I think Herbert has a lot of talent and has a lot of experience making reads, both half-field and full-field. If he is put in a good situation I think he will have success at the next level. My two biggest concerns with his game are consistency in his mechanics (as you mentioned there are a few things to clean up) and his anticipation. I didn't see a lot of throws where he was making a read before a receiver made his break (his receivers didn't appear to be very polished so it could have something to do with them, I haven't studied them). There were a couple of plays I would've liked to see him anticipate a little more, and (for example) throw an in-cut that was coming open before the receiver sat down in between zones. Great video!

Just my two cents... I haven't really seen any former pro or credible QB coach/guru say that he's going to be a bust... they actually say otherwise... There's a lot of 'film guys' that work for these media companies that consider themselves experts, just because they watch hundreds of hours of game film, with the intention of plotting data on spreadsheets for companies. Some of these guys might have landed jobs after college careers, etc... but most have zero playing/coaching experience. Any average fan can become an "expert" for PFF, as long as you're willing to watch the game film. Unfortunately, being a film junkie, doesn't make you an expert. I'd listen to JT (and other former pro's) and guys like Chris Simms... before touting the 'expertise' of fans.
@jameshoops104 жыл бұрын
Christian Hackney i agree wholeheartedly and tho i do see his flaws as well i think the bust and comparisons of mitch trubisky is a stretch and i agree on the “film guys” watching film is one thing but do they understand the responsibilities and the progressions he is being coached to look at? so that’s another level to me
@christianhackney67644 жыл бұрын
@@jameshoops10 They don't. I had an 'expert' tell me on Twitter that scheme/WR talent (ability to separate form defender) had a minimal effect on completion percentage. I essentially asked him if he thought Justin Herbert dropped on LSU/CLEMSON/ALABAMA would have had the same or better mentality. They said he'd be worse, and pointed to the amount of screens Oregon threw to 'inflate' his numbers. I immediately challenged that thought process and asked why he would disagree that a QB will throw more completions (higher completion percentage) if A) The receiver is far more talented than the DB or B) the OC is scheming receivers open with concepts etc...... Came from the Eason video and know you probably have Herbert above him, but curious where you land on Fromm, Tua, etc.. Also, saw another video elsewhere, saying that he has a lot of mechanical issues. Mainly his non-throwing arm inconsistency and his tendency to "rise" through the throwing motion, and they highlighted a lot of horrible overthrows as the result. Do you share these concerns, or do you see enough good that, similar to the ball flipping, you think those small mechanical issues will quickly get worked out at the next level?

To me this guy seems like Ryan Tannehill with a bit more size, athleticism and upside. Almost every QB needs to go to a good situation but I feel like it's especially true of Herbert. Somewhere he can be brought along slowly and allowed to develop. Chargers make sense to me for him.
@mroverdose144 жыл бұрын
Agree but the chargers are a team I think would hurt his development as he really needs to sit in that offense. QB has to make a lot of throws and defense is avg with a below avg run game. However when he is ready the charger type offense and team would be perfect. He just isn't ready yet.

Generational Prospects: 1) Joe Burrow - LSU 2) Tua Tagovailoa - Alabama Upper Tier Prospect: 3) Jordan Love - Utah State 1st Round Grade: 4) Jake Fromm - Georgia 2nd Round Grade: 5) Jacob Eason - Washington 6) Justin Herbert - Oregon Jordan Love: - You guys know I like Jordan Love quite a bit. Pocket Presence: A Mobility: B Escape: B- Play Extension: B+ Processing Speed: C+ Understanding of Defenses: C (This is how majority of his INTs happen, also understanding of defenses is the most correctable thing at the next level). Arm: A Under Pressure: B+ Toughness: A Release: A- Mechanics: B+ Short/Medium Accuracy: B+ Deep Accuracy: B- He also has something that I haven't seen from any other QB ever except Mahomes. Throwing from weird angles and completely contorted and firing off accurate lasers. Not that I think he will be anything close to Mahomes as a QB. I dont. Jake Fromm: Someone I'm high on more than most. Don't get me wrong, I think Fromm probably is a 20-22ish ranked QB in the league on most NFL Teams. However, like almost QBs, it all depends what system and offense they play in. Jake Fromm was born to play in a timing scheme like the Saints, Patriots, or a WCO like the.....Raiders! I think on these three football teams, Fromm could be a Top 10-12 QB. He will probably not make it past the Saints in the 2nd Round. Fromms arm being weak is blown out of proportion. Dalton, Burrow, and Fromm all have similar arms in my honest opinion. Are you gonna have a vertical offense with Fromm? God no, that'd be suicide. But in the offenses I mentioned, he's an ideal fit. Fromm is almost on par with Burrow with Football IQ, but the edge goes to Burrow on that one. Fromm has the best pocket presence in this class. Literally A+ Pocket Presence. And he's a tremendous leader with tons of charisma. Players will love this guy. He's also very accurate, as long he's not throwing into a tight window. Justin Herbert: I see Herbert as a slightly lesser version of Josh Allen. He's mobile, laser arm, and can look fairly good when he's "on". But there are way way too many red flags for me. Major accuracy issues, questionable mechanics, average pocket presence and will require a Top 5 OL, and is bad under pressure. These last two flaws were masked by Oregon having one of the best Offensive Lines in the history of the NCAA. And a lesser concern, but still a concern, many question Herberts passion and to a lesser extent, his leadership. In interviews, doesn't seem like he overly cares about football, and he is also clearly an introvert and has zero charisma. Not that there's anything wrong with being an introvert, but you do have to lead an offense.

