#22 I loved watching Emmitt. You see, some running backs are really good. Others are great, but Emmitt was exceptional. He just found holes and went into warp. The man was epic. His tenacity, both as a running back and a team player, is what defined him. He can definitely run, but he can take down players three times his size in order to make things happen. I remember one game in which it appeared he was stopped. I mean there must've been like a dozen guys around him and than all of the sudden he exploded out of the melee and went over 50 yards for a touch down. That was Emmitt. He just kept going and going and going until every guy on defense, knew for sure he was completely down. Privately, Emmitt is a super nice guy. Very intelligent and a great friend to all. I know there have been allot of good or great running backs, but Emmitt, in my personal opinion, was the most exceptional running back in NFL history. Certainly his stats bare that out. Even in high school, he could run. Then as a NCAA player. Once the Cowboys got ahold of him, the rest was history. The big three...... Aikman Emmitt Irvin They were by no means the whole team, but most people would agree, during the years these three played, the Dallas Cowboys were on top consistently and constantly. #8 #88 #22 Cowboys Forever.......🏈 KB

"Mr. Consistent" is the perfect name for Mr. Smith. Barry Sanders, while being more flashy and having gaudier stats, also had more negative plays than any running back in history. Barry would often get stopped for short or negative yardage then break a Houdiniesque 60 yard run. Emmitt was an excellent receiver and, while not as flashy, would get the first downs and goal line touchdowns when needed - making him more dependable in the final analysis. He and Walter Payton were the most complete backs in the history of the game.
@TheOriginalMyocardia4 жыл бұрын
ABSOLUTELY! While Barry Sanders was one of the best running backs in the history of mankind, he didn't even START to compare to the best two running backs of all time, Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. It is not an accident that those two men are #1 and #2 in lifetime rushing yards. BTW, I also love the fact that both could run directly at any of the 120 best linebackers or safeties on Earth (both at each position on every team in the league, IOW), and as they went past the guy that had only been hired for his ability to make tackles, he had not laid a finger on them. edit: In my book, Barry Sanders would be ranked #3 in the last 40ish years.

Not to mention Barry Sanders disappeared in the playoffs outside of one big game. 64.3 playoff YPC with linemen such as Bill Fralic, Kevin Glover and Lomas Brown, so the o-line excuse doesn't work here. Emmitt? 93.3 playoff YPC. It isn't even close. When the game's on the line, Emmitt's your man.
@TBSandNFL4 жыл бұрын
No, that's simply not true. Barry ran a spread formation because they simply did not have the blocking good enough to run a power I formation, like Emmitt. When you run a spread formation, you run a lot of draws, delayed handoffs and shotgun formation runs and when those fail, you're going to lose some yards, regardless of the running back. Where a power I formation is just going to get back to the line of scrimmage, 90% of the time. Barry's rookie season had 1500 yards and his longest run was only 34 yards. Next year 1300+ and only 42 yards. 1996 he had 1550+ and only 54 yards. 2K season and *ONE* run over 55 yards. Those numbers simply don't add up to what you're saying. Barry went in holes and followed blocking like any running back.

@@dibslin985 .....did you just brag that Barry had BOB FRALIC? He was waaaaay past his prime by 93 and retired the next season. You really don't know anything if you brag about Kevin Glover. Meanwhile, Emmitt had Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Mark Stepnoski, Mark Tuinei and Larry Allen, with his *WORST* linemen being Kevin Gogan and John Gesek, 2 very good, borderline probowl linemen. Emmitt had more help than any player, ever.

Even though he had the greatest O line in history Emmitt is still one of the all time great running backs
@mojoschmee93203 жыл бұрын
People tend to overrate that line. The premier lines he ran behind were 92-94, but even in those short years, there was a lot of turnover, and Larry Allen was a rookie in 94...

I'm a Giants fan and couldn't stand the Cowboys naturally.... however Emmitt Smith is one of my all-time favorite players right behind Walter Payton... primarily because more than anyone else he reminded of Payton with his running Style... not the fastest not the biggest and not the strongest but good luck getting him down when you did get him... the most memorable game I remember of him unfortunately was against my Giants... he gained 168 yards against us most of it coming with a separated shoulder... thank God... who knows how many yards he would have gotten if he was fully healthy.... truly one of the best ever

