The coolest automation I have setup is a "Heading Home" shortcut. Once activated via Siri, the automation will grab the driving time from my current location to my home, then send an iMessage to my wife that I will be home in approximately X amount of time, and finally pull up apple maps to with my home address filled in (useful to circumvent some traffic on the highway).

From what I can see, you can make a shortcut first. 1. Look for "Get Travel Time" in Search for apps and actions 2. Choose your variables From here, you can send a message, and when you tap on the message, you can input the Travel Time. So just draft something like, 'hey I am on my way I will get there at 'Travel Time" be ready' That is just a shortcut, you can automate it for when you leave a location or something. @@courtneypalmer2278

I enjoyed the different presentation in this video. I’ve set up a handful of automations/shortcuts myself, but I still consider myself a beginner. I do feel like there are still lots of things I can automate, but they just haven’t occurred to me. My most proud automation is one I created to turn on the light strip on the back of my TV only if the TV is on and it’s after sunset. It just saves me that annoying extra step of manually turning it on via voice activation or remote. That was the more tricky shortcut I’ve created, so to advanced shortcut people it may be basic, but I was proud of it and it works perfectly!

Another idea: USE 5G when battery rises above 30%. Use 4G when battery falls below 25%.

You can set the Focus Mode not only based on the time, but also based on the location in Settings App. If you enter the add schedule button, you can set it based on the location. 🙂🙂 The Shortcut App for the automation for the location-based focus mode is actually unnecessary…😂😂 Despite, thank you for the other tips!! 👍🏻👍🏻

I use it as follows: I set the Work focus mode to automatically start on weekdays from 07:00 am to 6:00 pm. The trigger for my set of actions is this automatic activation of work focus mode. Then, when work focus mode activates, it starts automation with the following set of actions: 1. Go to the NASA website and set the iPhone Wallpaper with the image of the day; 2. Play for 30 seconds a random song from a Playlist I created (this is my alarm); 3. After 30 seconds, the music stops and Siri says: “Good morning Everton, today is” (date of the day); 4. Siri keeps saying: “today you have (my events in the work calendar)” OBS.: IF there is no event, it skips this step; 5. Siri keeps saying, “Remember (my work reminders)” NOTE: IF there is no event, it skips this step; 6. Send a good morning message to the work group on WhatsApp; 7. Search my work calendar if there is someone having a birthday, and if there is, send a message in the work group on WhatsApp a birthday message including the birthday person's name in the body of the message; NOTE: IF there is no event, it skips this step; 8. In addition to the birthday message, (IF there is a birthday person) search my Playlist for a song, extract the name of the song and artist, and send it along with the birthday message saying: “The song to pack your day today is (Name of music + artist). OBS.: I still haven't managed to make it possible to extract the song link and share it with the message.

@@Magenitech An important note: If you open the Shortcuts app and go to the Gallery section, you can search for: Picture of the Day. There, you will find part of the actions I used to search for the image, you just need to insert the rest of the actions to set the iPhone wallpaper with the extracted image. But it's super simple.

if you still have manually confirm an "automation" every time it runs, as it's the case with location trigers, it's not an automation. That means, if I create a location-based automation to activate a focus (as shown in the video), it will ask for permission every time it runs. The better alternative is to go into Focus settings, and create a location based schedule. Only then it will run "automatically."

If you have a home kit smart plug you need to try the home automation that will automatically turn the plug off when your iPhone or iPad reaches 100%! It’s way better than battery optimization. You can also set the plug to come on at a certain time to make sure your phone is at 100% whenever you want.

Great tips and I’m tempted to use several of these. I have a question regarding the tip for switching off and on Wi-Fi based on location. My car is a BMW which connects to my iPhone over Wi-Fi. So if the Wi-Fi is off when you enter the car, I wonder whether the iPhone will be able to detect that you actually do enter the car e.g. through Bluetooth? I haven’t been able to work this out myself.

Sir, unfortunately for precise location changes like entering the BMW to be something your phone can actively and effectively determine, especially while your leaving from your home for example, WiFi being on helps a lot. Maybe if you the BMW app could send a command to ‘turn on WiFi when iPhone connects via Bluetooth’ you’d be in luck, but I do not believe the BMW app currently does that- though I cannot say that last part with 100% certainty.

