I was raised in Guelph (his home town) and grew up learning to recite his poem in school. As an adult, I had the chance to visit Ypres, Belgium where I stayed in an obscure B&B. When I signed my name and Guelph address in the guest book, the B&B host gasped, “You’re from John McCrae’s home town.” Of course, I knew that but I didn’t think someone half a world away would know. Her response, “He’s really important to us.” On that trip, I toured the bunker where he worked in his field hospital. Since then, on the 100th anniversary of the poem being scripted, a gorgeous statue by Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernathy has been erected both in Guelph and a copy in Ottawa. It shows Col. John McCrae, sitting outside his bunker, writing the poem. I often find myself wandering past that amazing statue, thinking about this Canadian hero. This documentary was so beautiful. Thanks for doing it.

Which B&B was that? And when did you stay there? Why obscure?

Thank you greatly for this collection of vignettes to help immortalize the man behind the famous poem. As a former militia member, and descendant of wounded and forbears who made the ultimate sacrifice in both great wars, I fully appreciate these memories of the tragedies faced daily by our heroic John McCrae. .... and bless you Arthur Lee for your generous deeds to safeguard his medals, likewise.

Very good and interesting documentary. Just back from a 1 1/2 day trip (too short) to Ypres Salient. Visited the bunker / medical station, where there is now a memorial to John McCrae (someone I confess I had never heard of prior to my trip), next to one of the many Commonwealth cemeteries. Visiting these holy grounds really drives home to me how important it is to actively not forget what these men did over a century ago. RIP John McCrae and the thousands of other men who died in their prime and are now frozen in time in Flanders fields.

Very pious of you. Except that small wars since the last WW have been ongoing and never-ending popular. Rather, you'd do better praying they don't come to a neighbourhood round the corner from your own ivory tower.

@@pleb7m Shame on you Rogelio, Mundify66 expresses sorrow and hope. Why would you snarkly refer to it as piety? It was clearly a generalized and worthwhile sentiment. Why be so negative about HIS comment, rather than contribute to the general tone of regret, and anger at war altogether.

Aurther curry basically contributed more to the allied success in ww1 than any other single man, his contributions and the details of his & the Canadian cores achievements get not nearly enough recognition in my opinion!
