It's funny how such a famous and dramatic game was actually kind of boring and one-sided. It's fun to rewatch though, and remember the controversy of this game. I think because TD celebrations are so accepted (and even beloved by younger fans) today we forget how controversial they were back then, and how Owens, Moss and others were viewed as dirty players and were widely hated because of their TD celebrations. Now Owens and Moss are in the HOF, and their controversial celebrations are remembered fondly, or at least they are by some people haha.

@davidroberts72825 жыл бұрын
Garrison Hearst was still recovering from a severe ACL tear he suffered nearly 2 years earlier in the 1998 NFC Divisional Playoffs vs. Atlanta, a game SF lost, 20-14. Hearst was injured I think on Niners 1st or 2nd drive and really didn't play very much at full strength until 2001 season. A season that Niners actually made the postseason again for the first time in 3 years, and Hearst won Comeback Player of the Year award, but by then the team's character, chemistry, smouldering on-and-off the field issues between Garcia and Owens and seemingly everyone else on this team had hurt this team's long-term potential success. I say this as a non-49ers neutral observer( I am a Saints fan) but there were clearly signs even in 2001 that Mariucci couldn't hold the team's fragile character together indefinitely. Rice's departure to Oakland after the 2000 season essentially morphed into a power struggle between Garcia and TO with Mooch having to act as referee increasingly to the point where tensions broke and Niners lost both TO and Garcia and spent nearly a decade trying to rebuild.

In his last season 2006, we were a Romo muffed snap away in the playoffs from beating Seattle who were the defending NFC champions. When Jerry stepped in and signed the headcase TO against the wishes of Parcells, anyone with a living brain cell knew Parcells would leave at the end of the year. 2007 was an incredible 13-3 year for the Cowboys and Wade Phillips, but we ran across the mighty Giants in the playoffs who also took out the undefeated Patriots in SB XLII.
