Knowing a lot of these people and knowing that they were the first kura kaupapa Māori kids in Aotearoa and seeing the amounts of success and creative evolution that NT have had, I am not surprised at all to see where they are now. I'd like to ask , these haka are battle dance original from ancient age or they are created for a special occasion? , also can someone translate and subtitle in English? i really wish to know more , thanks

Kia ora, Roberto. Haka was used to tell stories of our history by our ancestors. Over the years our people have composed different haka to tell the story of other historical events or convey important life messages. Some haka were used as a 'battle war-cry'. In present day, haka are also used to honour someone at wedding, university graduation, birthday etc.

@@robertotaiwan1 You're welcome! The shaking of the hands is called "Wiri". The meaning of Wiri differs between tribes. Some use Wiri to represent the sun's rays coming down from the sky. Other tribes use it to represent the subtle movements of waves on the ocean. Generally speaking, in performances like this wiri is used to represent the life force of a person. When a person moves their hands in Wiri they are indicating that they are alive and have energy and life force within them.

My Kaiako put it in words I had never heard before. He described the haka as being a form of dance that celebrates life and death. Rather than just putting it as just a war dance, because it isnt. We have haka for Tangi, haka for weddings. It's a celebration :)

It was used before a war, the Māori war army who do a haka to the other war army their fighting, may have been Persians, Indians or even other Māori, it was to scare the enemy and show how strong our people are and boost adrenaline, and to make you more angry and heat up your body, never use 100% ihi (haka anger ness) when doing a haka because your nose will bleed, your head will get really hot with a sore headache then you will faint, no lies that happens to a lot of people when performing haka, if you push to hard, you faint, but yea it was to scare the enemy’s away, if they weren’t scared then war is coming after that haka ends

But also to celebrate, tell history and for funerals, and stop something from happening For example “ka mate ko te mauri o Te moana, kamate nga awa o Te motu e!” Means “If the lake dies (gets polluted) ALL the rivers and streams coming off it die as well”
