From a long time Patriots fan: Brian Dawkins and Ed Reed were awe inspiring to watch. Ed was a certified ball hawk and made QBs lives a living hell in the deep zone, as well as crushing WRs: to me, even a more crucial player than Ray Lewis. Brian Dawkins on the other hand was a freak of nature athlete and played every game like it was his own Superbowl. Never saw him half ass a single game.

He actually grew up in California. His aunt and uncle took him in bc he was starting to get into trouble and his mom was worried he was going to end up like his older siblings. His uncle also helped convince USC Pete to give him a scholarship. He was only considered 3 stars coming out of high school.

@@horm "Pro football is a mirror of early America, reflecting toughness, courage, and self-denial...The game is perpetual motion, a swirl of flying bodies and constant collisions." --John Facenda Football was invented to be a violent game. It is supposed to be that way. The players are given a helmet and pads for a reason. The violence of the game is what excites fans almost more than anything in football. Violence sells. Obviously people are trying to make the game safer. The fact of the matter is, no matter how much they try to make this game safer, it will never be a totally safe game. These rules that the NFL are implementing are totally ruining the flow of the game, and are also completely tainting the integrity of the game. When you have the biggest, fastest, strongest athletes in the world rnning full speed at each other, there will be concussions, and other injuries. There is absolutely no way to avoid it. Changing the game is doing nothing but ruining it. Flag this, flag that for which almost every time is a great play and hit by the defender. Football is getting hit. Real football fans and players alike know that. I understand that former NFL players were kept from knowing the true dangers of the game. For that, I feel sorry for them, and in a sense it was wrong of the NFL to not tell their former players of the possible dangers...but guess what? Now we know. People now know the dangers and the future effects it may have on your brain and body. So instead of trying to change the game, LET THE GAME TAKE CARE OF ITSELF. The brand the NFL puts out onto the field today is nowhere near the quality that it used to be. Real fans and spectators of this game know that. It's real simple. If you don't like football, if football scares you, if you don't want to get injured... Don't play. Quit. Don't play football. It is violent, that's the point. Don't like getting punched in the face? Don't try boxing. Why should the NFL comply to the politically correct people of this world? So some doctor says it's too dangerous to play. Well, guess what, doc, the players choose to play. Do players choose to be lawyers instead? Did they choose to ski? No, they chose to play football, which isn't for softies. Now...the players 110% know the risk they are taking every time they strap up the helmet and play the field. No excuses. Hurting later in life? You chose to play, and you got paid big bucks to play. It's the sacrifice you take at a young 20-some-odd-year-old age. No one is forcing anyone to play the game of football. Don't like it? Don't watch. Don't play. What the NFL puts on the field today is a far worse brand and isn't quality football. I find it harder and harder to watch every season, because it is becoming a jumbled mess and just isn't the same. Why let the politically correct people of this world, who don't even know the first thing about football, tell you what's right and what's wrong? Why let these people basically make the decision to ruin the integrity of the game? Why comply? So I simply ask: Why change it? Just let the game take care of itself. I'm just a diehard NFL fan with an extremely strong opinion towards what the NFL is and where the NFL is going in the future. When I see people commenting and agreeing with the changes the NFL is making about making the game "safer" it makes me sick. Most of the people saying this don't know the first thing about football. I just wish they would go back to what it was. But hey, I'm just some guy who's disappointed and increasingly more and more disgusted with what it's becoming. I just wrote this to share my opinion with the slightest hope that it will someday get back to big hitting, tough, violent football. --Liam Mitchell

To see Dawkins make it in HOF and on this list brings tears to my eyes. My absolute favorite player who played for my favorite pro and college team. Both he and I go through chronic depression and suicidal ideation. It just goes to show how you can have impact on someone you never even met. Hearing him talk to Quentin Mikel just fills your heart up with pride because he sounds like a dad/coach/preacher all in one. You know he believes in it when he tell him to be what he knows he is. I don't think he's the best safety of all time but he's number 1 in my book. Love ya man. B-Dawk forever

Actually I think the defense of the 1976 Steelers were at their finest. Remember that this team started out 1-4 and lost Terry Bradshaw to injury in week five and had to depend on the ground game and a stout defense that shut out their opponents 5 times in the final 9 games to win the division. Had Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier not been injured for the playoffs that year, they could have easily beat the Raiders and won their third Super Bowl in a row. Arguably one of the best teams NOT to win a Super Bowl.

Totally agree Ronnie Lott the best ever safety. That one hit on Icky Woods changed the game, how many defensive players can do that? And if you watch that hit, it will be legal even today like most of his hits.

If injuries didn’t cut him short, Bob Sanders would’ve definitely made this list!

As an Iowa Hawkeye fan, Bob Sanders was incredible to watch. Such a brief but vicious pro career due to his injuries was awfully unfortunate.

In 8 seasons he played a combined number of games, 48, equal to 3 seasons. His numbers and accolades make a case to be in the hall of fame, despite the short career. Not to forget, he should’ve added another hall of fame credential, as Super bowl MVP, over Manning, who had a sub par game, hell playoffs, altogether.

Because I did not know much about Emlen Tunnel, I just read his bio on line. Wow! There should be a book or movie about this guy. Not just as a football player but as a man. I am going to Amazon to see if there is a book about him. Very interested...
