Was riding with my cousin the other day and he talked about how people used to make fun of him for riding around on edge through fields and on the trail, etc… but he’s the best technical rider I know, now.

Great video, Dan. Brings me back to my early days when I’d follow my dad around and copy everything he did. He would look back and make sure I was on the uphill side of the sled and give me hand signals on when to build up momentum before a hill. Just gotta get out there and take it slow at first!

Hi and thanks for watching! It would certainly depend on how far back you were thinking. I started Next Level Riding Clinics back in 2008 and have been teaching a ton of these very same techniques since the beginning. The riding has changed a bunch since then primarily because of the advances in technology. Riders just getting into the sport are pumped to ride what we only dreamed about years ago! I could honestly tell you that we weren’t doing half of the things we are doing these days back on those older machines….but the overall methods are similar. Ride safe 🙌

@@NextLevelRidingClinics Thanks for the response Dan! I was thinking from the 2001-2008 era, before the average sled had a-arm suspension. I have seen a TON of people on older sleds at grays and smiths. and i know from a experience how much harder the pre a-arm suspension era selds are to ride. And how much easier they are to get stuck. Before i got a newer sled, my main rider was a 2001 Yamaha Mountain Max 700 Triple. By the time i got my newer sled i could go anywhere that the at the time, state of the art 2017 year sled could go. Another thing is that a lot of people just getting into the sport tend to get older sleds because of the price. i have seen a lot of people in the back country on older sleds stuck that didn't know how to get unstuck or not get stuck in the first place. 2 words: Kinesthetic Awareness. All edge sports are 4 things. 1 Balance, 2 Pressure application, 3 Rotary motion, and 4 Edge control. Each thing requires kinesthetic awareness.

Any advice for how to handle a hard pack side hill with limited downhill options? Definitely a spot I struggle. I can take it super slow on edge but the rest of the group usually leaves me in the dust at that point 😂

make sure to never lose your edge. better and easier to let the sled fall into the hill than away from it

Ok ok. So I just came from a 17 mountain cat 3" 154 to a 19 rmk turned khaos 850 with the 165 series track. I've already had to almost fully delete what I know from riding a cat. But the opposite foot stepping always got me... What's the stepping for? I commit on the step foot and I sink and it turns into a shit show. I have better luck just dragging that other foot. What am I missing here?

stepping is more for when you are going slow and trying to slow yourself more, or stop. if you're on hard snow it helps more to step. if you are in very deep snow, stepping off the sled can un weight your machine and allow it to keep moving and not get stuck. you can also push with your step foot and help push the machine forward if it's very deep and you are losing momentum and think you may be getting stuck. it can also help to balance yourself on steep terrain. dragging the foot works, but if you don't need to step, then you probably don't need to be wrong foot forward and can just be 2 feet on 1 side and lean more to the side you want to go to. just practice and you'll find it's pretty intuitive when stepping and/or dragging you foot can help. learn how much you can actually lean to one side from the neutral position and get used to that. it's probably one of the best tips you can get.