JT - do you think Herbert is more raw physical talent and not as much about choice, timing, footwork, and other skills? Joe Montana did not have a gun, often threw wobbly passes and had great footwork
@JohnnyBravo024 жыл бұрын
Yea Jake Fromm was even worse about flipping the ball. I couldn’t believe UGA let him do that for 3 years. That’ll be a strip sack every game in the NFL. He literally flipped the ball every snap, and constantly flipped it from the snap all the way until he began his throwing motion.

Dude has all the measurables, but time and time again he made crucial mistakes at critical points in the game. Our offense called for so many screens it was honestly nauseating to watch sometimes as a fan. His tape had to be a nightmare for NFL teams to scout. Watching so many screens and then when it’s time to make big reads and fit tight windows he often times came up short. Believe he’s gonna need a very specific systems and a coach that can really scheme players open for him to excel early in the league. Asking for traditional 4 and 7 step progression anticipation throws doesn’t seem like something that’ll jive w/ him early.

Hey JT, on the last drive, when the receiver ran the circus (7) route for the second time, on the other half of the field, the slot receiver was running wide open with his hands up and middle field open. Herbert seemed to get tunnel vision and stare down the 7. In your opinion, is Herbert’s field vision somewhat lacking? That’s the kind of stare Trubisky is famous for.

I didn't think so in one game. But a more holistic eval is wayyyy better. To small a sample size to make many sweeping takes.

If Jake Plummer were on the clock in the NFL draft and needed a QB ... he tells TMZ Sports he'd go with Justin Herbert over Tua Tagovailoa -- and says it's actually an easy choice. "I would steer away from any damaged goods," the former NFL QB says. Tua has battled SEVERAL key injuries in his 3-year Bama career ... most notably suffering a dislocated hip last November -- and Plummer says those are just too many red flags for him. "I would be leery about injuries he's sustained already," Jake says of Tua. "They're not like a broken hand, or a sprained wrist, or something pretty similar. He's working with hips and he's had some problems with his knees, I believe." Plummer says Herbert, meanwhile, doesn't have nearly the same question marks ... and, in fact, he thinks the Oregon QB might be the better overall prospect regardless. Jake tells us he's worked out with Herbert in Los Angeles this year ... and has even spent time with him at the College Football Hall of Fame -- and would have no issues drafting the 22-year-old in the top 10. "He's also a big lump of clay," Plummer says. "And, the right coach, the right system could mold him into what I believe could be almost the future of the QB position."

Great film breakdown and I feel from watching this he is a prospect with physical tools that makes good but not great decisions will need time in an NFL system 2-3 years before he would be truly ready. Have to be more consistent with the accuracy at the next level. (#4 should've been picked on more as he was out of position so much on the defensive side of the ball). He handled pressure better then I expected. Not a top 5 prospect and his raw ability that would have him scraping the bottom of the top 10 in my eyes. Would be a great fit for a team like Indy, Jags, and Washington as he will need to be protected with a run game and defense and shouldn't be relied on to win you games ag the next level for at least 2-3 years.

I was always told as a QB to stay on my toes, can you explain how I’d be more accurate if I kept my cleats in the ground?
@TheQBSchool4 жыл бұрын
Not really. Do you shoot free throws on you toes? Do you hit a baseball on you toes? Do you pitch on your toes? Do you hit a golf ball or tennis ball on your toes? How do you generate force? Feet in ground. Play QB from the ground up. To be consistent, you almost have to have a consistent, powerful base.

A top ranking player in college should skip the draft and go to the XFL or CFL first. If you go to the draft, you will either be picked by some 0-16 team as a starter that will be rotated out the next season because you didn't provide instant results or be a bench sitter for an average team. One could probably be a starter on an average or great team in the XFL or CFL and then use an agent to look around the NFL for a decent team and paycheck. In 2019, 13 players went from CFL to NFL. Most were former NFL players before they went to the CFL. Samuel Eguavoen is that year's example of a player that went to college, the CFL and then to the NFL to play 16 games last year. Bryant Mitchell went from college to the CFL to the NFL where he was put on IR.
@lukasbudach16984 жыл бұрын
orlock20 I think your getting cut due to a lack of performance argument is valid for QBs only though. No other player is expected to turn around a whole team in his rookie season, no matter how high they were picked. Using the CFL/XFL as developmental leagues for promising QBs and players that haven’t developed to their full potential in their position is a great idea though (and probably one that will be implemented with at least the XFL if it can stay successful)
@orlock204 жыл бұрын
@@lukasbudach1698 QBs is the key position thing the XFL needs right now while QBs are usually the first to be drafted in the NFL. This is something that college players should look at before the draft to see if they want to be on a team that they don't want to be on. Tua Tagovailoa should be the test case because he is that type of guy I'm talking about.
@herogibson4 жыл бұрын
how quickly does that false step get corrected? am i wrong thinking thats gonna get him killed in the league? you're absolutely right in calling that "wasted motion." what advantage does that give you? im guessing it's to sell the tendency teams gave to run to the left. could be wrong. if it is, the reward for that move is not nearly enough to warrant breaking a guy's footwork. it won't just affect him! his feet affect the receivers and the blockers as well!

I like the analysis, but we the audience would like a grade for the QBs at the end. What bracket do they fall into, superstar, star, decent potential, needs a lot of work, or bust. Also, what round if you were GM would you draft them in?

@@TheQBSchool definitely me but Im pretty sure you can grow your audience telling them who to be excited about if they're team drafts that person. That's what I'll be doing in my QB Draft Analysis. Take care! *Also, I think I'm giving Justin Herbert a 65 grade. Usually that'd be a death sentence, but with the explosion of the playaction/great running game (McVay/Shanahan/Vrabel) + creative playcalling those QBs can have a winning record now.
