I have been trying to get my head around subnetting for a while. It isn't just the clarity in which you describe the process or the simple clear layout that makes this video stand out. But it is the methodical way you answer the question - to really make the viewer understand where and HOW to see the answers. I really wish this had been the first sub net video I saw! Thank you!

I know this video is 9 years old but it still works today. This is the clearest walk through explaining all the sections and next subnet in the example.I REALLY appreciate your video and this will be saved to my library for anytime I need to refresh my knowledge (since I don't do a lot of IP Addressing I don't work with this day after day). thank you very much.

You've definitely have the talent to make something that appeared difficult...simple. Thats the attribute of genious. Its interesting how other presentations and atttempted solutions are either too difficult to patternized or the presenters become a little dislexic :). This by far was the best! I surely hope a compensation has been equitable for your contrbution to millions.

The range for subnet #2 in his example would allow for hosts from 192.168.1.65 - 192.168.1.78. That should allow for 14 hosts.

You can choose any ip address to be your gateway. Some people like the gateway address to be the last ip address to be used while others like to use the lowest ip address. 192.168.1.1 or some choose 192.168.1.254 depending on the subnet.

by my calculation you have only 13 Usable Host ID , because you toke a total ID amount of 15, so when you subtract 1 for the Net ID and 1 for Broadcast ID , only 13 ID's remine, but you have a very good simple way of explaining how dose subnetting works , I liked it , thank you for your effort

Best subnetting tut and the easiest to learn IMO. I do have a bit of a doubt when you said that you wasted no address space. If you need a total of 78 addresses, how come the ip address went from .0 all the way to .96 ?

Holy all that is good in this universe! I was getting tripped up on subnet #2 @7:31 because the number of hosts INCLUDES the first host. You would think it would be 78-65 = 13 but NOOOO! its 14! For example, how many numbers are there from 5 to 10? Well its not 5 if you include 5. Its 6 numbers... count them up 5(1), 6(2), 7(3), 8(4), 9(5), 10(6).

There is a problem in this video . You have subnets 2 and 3 with the same CIDR and mask. You have not created 2 subnets here ? According to the chart you only made 2 total subnets based on CIDR notation. Subnet of 50 addresses and a subnet of 14+14 addresses? Am I missing something?

I was thrown by this too, and hoping that there will be an answer posted.
@jacobhess3129
@jacobhess3129 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there. There are 3 subnets here. It appears what you are missing is that we are able to create multiple subnets that have the same mask. The mask simply determines the size of the subnet and you can have the same mask on multiple different subnets. The subnet 192.168.1.64/28 is a different subnet than 192.168.1.80/28. These are each two different subnets that support 14 usable IP addresses inside each one. They are not one combined subnet of 14+14.

Hola, I do have a question regarding the last subnet. How did you arrive at 192.168.1. 255? Is it because that possibility for the end host IP, was open as there was no designated subnet range?

Hi there. my apologies on the very delayed response to your question. 192.168.1.255 is simply the last address in the given range. That address will actually be a broadcast address. The IP addresses in the remaining range of 1.96 to 1.255 are available for future subnetting.
