairs, and force the agents of fascism to go slither back under their rocks where they belong. It's the only way progress has ever happened. Here's hoping Nex's death isn't in vain.

A nice looking kid and a sad story. If I had been that kid's parents, I would have encouraged her not to identify as this strange new thing that is the latest cultural fad. Just be a girl and sort things out when you are older, I'd say. You don't need all the complexities and the clashes it brings. You need to do well in school. You don't need these distractions. When I was a kid, I was a girl who sometimes liked to do boy things. I was a bit "unladylike" my mom used to say. They called it back in the 1970's a "Tom Boy." It wasn't uncommon for a girl to not be girlish or a boy to be a bit effeminate, but nobody thought anything about it much. Most people grew up and ended up going the way of their biological gender. A few were gay when they grew up. We are making childhood way too complicated, and the kids suffer for it.

But the numbers show that without change these kids are suffering and would rather end their lives than play pretend or wait till they are older.
