#12, "Broadway Joe" Namath was a football player! He took more nasty licks during his career than any football player I can remember except maybe the Great Earl Campbell. Joe kept the AFL alive. He like another former N.Y. star, Mickey Mantle, was a great teammate from all accounts I have read. Countless games Namath went under center when he should have been on the sidelines, and maybe in a hospital. Namath was a warrior ! I'm a Baby Boomer, grew up a GIANTS fan, but rooted for Joe Willie because as a fan he deserved my respect for his guts and courage. Love you, Joe! Thanks for making the years of my youth more exciting!

When I was a kid, my two heroes were Joe Namath and Terry Bradshaw. Why? Because one led the Dream life of Girls, booze, football, playing for two great coaches. Was a rock star as QB, yet had both swagger and humility. Depending on who he was in front of. That was Joe. But, Terry fought Depression, like myself. Joe had people around him who he could kind of lean on and to. Terry kind of had to do it for himself. He also got 4 rings, the hard way. Both, called their own plays. Both inspired me to want to learn about Quarterback play. Both were team players.

For all the stat heads who bitch about Joe Willie - you have no concept of what he meant to the city of New York and to the NFL - he is one of the founders of the modern NFL, and that’s why he is deservedly in the Hall of Fame. And, not for nothing, if you never saw him play, you gotta shut up. I will simply quote the great Bear Bryant: “He tilts the field “.

The Namath to Bell TD shown at the beginning of the clip was not from the game at Baltimore when Namath threw for 496 yards and 6 TDs. It was from the second meeting of 1972 at Shea; the Namath-to-Bell bomb was the winning TD in the game's final minute.

That's fine. I'll explain: AFL and NFL were separate leagues and never played against each other until Super Bowl. The first two games were GB vs KC and GB vs OAK, and GB smoked each of them. AFL was really a lot like XFL, and nobody took it seriously. What saved the league prior Super Bowl III is that it lured many really good players from college with lots of money and Joe Namath was one of them. NFL got pissed off about it. Sonny Werblin, the owner of the Jets, viewed Namath the "It" player to be the face of AFL, and he was 100% correct. Back then, it was dominantly a running game, and QBs rarely passed. When Namath came into the league, nobody had seen anything like him; he threw a beautiful ball with one of the quickest releases. In other words, he was Dan Marino before there was Dan Marino. That week of the Super Bowl, Namath did guarantee a Super Bowl victory, but today, it remains blown out of proportion because the incident was very small and nobody thought much of it. Anyway, the Jets were going against one of the greatest teams of all time, the Baltimore Colts (record 13-1 and shut out the Cleveland Browns 34-0 in the NFC title game), and they were heavy underdogs. Jets won mostly because of Buddy Ryan's defense (yes, the same Buddy of the 46 defense fame for the '85 Bears). Namath did his part very well by playing conservatively and pulling off the most important plays at the right time; in other words, he played the game like if it was a chess match. The significance of the victory is that it finally gave AFC credibility; Kansas City would cement it in the next Super Bowl, leading to the merger of both leagues into NFL that it is today. In other words, it was just not a Super Bowl Namath helped the Jets to win; it was the Super Bowl of all Super Bowls that changed the face of NFL. People today regularly call Joe Namath overrated simply because they looked at his numbers and were thus satisfied by saying so. That's why statistics are strictly for losers. Like I said, nobody had seen anyone like Namath before; he opened up the passing game. There was zero QB protection, and WRs got mauled all the time; it was a wonder if a QB threw the ball at all. Joe Namath was the first QB ever to throw for over 4,000 yards in a single season (did it in 14 games; Fouts would break the record 12 years later but in 16 games). He was the first QB to win Rookie of the Year and the first QB to win a national title and a Super Bowl. He was the first QB to start in a Monday Night Football game (the game owes a lot of its existence to him as ABC purposefully wanted him to begin with). He once threw for 496 yards and 6 TDs in a single game against Johnny Unitas. Imagine how good Joe Namath would have been if it wasn't for his ruined knees. He tore one of them at Alabama, changing his playing style. Henceforth, he had to be strictly a pure passer. Before, during, and after games, Namath would have his knees regularly drained; no player would have done it for so many years, but he did. In the NFL, he had no protection whatsoever, and Namath was constantly killed which is the number 1 reason why he became an alcoholic. The pain got to be too much for him, but he loved the game so much. Joe Namath was like the Beatles, and the football world had never seen anything like him before. He was truly the first NFL superstar and the first to sign a contract for one million dollars. Before him, football was a game played by meatheads, but when Namath came, men, women, and children took notice, and the league's popularity skyrocketed. The difference between Joe Namath and Johnny Manziel is that the former could handle the pressure and did so very well while the latter quickly flamed out. Today, Namath is in the Hall of Fame for three reasons: he revolutionized the game, won an important championship, and put up mindblowing statistics (he set all of the records himself before QBs with substantially more pass protection easily broke them). Since then, no Jets QB has ever matched him number-wise or championships; Namath remains the only Jets QB to win an AFC title and a Super Bowl title. Most of his Jets records in passing still stand today, even after 40 years.
@stevejorfi90863 жыл бұрын
Yea the most important. Go away kid go eat your breakfast.
@danielholtxxl49363 жыл бұрын
@@MrMathExpert "...Namath remains the only Jets QB to win an AFC title and a Super Bowl title. Most of his Jets records in passing still stand today, even after 40 years." Could that be because the Jets QB's since him suck? Does he have any records that haven't been broken multiple times by QB's from other teams? You don't compare a persons stats for the HOF for one particular team. You compare personal stats against the whole league.

I was there. First of all it wasn't against the Giants it was the Dolphins . It was On October 14,, 1985 during a Monday Night Halftime ceremony, the Jets retired Joe Namath's Number 12, .

Without question without Joe Namath on the Jets,they'd be the worst franchise in NFL history. With Namath they won SB 3 and have gone downhill ever since. That's over 50 years without a Super Bowl appearance.
@balrog3223 жыл бұрын
Maybe if the Jets unretire Namath’s number, they’ll make it back to the Super Bowl.

173 TD's 220 INT's.....Hall of Fame? Hardly
@imasportsphile62478 жыл бұрын
WLU Police, thanks for your comment....some men make it to the Hall of Fame on stats.....and some make it in for making history....and from this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile viewpoint....looks and popularity don't hurt....as I am a good example of that fact.....anyway, you obviously love the NFL....who give reverance to the Hall.....so check out the many varied NFL videos of HOF players at www.imasportsphile.com

Terry Bradshaw has very mediocre stats 51% completions... 212-210 TD-INT and where would he be without the Steel Curtain and Franco....??? No where.... You HAVE to put Namath in the Hall... he put the fledgling AFL on the map... and to make that prediction against the vaunted Colts and back it up....? That took stones of iron....!!! Put Namath on the Steelers in his prime and his has multiple SB wins too....
@wlupolice17628 жыл бұрын
Matt Snell and the Jets defense won that game, not Namath. Weeb had a great game plan....don't let the gunslinger throw the ball all over the place for his usual 3 or 4 interceptions.
@1perfectstrangerr8 жыл бұрын
Namath threw for 206 17-28 Geo Sauer had a great day catching 8-133 yds. and keeping the Colts off balance and thereby allowing Snell to have a good day because they could not stack 8 in the box... Namath riddled that Colt 2ndary. He was as big a part of the win as Snell was...
