What on Earth!

This animated short proposes what many earthlings have long feared -- that the automobile has inherited the planet. When life on Earth is portrayed as one long, unending conga-line of cars, a crew of extra-terrestrial visitors understandably assume they are the dominant race. While humans, on the other hand, are merely parasites. An Oscar® nominee, this film serves as an entertaining case study.

@@KikiTrex Yes! I distinctly remember seeing this on The Great Space Coaster and it was in black and white. We didn't have a VCR yet, but I made an audio tape of it for some reason and played it many times because I liked the narrator. Maybe the animator colored it and cleaned it up for submission to the NFB.

"Although Ford had taken great care to blend into Earth society, he had skimped a bit on his preparatory research, and thought that the name 'Ford Prefect' would be nicely inconspicuous. Ford had simply mistaken the dominant life form. The Ford Prefect was, in fact, a British car manufactured in the 1950s. When he first arrived on Earth, Ford was almost run over while attempting to greet a blue Ford Prefect."

Made in 1966, this film cannily does an in-house riff on the great NFB film composer Eldon Rathburn. Note how the composer Don Douglas cleverly starts the film using the music from the 1960 multi-award winner 'Universe' for which Rathburn - possibly the most under-celebrated film composer ever to have worked in the medium - created a signature score.

Oh, you're referring to his book _A Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space,_ where he wrote, after inviting us the readers to imagine that we're alien explorers searching for life and intelligence after a long journey in the blackness of interstellar space and you suddenly notice Earth: _"When you take pictures at a meter resolution or better, you find that the crisscrossing straight lines within the cities and the long straight lines that join them with other cities are filled with streamlined, multicolored beings a few meters in length, politely running one behind the other, in long, slow orderly procession. They are very patient. One stream of beings stops so another stream can continue at right angles. Periodically, the favor is returned. At night, they turn on two bright lights in front so they can see where they're going. Some, a privileged few, go into little houses when their workday is done and retire for the night. Most are homeless and sleep in the streets. At last! You've detected the source of all the technology. the dominant life-forms on the planet. The streets of the cities and the roadways of the countryside are evidently built for their benefit. You might believe that you were really beginning to understand life on Earth. And perhaps you'd be right. If the resolution improved just a little further, you'd discover tiny parasites that occasionally enter and exit the dominant organisms. They play some deeper role, though, because a stationary dominant organism will often start up again just after it's reinfected by a parasite, and stop again just before the parasite is expelled. This is puzzling. But no one said life on Earth would be easy to understand."_ Delicious read.

I saw this once on cartoon network in the 1990s and it always stuck in my head. It's brilliant; now as an adult who has both been a car enthusiast but also a civil engineer and someone with an environmental conscience, I'm pulled in several directions about what transportation needs are, what the environment's needs are, and if possible with whatever's left, maybe some of us can enjoy our vehicles a bit...the tone this struck is brilliant, and so prescient and fresh from the 1960s!

The whole ‘reproductive centre’ sequence… it’s “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” in machine form! Block, cannon, steam engine, locomotive… then that thing with the electric tram… I also like all the bridge parts made of Meccano… * “Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” is the idea that the developing embryo goes though stages resembling the organism’s evolution. This reveals something else about us. We are these apex predators. Other animals are only worth some consideration if they’re pets. Plants are just scenery. When we imagine extraterrestrial life, it’s often some apex humanoid we can just talk to. It took _us_ billions of years to become that notable. We’ve only been spacefaring for a few decades and are already rapidly exhausting our own biosphere. Do you really expect to be on an intersection with basically another human civilization? And then if it didn’t lead to war between the apex predators (if only because of the fear that they might strike first, a universal dynamic when you don’t have cosmic police to shut that down), there is the issue of biological compatibility. This is one thing I like about _The War of the Worlds_ (as conveyed by Jeff Wayne, the way I know it): for all of its own quirks, it acknowledges bacteria. We hardly take our closest relatives here on Earth seriously, but that’s the closest we can get to meaningful interactions with another species. This film-possibly knowingly because it’s a working trope-falls into the same trap of positing that there are _the_ singular Martians and Earthlings. P.S. I do think that spacefaring societies are likely driven by a singular apex predator. Any species capable of it ought to use that capability to ensure utter dominance. Even humans have done this to a good extent among each other, whether or not we would agree that’s such a good idea. This will last until said species proves itself to be too naïve to wield such power, or a truly cataclysmic exogenic event occurs. This still hinges on all of the other assumptions.
