Dora when younger, fell prey to this, and now goes on adventures, protected and guided by her corrupt Alebrijes, stealing the faces of her fellow living to not only wear to hide her mutilation and salvage an identity, but also to collect as offerings to the foxes in a futile delusion that she can one day get her real face back.

Faces are a huge part of a human’s identity so they need to return them so that they can rest peacefully. Story idea for this Dora. Boots is her spirit animal and instead of helping her he wishes to do harm. Dora helps him and they steal the faces of people. Swiper started following them trying to return the faces. But swiper can not take the faces if his permission is dinied. This is where 'Swiper no swiping' comes in. If Dora says that he can't take the faces and a new Swiper tryes. The Swipers are the spirits of the faces. That's why they have the mask over there eyes.

I can imagine this as a series where through some mysterious circumstances everyday becomes Dio de los Muertos because a crack in the barrier between the overworld and the Dio de los Muertos world and sprits of some sort start emerging and Dora has taken it upon herself to formally vanquish these spirits and close up the barrier that’s letting the spirits out. Boots is her monkey that had been dead before the barrier was broken, coming back as a trusty alebrije to help her fight. Swiper is a minor more know-it-all who constantly tries and fails to stop Dora from saving all of Mexico and possibly the world because of things he can’t remember or explain, by its all because he’s 100% that it was important - his only real purpose is to shed light on the situation despite the fact that he’s rendered blind. The sugar skulls and masks are for disguises; now that the seal has been broken they (Boots, Dora, and Swiper) can form themselves into whoever they want so long as they have their face or a sugar skull of which Boots can help turn Dora into a temporary spirit or the person who’s face they have. After their transformations the sugar skulls disappear but not the faces, faces have 3 uses and each time they’re used they get a little less convincing in hiding Dora and the crew. Those are just my ideas, tell me what you think in the replies. If I said anything that conflicts with what the spirit and atmosphere of Dio de los Muertos is about (aside from the spirits going rogue despite the fact that the holiday is about celebration of family and love for family, I believe)
