I think an educational video on the process of and how to tell nature toning from artificial toning (e.g. color pregression, pull away, etc) and how some Morgans end up "Monster Toned" while others end up black would be a great video for the channel! Love the channel!

Interesting group of coins. Glad you got straight grades. If I had seen the last two raw, I would have thought artificial toning too. Thanks 👍 ⭐

Great video Ben! As a semi novice to collecting I have noticed something between real toning and artificial toning. It's not always so much about the color but rather the patterns. Most of the real toning i see starts at the edges and works towards the center and is usually darker at the edges with more colors towards the center. Sometimes they also have a mottled look to them often with bare spots from handling or possibly something else that was on the coin to prevent toning in those spots. Most of the artificial toning i have seen have haphazard patterns, the colors are often a bit more vibrant and usually don't have a mottle look or tiny bare spots from handling. They also usually don;t have those real dark blues that almost look black until you tip the coin around. In my opinion everything you have showed in this video is legit toning.

I wasn’t surprised. Those toners actually look natural to me 100%. A lot of times you can tell by the colors and the progressions.

I agree with you, a subtle toning is very nice (especially a subtle blue or sea green). I know a lot of folks like the rainbow look, but I'm not really one of them. That said I own an old soapbox ANACS 1878 CC with rainbow toning, though it's not nearly as pronounced as many that I have seen for sale in recent years. I'm actually kinda shocked that you didn't get questionable color on the 1889. It's nice to have a little good luck for once. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Ben!

It is frustrating. As Ben said, he thought it was artificial. I received two 1880s Morgans back from NGC last year that are in the MS66 range and they were graded AT. I completely disagree.

Ben: As usual, a great video. I would have said the 1889 was Artificial toning and I think if you had sent it to PCGS it would have come back that way. I bought one at auction that was clearly marked, UNC Details--Artificial Toning, because it looked so spectacular, and it had very similar colors to the 1889--just more pronounced. Thanks, professor, for the continuing education. I really like your videos! Cheers.

Hi, Ben. *Happy* *Thanksgiving* to you and yours. I am very thankful for your straight talk videos. I have learned a lot from you. I have gotten an eye-opening look at the grading companies from your videos. I also like your history content. And I enjoy your humor. Thanks for everything you do on this channel. In the spirit of the day: I love cranberry toning. May you never get a turkey from the grading companies. *TYU*

Hi Ben , I read the planchet's that were used for the Peace Dollars were treated to keep them from discoloring . I see the 1889 as natural toning for sure . Very rare to have it on both sides . If this was an MS 64-65 - $800 would not have been a problem . I have been collecting toners for over 25 years and EOR's are my favorite but your right prices are crazy and there is NO price guide . Happy Thanksgiving and keep up the great work...

Wow that 1888 Philly could have pulled a Star grade. That's the most awesome toning on a Morgan I've ever seen in a holder. I was a bit surprised it got a grade but 62 seems a bit low. I froze frames and studied it carefully and even with the hits on the cheek it looks 63 to me.

@@TheCoinGeek So true, maybe you could keep it in the shop, some candy for a display, don't put it up for sale but just entertain the occasional offer on it? It's like a "what would you give me for it?" coin. a WWYGMFI? That might not be a good idea, I'm just thinking out loud. I'm not sure what the customers would think of that but still, my gut tells me that coin will one day fetch a huge price. Like if it sold for $1,250 I'd say -- yeah but just look at it! It's so subjective a coin I think the true value is arbitrary -- and easily underestimated.

I just bought a couple of raw 188x-O Morgans with heavy blue-ish toning on eBay this week, (where's the fun in buying them pre-slabbed?) and I'm anxiously awaiting their delivery. I'm not a fan of these dark coins, but apparently they're quite popular so hopefully they'll grade and sell!!

I love toned coins, if NGC says these are natural tones, well, great result! Maybe the old lady kept those coins in a kitchen . What is interesting is that the coins are toned on both sides.

I sent a toned Morgan (similar to the last coin in this video) that was a 66 in an ANACS soapbox to NGC, they called it AT. Cracked it and sent it to PCGS, they called it a 66. Just shows you how silly TPG is.
@joshpointoh
@joshpointoh 8 ай бұрын
I think they are mostly consistent with grades, 66 is a 66 usually, but with color or cleaning, is like they don't want to get "tricked" so they use a lot of circumstantial evidence to assume.

Happy Thanksgiving, Ben. As you know, I prefer the blast white coins. If I had guessed before your grade reveals, I would have guessed those last couple dark/rainbow colored coins would have come back QC or AT.

I have 3 Morgans I bought on eBay that are practically identical to those 3 in appearance. I'm almost afraid to send them to PCGS. Since I'm not a member of NGC (and I'm running outta money!), I'm tempted to submit to ANACS first and then cross them over. Kinda sneak in the back door, so to speak. What do you think?

Hey Ben. Sure enjoy your videos. So where do I need to go to acquire a doctorate in coin grading? And I am specifically talking about knowing exactly what it is the graders at PCGS and NGC are looking for. It seems to me that would be far more profitable than any PHD in other fields such as medicine, engineering, physics, etc. Thanks.

That Peace dollar at the beginning was really ugly. "Overall very pleasing coin." - No, Sir. I like how you jammed NGC by making them put the high grade reverse of the 1884-O front facing under that MS3 label. Nicely played. So, what's deal on the "artificial toning" ? We you revise your thinking on the topic?
