Man, 80s anime was a trip. I get the impression it was much easier to get out-there ideas and unusual styles animated during Japan's bubble economy than today.

Most anime pre cgi is god tier. The reason why we rarely see this type of animation anymore is because they take an immense amount of time to create and cost a lot of money. If I remember correctly, Akira took about three years to animate. These kinds of anime are beyond amazing but they require a ton of effort and cost a lot. Japan was also going through one of the greatest economic booms during the 80s which made spending tons of money in production possible. Computer software nowadays can create a full series in a matter of months, if not weeks for a fraction of the cost of traditional animation. The former will always be the more superior however. Nothing beats time and honest effort.

@@MysticWolf1223 Akira took longer than 3 years, they started production in 1983 and it was only released I'm Japan I'm 1988 and in the US in 1989...so it probably took about 4 or 5 years and Katsuhira Otomu, the director, was still busy working on the Manga at the same time as producing the film... Hence why the story unfolds so differently in the movie

The thing about 80s anime is that the ratio of bad to good was just as tedious as it is today. The difference is that the bad stuff did not sell, and because it was before the internet, most of the bad stuff was lost to time. So we have the perception that all 80s anime was as good as Macross, Megazone 23, Space Cobra, Fist of the North Star and California Crisis. However, there were just as many stinkers back then as there are today.

0:48 I didn't realize until now that the couple they push aside are both guys. Must be San Francisco. That said, I love the animation for the band and singer. Even though the intensity of their movements don't _quite_ match the song, it's oddly charming.
