Overlanding for the first time (Patagonia, Chile's Carretera Austral) - EP 96

An enormous Hilux, the southernmost road in Chile, a family reuniting, paradise campspots and river crossings! Will we manage to convert new people to overlanding?
Come on-board this week as we drive down the famous Carretera Austral. From Chilean town Puerto Montt to some of the southernmost settlements connected by road to Chile, we have Nicolas’ family with us discovering what the everyday overlanding in south America is made off!

Love the lupines...The yellow lupine is probably an introduced species from much further north, that hitchhiked on muddy vehicle tires during or since the construction of the Carretera. The Scotch broom plague you encountered earlier, was also distributed in the same way, displacing the native vegetation and altering the balance in the landscape of native plants that the guanaco feed on. These 'trade-offs' happen unconsciously and leave muddy footprints on the environment for endless time to come.

It's most common on the California coast but has spread widely, carried on boat ballast. @@NextMeridianExpedition

I love it! Maybe your Mom and brother can give some insight on renting a vehicle in Chile. I have been researching this subject and honestly...maybe looking to buy in Columbia or Brasil rather than rent. Chile is more difficult to buy.

the rental was hard to find and expensive... Chile has been generally quite pricey for the region. buying seems to be better! we met several travellers who bought in Chile and then travelled around with a chilean plate! seems not too complicated! but we don't know the details. we have no idea for brazil or Colombia. did not meet anyone who bought there. There seem to be a dealer in Santiago who buys and sell a lot of overland vehicle. we ve heard several time of this but we do not know the details.
