Te Pūnana Leo o Hawai'i was established in 1983, one year after the first Kōhanga Reo opened in Aotearoa.
Tā Tamati Reedy studied Linguistics at the University of Hawaii and a relationship of language revitalisation began. It was one of many strategies to save endangered languages and relationship provides the support for both languages to flourish.
