I think this list got most of them right, but have issues specifically with three of the pairings if the purpose is to identify pairings that worked together and produced magic that would not have happened had they not been together. To me Payton/Brees, Fouts/Coryell and Elway/Shanahan would have been better than the three below. Dungy had very little impact specifically in making Peyton Manning a great quarterback. He was great before Dungy arrived and great after. I am a huge Roger Staubach fan and know he led Landry to his 2 Super Bowl wins, but Landry didn't want Staubach as his qb because he wanted a traditional drop-back, stay in the pocket QB. In fact, you could argue the Cowboys would have been better had Landry embraced Staubach's talents, rather than fight them. The animosity between Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll has been well documented. I would argue they survived each other, rather than empowering each other for success. Had Joe Gilliam not had drug issues, Bradshaw would not have been qb of the Super Bowl teams as Noll spent 5 years trying to replace Bradshaw. Eventually with 2 HOF receivers and a HOF back, Bradshaw had success, but I don't know that Noll played a huge role in the offense as he was a defensive coach.

Staubach would be a #1 Pick today regardless of his race. This guy could run like a deer and had the moves of Barry Sanders in the open field. I really Think they could have tried to put 20lbs on Staubach and made him into a half back.

Sean Payton and Brees not being on the list, despite the many valid options selected here, almost feels like a crime. These are two people that didn't just understand football, they understood a city and what they did meant so much more then just any game could be. On the field, Payton has been an aggressive coach, as evidenced by his decision to go for it on 4th down against the Eagles last week up 31 to avoid a comeback. And Brees, known for his accuracy, has always been aggressive downfield. Never more was this more apparent then the decision to go for an onside kick in the superbowl; it epitomizes their relationship as passer and coach to a T. This is a duo that when you put it in perspective, the Saints organization to put it midly had never known more then fleeting success, and these two turned this into a competitive organization year in and out. "Payton has always been known for his offensive prowess, having scored more points (2,804) and gained more yards (40,158) than any other team in a coach's first 100 games in NFL history." Brees was a good QB with San Diego before his injury. With Payton, he's become a true hall of famer and has earned the right to be in that best ever discussion for any football player period. Again, so many of these choices on this list are obvious, no brainers, and yet as I stared into this comment section, the more I realized just how much we take this Payton/Brees combo for granted.

@tempest20000 6 жыл бұрын
The only explanation I see is because of the 6 seasons where they went 7-9 or 8-8 and missed the playoffs. They may have been a good duo, but when you have guys like Favre and Holmgren who made the playoffs every year they were together except their first or Belichick and Brady who make the playoffs every year, they can’t measure up to those other guys when it comes to making the playoffs. Brees and Peyton should be on the list, but I can kind of understand why they aren’t.
@Gungho73
@Gungho73 6 жыл бұрын
@@tempest20000 That's why I tried to include the context of the organizations history. To be blunt, 7-9 is still important when a team that didn't hit 7-9 until their *12th year of existence* (1978, 1979 season was their first to go .500) and even during those years, Payton/Brees offensive brilliance wasn't the problem. And this organization had plenty of dramatically worse years then even the duo's worst offering. They didn't go to the playoffs until 1987, and didn't *win* a playoff game till the year 2000. In their first year together in 2006, Payton was coach of the year and they won as many playoff games as the organization had in its entire history. Even if you were to disqualify this seasons record, it would take over 20 years for the organization to equal the win total of the two. It's hard to understate the futility of this organization prior to their arrival, and they are linked to the hip in a way few coaches/QB's ever have been or ever will be. By the way, this comment is more for people in the future to understand my and others points further on the topic. To your credit, Farve/Holmgren doesn't have as much length, but they are the duo who brought the title back to title town as it were called, going to 2 superbowls. That in its own right merits discussion. I can understand why Brees/Payton arent there, but it still feels wrong as a fan of the game on the initial reaction level at least.

One thing that I believe is so underrated is the colors and uniforms of the QBs and teams on this list. From Marino and the tropical Aqua-Marine, to Joe Montana sporting that Cherry Red and Gold of the 49ers, then the Royal Blue, Silver and White of Roger and the Cowboys, its impossible to imagine any other teams with these players, even though a couple did play for other teams, but the colors and classic uniforms makes any list worth watching.

