We are all waiting for the Scorigami holy grail: The one point safety! On a 2 point attempt, the ball is fumbled or intercepted and the defense runs the ball *almost* to the other endzone. The defense fumbles and the ball rolls into the endzone. The kicking team falls on the ball and is tackled. That's a 1 point safety. It has never happened. Edit: After rewatching the original Jon Bois video, he uses the play described above. My original example of a blocked extra point was wrong. Thank you Jon Bois.

Technically they couldn’t recover the ball in the end zone or itd be a touchback, they’d have to cause a fumble at the 1, recover the ball at the 1 and then move backward into the end zone to get tackled for the safety. Right?
@delphic46410 сағат бұрын
@@bcgraz1996 You might be right. The key in my original scenario is that the kicking team *picks* up the ball in their own endzone and attempts to run it out. If they fall on it or take a knee, it would be dead since it's the same as recovering a blocked extra point. We are *very* weird rule territory here. I think I have this right, but those more knowledgeable about arcane NFL rules, please help.
@TroyVan665410 сағат бұрын
Nope, that's a touchback and therefore an unsuccesful Try. Team B has to lose the ball downfield and Team A has to pick up the ball in the field of play (i.e. before its own goal line) and then either fumble or carry the ball into the end zone to result in a 1-point safety for Team B.

I figured out as a kid that the formula for the length of a field goal attempt is the yard-line of the (kicking) team’s field position plus 17 or 18. But I always wondered why it was sometimes 17 and sometimes 18, instead of sticking to one number or the other. Now I finally know! Oh, and the extra 10 are because the field goal posts are at the back of the end zone, which has a depth of 10 yards.
@SimuLord14 сағат бұрын
When I was a kid I had a book about the Super Bowl (by George Vecsey, written around the time of Super Bowl XX) that had box scores for each of the first 19 games. Jim Turner of the Jets kicked a 9-yard field goal in Super Bowl III and Mike Clark of the Cowboys duplicated the feat in Super Bowl VI. My third-grade mind couldn't wrap its little head around the idea that before 1974 the goalposts were right on the goal line. Heck, my 47-year-old mind still has trouble fully grasping what's up in those ancient NFL Films clips from football back then.

@@SimuLord Yup, they moved the goal posts for safety reasons. To stop players from running into it and to remove obstructions during passing plays. Makes picturing things like Tom Dempsey's 63 yard field goal crazy. His holder was kneeling on their 37 when the ball was kicked. In the modern day it would be their 47 or 46. The thought of being in the middle of your own half trying to make a field goal makes my brain hurt.

In the CFL, the team that has been scored upon, either by FG or by TD, can choose to kick off to the scoring team. In my lifetime, I have actually seen a team decide to do this, and the reasoning was solid. In the 1989 Grey Cup game, Saskatchewan scored a field goal with 3 seconds left to play to take a 43-40 lead over Hamilton. With only 3 seconds left, Hamilton could have chosen to take the ball on their 35 (another difference between US and Canadian football), or have Saskatchewan kick off. Either option would force Hamilton to score a TD, with a hail Mary, or some kind of multi-lateral play. By choosing to kick off, Hamilton could go for an onside kick, which if successful, would have put them closer to Saskatchewan’s end of the field, making a game tying field goal possible, or decreasing the level of difficulty of the hail Mary play. So long story short, the reason you would choose to kick off, is to be able to try an onside kick. PS. Hamilton’s attempt to recover the onside kick failed, and Saskatchewan won the game.
@blindjustice871834 минут бұрын
Logistics of kicking off after being scored on: Say 13 seconds left. You've been scored on and are up by one score. You know an onside kick is coming. There's a shot they recover, can get in FG range or throw a hail mary whereby a stupid DPI call might give them a free untimed down from the 1. Or.... 100% chance they get the ball too far away to get anything done. Unless you are the Bills. [Edit: Yes, I have done this as a coach.]
@Dave-ms3ri12 сағат бұрын
You’re actually incorrect about the Holy Roller rule. That only applies in the last 2 minutes of the half/game. The reason a fumblerooski is illegal is because deliberately placing the ball on the ground was made illegal about 20 years ago. But, there are variations that are still legal. Look up the Bumerooski.
@Michael-sb8jf10 сағат бұрын
yeah but you wouldn't be able to use the never version after the 2 min warning or 4th down because only the fumbling player can advance the ball
@Dave-ms3ri8 сағат бұрын
@ Plays like the Bumarooski are legitimate plays at any time because they involve trickery that looks like a deliberate fumble but in reality is just an elaborate handoff. Deliberately placing the ball on the ground making the center or a lineman eligible to pick up the ball and run with it as per the Fumblerooski/Annexation of Puerto Rico is not legal at any time or in any circumstance, so the Holy Roller rule is irrelevant to the play.

The goal line is the “plane” the ball has to break for a touchdown, the pylons are the borders of that “plane” and you can’t just do an end around them while in mid-air, those pylons also mark out of bounds (ball gets placed on the 1). You can try to get the ball OVER the pylons and hope the refs say the ball was inbounds while reviewing it to count.

At the 5:30 mark you stated only the player that fumbles the ball can advance it. This is only true in the last 2 minutes of either half or on 4th down (Rule 8, Section 7, Article 6). I feel like this is important to note as the way you stated it, it made it sound like this is true on any down at any time. Additionally if you wanna see an enforcement of the 'missed FG inside the 20 gets moved to the 20' rule it happen in the Bills v Lions game earlier this season. Tyler Bass missed a 24 yard kick, Lions get ball on their 20. They gained 6 yards from that rule.

The pylons on the goal line are right where the plane is, and the out-of-bounds. I would believe you have to hit the inside corner (if I had the ball hit the outside of the pylon, pretty sure it wouldn't count), because it's right on the edge of "the plane" boss (couldn't resist). Being a parent of kids who play sports, sometimes you have to be a judge. The lines are either in, or out. Football and basketball, lines are out. Soccer (and tennis and volleyball), lines are in. Then you have goal lines. Rugby the goal line is in (you have to ground the ball completely inside the goal area), sidelines are out.
@MichaelPizСағат бұрын
My understanding is that the whole pylon counts as "in the end zone." The way the pylon is positioned, none of it is in what would otherwise be the field of play, so touching its inside would technically still be out of bounds (unless you want to get into mathematical definitions of surface intersections, which I think even Blandino would think is going too far 😁). So they just defined the whole thing to be in bounds. I could be wrong on this, though.

ofc it had to be the chiefs lol ik it was 20 years ago but damn

It's gotta hit the post behind the crossbar, just the crossbar
@shawnfogle335715 сағат бұрын
@@edgeknight1786 It was actually the Browns that kicked the field goal. It was initially ruled no good, but it was overturned and the Browns won in OT

I thought it was Ravens/Browns with the Browns doing that?

That kick didn't hit the crossbar, it hit the 'stantion' (i.e., support) that comes up behind and is attached to the crossbar. The referee incorrectly used the word crossbar when explaining why the kick was good.

That last one sounds like anime shit but I mean we had Barkley during a regular season game do a spin and then a backflip over some dude. Its only time before some Gameshark altered madden stuff happens for real at the end zone.

Has a one point safety ever been scored?
@SmartDew17 сағат бұрын
College, yes, NFL, no. But that safety in college wasn't a defensive 1-point safety which would result in a 6-1 score. It was a safety scored by the kicking team, and thus effectively replaced the PAT for a total of 7 points.
