Definitely the right way to go guys,that kiltz is a really good base primer.Suprised at the lack of fire/smoke damage on panels once the vinyl was removed,a lot of work but worth it once the finish coats go on.👍

Several years ago I wanted to paint the wood in my 45 year old garage. It was made with Douglas fir and over time had darkened quite a bit, to the point that light got lost in it. I borrowed a Graco paint sprayer and had 10 gallons of off white. paint. I sprayed the first 5 gallons and in a little while it sucked into the wood and couldn't tell I'd painted. SO I sprayed another 5 gallons. Same thing. So then I got some High solids Kilz and finally got it painted. The difference in lighting was amazing.

The perfect example was when he removed the panel above the back bedroom window and you could see where the black soot seeped beneath. I applaud them for what they're doing, but I would have used a professional service to neutralize the smell so at least it would be warranted in case of future issues.

Don't forget to redo the wires for the electricity. If they were exposed to extreme heat because of the fire, that insulation is no good anymore. It's better to renew now while you're at it because if you leave them in, it might cause problems later on, and if you're unlucky cause shorts and may even cause a new fire. You don't want that.

@1982MCI3 жыл бұрын
Of course it is....... to them, lol. Each day they hi in there and work they are getting used to the smell more and more and in a few days, they won’t smell anything at all!! You become nose blind to the smell and after the paint had off gassed a few weeks and that thing sits in the South Carolina sun for a few weeks, that smoke smell will be right back!! But these young guys seem to know it all so it’ll be ok. I spent 30+ years as a general contractor doing smoke and fire remediation and they Unfortunately are only putting lipstick on a pig here!! When they pulled that ceiling down and exposed the spray foam insulation, that stuff is going to hold that smoke smell like a sponge. Folks have told them what the needed to do here but if seems they know better and cheaper. The fresh o OK ain’t smell will cover the smell for awhile but once the new paint smell is gone, the smoke will return because they have only removed half of it at best. Smoke goes everywhere, even behind the walls. If the self it before the new paint smell is gone, then they will be fine. Otherwise it’s gonna be like living in a bbq smoker, lol

I use to handle fire claims, never leave any wood products behind that was fire damaged. Throw them cabinets out. The underlying boards ( fiberboard ) seal over with polyurethane or something, it will smell !! They make a product to do that with, can’t remember the name, but seal all those, KILLS , is that the name of it. I was claims adjuster, biggest problem was call backs over smell.
@davebrittain92163 жыл бұрын
Yes it will still smell like smoke but not too bad. That is Kills they are using on it by the way. I recently had to do a investment property that we purchased that had a very incontinent old man and his deranged daughter in it before we bought it. The smell was so strong it would make you choke and nausiated. I covered the entire house with Kills twice and it did not kill the smell. I purchased some odor enzyme made by Swish and sprayed every inch of the house including in the basement on the underside of the subfloor and all the floor joists as well as in the duct work and it completely removed the odor. Smelled and looked like a new house once I was done all the renovations.
