When you win and become a champion, all your opponents will analyze your gameplay. Winning is a great achievement, but maintaining consistency is a whole different challenge. Alex Lanier is another promising young single player though.

If you observe closely, in Japan Open when Alex won the matches against Shi Yu Qi / lee zii jia, the latter two legend players are well known for explosive smashes, but the shuttle speed was extra-ordinarily slow. Alex took advantage by using his intense muscles (not badminton-impulsive force) . In this game against Ng Ka Long the shuttle is "normal" and Alex's Hulk power has no effect at all!!

You can definitely see fatigue in Lanier's legs and mind. Not as quick as last week, understandably, plus more mistakes. Ka Long played really smart. Time will only make Lanier more enduring, allowing him to maintain level week after week, even after winning a tournament. Although I believe had he won that match, he would have had the confidence to keep pushing during this tournament.

Lanier should not have smash so much because clearly Ka Long show the power in 1st set and so was ready for the smashes whenever he lifted Lanier. Ka Long was standing so behind to cope up with the powerful smash and was ready to place them where lanier who find difficulty to reach!! Lanier should have rather played a slow and rally game making Ka Long move more and then beat him in 3rd set easily. Everyone normally beats Ka Long like that !! Lanier might not have prepared well for Ka Long since he is more experienced and tricky player. Lanier needs to play each player with different approaches because they are all different type of players with different skillset and also weakness !! Ka Long is player with every almost everything above average so he really adapts fast to his opponents gameplay. To win against him is to make him move more and more for each point and then change pace in between the rallies and getting him in net as quick as possible to deflect him more. Almost all top players does this against him. Next time Lanier !! Congrats to Ka Long !!! What a win !!

Look at how far back Ng Ka Long stands in 2nd half of 3rd set. While Lanier power smashed all the time (i am surprised by that as his coach told him to play more half paced shots against CTC) with not the strongest follow-up in the world, thaf paid dividence. That and Laniers shaky serves at the end 😂

You can clearly see Lainer still needs to improve "smash&recover". His smash is good yes but if the opponent has a good defense and change the direction, he did not catch those shots for many points. And the accuracy here is much worse than Japan open, consistency is also important. Right now I only see power and speed, if you wanna be GOAT, you need to play with intel also, adapt the game based on an opponent. Long way to go tho.

Welp, i for one, emphasize more on how he won or lost, rather than focusing purely on the results. He played well, certainly shows his class to be on the top tier. Just a shame that he lost on the first round. But it also happens to other greats, and fatigue might play a part here.. Im still curious tho, gonna keep an eye on him for the next 2-3 open series
