My grandma and grandpa Hawkins told me about this family and how each winter after this the people in Manotick Station would stop by during the winter, when their dad was working, and bring food for the kids. Times were tough back then.

Loved it! Beautiful in a bittersweet way. I went to university in Ottawa. I remember walking to school and how cold it often was in the Winter. Now I’m imagining that cold before anything was there/anything built up. Wow. Now I live out West in Alberta. Cold out here too. Lol! Life is so interesting, isn’t it?

A good , short documentary. It was sad but realistic for the times. It would be very nice ☺️ f they made it into a full length movie.

They wouldn`t have slept without covering their heads at night. Life is a bitch and it is never so bad that it can`t get worse. Thank you for sharing.

All the passive aggression and "kindness only" culture doesn't produce this kind of fortitude and courage in Canada. Canada as a general population used to be resilient, thick-skinned, dismissive of foolishness (instead of provoked by it), never victimized and basically hardcore. I wish this was still true. What a hard yet rewarding life the settlers had. No time for delicacies like searching for ways to be a victim or hating to end hatred. Political correctness meant working hard and helping those who were going to die if you didn't. Hurt feelings were something you had to grow up to not allow into your decisions or choices. Now talk like this comment is considered intolerant, illegal, and insensitive. Poor Canada.

Interesting you say this... Every time I hear the words “white privilege” being echoed I think of THIS film.

Depends on who and where you are. These days poor people struggle too. Children without fathers, mothers, children without a family.

Even royalty of the time did not have it as good as we do today.