As a Cowboys fan, I’ve made this comment before. If any team from the other two divisions in the NFC got to the Super Bowl, the Bills would probably have won. Buffalo just came up in an era where one division became the most dominant ever over a six year period. Three different teams went and they won four Super Bowls in a five year period. It could have easily been five in a row but for one no-call on a pass interference in the 1996 NFC championship game. Just bad luck and timing for.Buffalo.

Man. So rather than watching all 33 minutes, I decided to watch a few seconds here and there, and then concentrate on the Brady / Belichick segment. I figured I'd grade the commentary in terms of insight, football knowledge and compelling testimony. Every single comment in the segment gets a 0 out of 10 from me. Not a single minimally-interesting thought. "They're great because they're both great! Is one greater? We don't know, we just know they're both great." "They're hated. I hate them. I, a second person, also hate them. They're hated because people hate them." "Brady is such a great general because that's what a great quarterback is, which makes him great." "They're #1 on this list because obviously they're #1. I'm biased, but I think they're #1. I'm biased the other way, but they're #1, so they must be #1 on this list." Throw in a shot of a cake falling and a model smiling at the camera with a "1" on her arm. Come on, NFL Films, find ONE person that can give 20 seconds of substantive commentary about football. Brady's release time. The number of different offensive looks the Patriots can beat a team with. The art of dominating in the salary cap era. Clock management at the end of the half. ANYTHING interesting. Nope.

From 2013 to 2016 they had three straight losing seasons, and four losing seasons total out of their 11 years together. As for Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin they are not on this list because the debate is did Mike Tomlin influences help the Steelers win a super bowl or did Mike Tomlin inherited a super bowl caliber team after Bill Cower finger prints was all over the Steelers since the same key players including Ben Roethlisberger won a championship with Bill Cowher in 2005.

I mean he is in a way. So was Brett Favre. He would have been nothing without Mike Holmgren. He would have been a county bumpkin who flamed out in Atlanta. But Holmgren took what he saw in Favre and made him something special because he knew that Favre had something special. I feel it’s somewhat the same with Brady. Belichick saw something in Brady that literally no other scout and GM saw. And Belichick made the system easy for Brady to learn. But to say that Brady is great because his system is easy is not fair. Brady is great because he has grown as a passer. Like a fine wine, he’s gotten better as time has passed. I feel the easy system does help, but to say that’s the only reason he’s good is ridiculous.

The thing that bothers me about Brady is that he is not great at anything, just situational football. In 18 years he had 6 seasons with a qb rating of 100 or above, and all of them came after 2007, by which point the Pats had already won 3 sb's. Since 2007 (a 10 year duration in which he has had arguably the greatest statistical run in nfl history second to only peyton manning) he has lost 3 sbs and won 2. Peyton won 2 and lost 2 over 10 years from 2005 till retirement in 2015 . He has never been the greatest completion percentage guy, and he gets a lot of chunk yards due to DPI calls where he just throws it over the heads of downfield receivers and forces the refs to make calls. That's smart, but not actual throwing talent. Clutch? Definitely clutchiest QB of all time, even ahead of my 49ers Joe Montana. But as far as I'm concerned, the first three SB's were 60/40 Belichick/Brady. The last two wins were 40/60 Belichick/Brady (especially the atlanta comeback).

@33:20 Tom and Bill have been in 9 Superbowls as a duo 9. 12 teams have never won and there's only 32 teams. Brady is past the whole Pittsburgh organization !

I think Manning wins SB 44 if Dungy had been the Head Coach instead of Jim Caldwell.

Not only that but I’ve told people that was the team that should have gone 19-0 if it wasn’t New England

I think Tom Brady should have ten championships he had the lead in all three losses late in the fourth quarter Bill belichick's great defenses lost all three games

@@Dennis-nm1jm I could agree on Super Bowl 52 but Brady averaged 15.5 PPG vs the Giants in those Super Bowls after averaging 34 PPG in his 36 other starts those years. The 2007 defense held the Giants to 3 points the 1st 3 Qtrs of the game. If Brady doesn’t get a safety on the opening drive of Super Bowl 46, that last drive could’ve been a Game-Tying/Game-Winning FG drive instead of a desperation Hail Mary that meant nothing. Bill Bellichick’s impact came a lot earlier in Brady’s career (2001-2006) whereas Brady’s impact was felt later (2007-2019). At the end of the day Bellichick’s defenses allowed 17.8 PPG including playoffs from 2001-2019. That was 3rd in the NFL over that span & they led all defenses in takeaways. Bellichick isn’t a good G.M. & is feeling the effects of that now but I still don’t get this need to tear him down as a coach by many.
