In a 1979 game between Dallas and Washington, head coach Jack Pardee, holding onto a 31-20 lead with 14 seconds left, decided to kick a field goal on first down. The move was perceived by many as classless, including Cowboys defensive end Harvey Martin. Why did he do it? This is the story behind the play

Something the narrator is probably not aware of, but margin of victory was more important in the NFL in those days. It was a significant tie-breaker for the playoffs. In fact, Washington missed the playoffs on the last weekend of the season because Chicago beat the Cardinals 42 - 6. Chicago had to win by at least 31 points to get the final playoff spot and they did!! And then Washington missed the playoffs after a heartbreaking 35 - 34 loss to Dallas, after leading 34 - 21 with less than 7 minutes left in the game. 1979 was easily the most heartbreaking season in the history of the Redskins.

In '79 it was the third step in a non-divisional tiebreaker behind head-to-head and conference record. Commom opponents was not one of the metrics that year. The very next season they switched to the steps that would remain intact through 2001, with one modification beginning I believe in '91, stipulating that there could be no more than one team per division in a conference or Wild Card tiebreaker - you had to, if necessary, first freeze out all except the highest ranked teams in each division with the same record who hasn't yet been awarded a playoff berth.

Plus if the tiebreaker rules in 1980 had been in effect in 1979, Washington, not Chicago, would have gotten in with a better record against commom opponents (4-2 to 3-3)

Jack Pardee had a habit of running up the score. When he coached the University of Houston, he did it almost weekly even scoring 95 against SMU in 1989. This is why Wyche ran up the score on Houston. Also, Buddy Ryan ran the score up on Dallas in 1987 because Landry ran up the score on the Eagles in a replacement game.

Washington was playing some decent ball toward the end of 79. After Dallas won the division and knocked out the Skins, John Riggins was so devastated, he decided not to play in 1980. Skins proceeded to go 6-10 and Pardee was fired. This set the stage for Joe Gibbs coming in and going to 4 Super Bowls in the next 11 seasons.

Another factor that played in Jack Pardee getting fired after that disasterous 1980 season was Jack Kent Cooke. In January of 1981, Mr. Cooke replaced Edward Bennett Williams as the majority owner of the Washington franchise. Right after that happened, he called both Head Coach Jack Pardee and GM Bobby Beathard to a meeting so as to assess what would be the best way to get the franchise back to being a Super Bowl contender. Coach Pardee told Mr. Cooke that although the majority of his starters from the 1980 season were growing older, they would be able to return to Super Bowl contender status only if they were encouraged to work a bit harder. Mr. Beathard disagreed with Coach Pardee and let Mr. Cooke know that the only way to make the Washington franchise a Super Bowl contender would be to draft young, talented, athletes and develop them accoringly. Jack Kent Cooke sided with Bobby Beathard, fired Jack Pardee, and, at Bobby Bethard's insistence, encouraged Mr. Cooke to take a chance on a little-known offense coordinator with the San Diego Chargers by the name of Joe Gibbs. The rest is history.

What the Bengals did against Houston in '89 was personal against Glanville. Wyche admitted as much. Another example was the two Cowboys-Eagles game in '87. Dallas won the first game 41-22 @ Texas Stadium, which was during the strike. Buddy Ryan accused Landry and the Cowboys, several of whom were regulars who crossed the picket line, of running it up on the Eagles scabs with reverses and other gadget plays in the 4th quarter with the game well out of reach. Two weeks later, in the first weekend after the strike ended the two teams had their rematch in Philly. Late in the game the Eagles led 30-20 and with just seconds left they gave off like they were going to kneel but had an Eagles receiver run a fly pattern to the end zone. Cunningham threw it toward him and they drew an interference penalty on Dallas, giving them the ball on the 1. Then they scored on a 1-yard TD run by I believe Anthony Toney and won 37-20. - - EDIT Byars got that TD at the end

The Redskins needed the extra points because the Bears were chasing them for a playoff spot. To get to the postseason, the Bears needed to beat St. Louis by at least 34 points and have Washington lose to Dallas. As it turned out, that’s exactly what happened. The Bears beat St. Louis 42-6, while the Redskins lost to Dallas 35-34. Any other scenario, and the Redskins would’ve been in the postseason instead. That’s why going for the field goal mattered.

In 1979 the Cowboys won the Division by beating the Redskins at Texas Stadium in the last game of the year by making a great comeback for the win. Rodger hit Tony Hill for a TD with under a minute to go for the win. The next week Rodger played his last game as a Cowboy in a loss to Rams in the Playoffs. Rodger retired and Danny White went from punter and backup QB to Starting QB

There's a reason unwritten rules are unwritten. Because those unofficial rules don't usually posses any benefit for the betterment of the game of football. Sure it's good to teach proper sportsmanship to athletes of all ages. It's not the player's main assignment to taunt the opposition or trash talk them. Offensive players score and defensive players prevent scores. It may be a bit of a dick move to run up the score, but the name of the game on offense is to score. And if the defense can't handle that, then they need more time in the film room and on position drills.

Also, since you talked about risk/reward recently, this move to kick the field goal carried risk for Washington. If they took a knee in that situation they’d guarantee an 11-point victory. By attempting the field goal they risked a victory margin of anywhere from 4-7 points, depending on if Dallas scored a touchdown after a blocked, missed, or made kick.

I think there are degrees. If you're still running fly patterns, that's fine. Faking a field goal while up 24-3 late...that's a little much. Faking kneeldowns with the game well in-hand, running flea flickers if you're up 31-3 in the 4th quarter, onside-kicking when up 45-0, that stuff is probably a little more deservedly frowned upon (I loved Wyche doing that to Jerry Glanville, though).

It's always, "F--- yOuR tEaM's lOgO LOL" while they grind their feet into it in front of the camera, followed by, "HoW dArE yOu StAnD oN oUr pReCiOuS sTaR?!?!", or "oMg I cAn'T bEliEvE yOu WoUlD dO a FaKe sPiKe!!", after they JUST deliberately ran it up on you the last time you faced them.