I have two that I use al the time. One bedtime(send a message, open an sleep app and set focus to sleep mode) and one that changes the the Text size from large to Accessible Large if I do not have my glasses on so make it easier to read messages etc

From your video I created an automation that runs when CarPlay connects. It checks if a certain SmartPlug is on (the plug my coffee maker is plugged in to) and verbally tells me the coffee pot is on if that plug is on! There are 3 parts: Automation, When and Do. To avoid my iPhone from asking me for confirmations each time an automation has to be executed, check the Automation section & select “Run Immediately”

Shortcuts have been around for quite some time so I’ve tried almost all of your solutions. It’s still pretty basic when it comes to automation, the apple watch shortcuts are very minimal and the apple watch ones often don’t activate on trigger which is pretty disappointing.

Some of these automations will not work as intended. For example, the BT or the location based automations will create a notification that will ask user to confirm whether they want to run. That's a huge limitation Apple created for their own reasons.

Dude I was looking for answers to fix this. Typical Apple L. I wanted to automate Wi-Fi turning on at home and 5G off and when I leave to automate the inverse but having to approve it each time I leave defeats the purpose of automation.

You’d have to turn off “Ask Before Running” before you complete the automated shortcut. He didn’t mention that in this particular video. Try it out🙏🏾

So, the Wi-Fi shortcut is great BUT it's not automatic. The run notification comes up so you can run it to make it work. So, the shortcut is basically useless! Is there any way to make it run automatically so that the prompt to run it doesn't show up? To many comments to check if this was already answered. Thank you!

The issue that no one is talking about regarding Apple and their Automation is that creating automation that turns off your wifi once you leave your house still requires you to run it by clicking the notification on the lock screen (what's the point of automation if we still need to interact with it)! Secondly, when using focus mode, you will not receive the shortcut notification (and the shortcut app doesn't exist in the list of apps you can allowlist)! I would like others to confirm just as a sanity check because I don't receive shortcut notifications when using the focus mode.

My problem with the location-based triggers is that they will not work without asking me. By the time I’ve gotten out of the locus circle for a given location, my phone has already locked itself because it’s gone into Driving focus, and I ought not to be taking my attention from the road to unlock my phone and tap on the “Yes, I really DO want you to execute the action I told you to execute when I left this location!” button.

Use the location setting for focus (Create a new focus “HOME”), and set location. Then you can set a script to run for when focus switches in to home, and focus switches away from home. Make sure you disable “ask before running”

@@matthewsciarrotta2118 If I’m understanding this suggestion correctly, then when my phone would go into Sleep Focus, it would behave the same as if I were to physically leave home, because the phone would exit Home Focus. Am I missing something?

Hi @Kris Cox - Each focus mode can have a discrete automation setting assigned to it for when it turns on and separately for when it turns off. You would have to negate any automations you wanted running in home but not in sleep at the beginning of entering the sleep focus and then revert for coming out of sleep, in to home.

Re: shortcuts. This is a foreign world to me. When last I was in school, they were no such things as computers. Much less automations in Shortcuts. What I would really like to have is a automation that would tell me when I first wake up in the morning by saying, Hey Siri, good morning (or something in that vein )it would give me the weather, my calendar events for the day, read my notifications( which, with a good news app that sent good notifications would make it unnecessary to get a full news update )read any messages I may have received since I last opened the message app the night before, and for those of us who are still working how much time it would get take to get to a certain location i.e. your job. This would be the most helpful automation yet. I have t seen it anywhere. Can you help?

Wrt #6: remember that CarPlay uses both WiFi and Bluetooth for the wireless version, if you turn off WiFi it might not connect or… it’ll reenable WiFi. Of course the wired CarPlay won’t be affected.

Ps: Shortcut: 1.Password Generator, 2.Water Eject (in the case Your iPhone went swimming) pushes the water out of the speaker, 3.Bring me back (opens Apple-Maps and shows You Your easy home either by 🚗 or Bus 🚎 or by foot (if it’s not too far) 4. Automation 6 will not work! You see that there is no field „Ask before run“ because Apple doesnt want to control Wifi automaticly by automations! 😢

Actually yes, you can unmark "Ask Before Running" check on the automatization settings.

You could add a shortcut that does exactly the same and in the personal automation say "Run shortcut", the checkmark will appear as Apple does not restrict the run of a shortcut no matter what's inside of it. That's the real trick here, a lot of the automations shown in the video won't work automatically as he said, only a notification will appear to ask you if you want to do it. 😉 Might be hacky and be restricted in future iOS versions, but for now that works like a charm for certain triggers. But I think arrival is not one of them, sorry.

The most ridiculous thing is that you need to confirm “Automation” shortcuts as they they triggered. For example, instead of turning off my WiFi when I leave home, the Automation asks me to click to confirm that I want to turn off the WiFi! That’s NOT automation.

Here for instance an automation, if I leave the apartment for work, 1. Wifi Off 2. Cellular On 3. Bluetooth on to connect to TWS earbuds.