Now talk'in 'bout Emmitt Smith is like Coming right down my home Street because Emmitt most definitely Was my top Guy as a running-back back in them Day's ! And he Still holds the throne as being the All-time leading rusher in N.F.L. history as of this day and Time ! Many of People('s) had told Emmitt before his Pro football Career that he Was too Small and too Short also for a Running-back, but He faded all of those Odd's and the many of Set-back's along the Way to get to Where he's at right now On that big-time Platform 4-ever Enshrined in the Pro football Hall-of-fame in Canton, Ohio.... (E.S. #22 N.F.L.'s All-time leading rusher With 18,355 rushing Yard's & 164 Career rushing Touchdown's.) 💙'em 🏈 💪 🏆

Remember that great line giving up like 12 sacks to the Eagles the year before Emmitt? Or when they couldn’t run the ball going 0-2 without Emmitt. “They had Larry Allen.” Dallas already won back to back without Larry. Emmitt made that line better. But because of the star Everyone hates Emmitt People say Rice and Brady are the GOATs of their position Cause they have all the stats and all the rings Well so does Emmitt But everyone always changes the narrative when it comes to him. Cause a cowboy can’t be the best. No one will EVER have a season like Emmitt did in 1993 -Missed first two games -Still won 93 rushing title -Performed maybe the greatest and toughest game ever with a separated shoulder to secure home field advantage - 93 MVP - SB Champ -SB MVP Greatness

Shame that people use words like "consistent" or "great at following his blocking" to diminish just how TALENTED this man was as a running back. Yes, he could bruise and get the 3-4 yard runs necessary to win football games and that was a great strength of his that led the Cowboys to 3 Super Bowls. However, watch his highlights and you see a mix of moves that dazzle as well as runs where he breaks many tackles proving he could use many different styles to get the job done and that is what made Emmitt great. He could do anything needed to push the offense forward and keep the chains moving, yet he could also break long runs that would break the back of opposing teams. If I'm starting a squad from scratch could draft anyone in order to put Super Bowl Rings on my finger when it comes time to grab a running back...give me 22 all day!!! People can argue this back is the GOAT or that back and I will never say anyone is a GOAT because there has been just so many great backs that it would be demeaning to say ANYONE is better than guys like Payton, Brown, Dorsett, Sayers, Sanders, Simpson, Peterson, Campbell(yes he and Sayers had careers cut by injuries but they were BEASTS) or any of the great backs throughout history. So, I won't say who is the absolute greatest, because when you watch any of these backs running in their prime they all were absolutely amazing, but for my money, if I look around and we have 80 yards to go and need to chew clock but get down the field and put the game away...I would like to see old 22 out there getting those totes and I would feel very confident that he would get us across the goal line, no matter how many defenders they put in the box to try and stop him!!

Fun little trivia that a lot of people probably know by now. The QB who handed off to Emmitt for his last TD just became the oldest player to start his first playoff game. That man? Josh McCown. Also, at 2:36 that is Jesse Tuggle trying to make the tackle on Smith. If you know Tuggle, you know breaking that tackle was pure talent.

Emmit is very underrated. Tremendous balance, the spin move, he was a north south runner that go to the second level of the defense quickly and he didn’t get chased down a lot. When he got by that level of linebackers it generally it was a wrap.

Emmitt was the complete back you wanted in a system that allowed him to flourish under the right head coach and talent around him. People say Jim Brown was the greatest and yet the Browns only won one NFL championship in 1964 and got blown out against the Packers the next year's NFL championship. Walter Payton had only ONE 100 yard rushing game in the playoffs in his career. Barry Sanders had ONE touchdown in the playoffs and that was that infamous touchdown against the Cowboys and never made it to a Super Bowl. Emmitt on the other hand had 3 Super Bowls, was the first player to win a rushing TITLE AND A SUPER BOWL in the same season (Terrell Davis is the second one). Emmitt is the ONLY running back to win the rushing title, NFL MVP, and Super Bowl MVP in the 1993 season. Nobody else has done that triple crown as a running back. Still holds the record for most career rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and attempts. In today's system, no one is touching Emmitt's rushing yards record. Even after the glory days Emmitt Smith still held the record for 11 straight from 1991 to 2001 1,000 rushing seasons which no one is going to touch. For the post season he has the most consecutive games with a touchdown (9), most rushing yards in the post season, and has tied for most touchdowns with Thurman Thomas with 21. Also Emmitt along with 3 other players have over 21,000 combined yards which no other player than Jerry Rice, Brian Mitchell, and Walter Payton has. Emmitt may not have been the sexy choice like Barry or Walter or even Jim Brown, but he got it done when it mattered. Those Super Bowl rings prove that.

Emmitt had a lot of skills but he had 1 that tops everyone and that skill was toughness. His ability to absorb pain and continue only had 1 peer in his same weight class and that was Jim Brown.
