Tommy Thompson, Bob Evans, and the crew of the R/V Arctic Discoverer did awesome work. To bad Tommy Thompson has been in jail for years, I consider him a genius.

They ought to edit this video and highlight Tommy...he was the not only the chief scientist, he was a world class entrepreneur. Gary Kinder wonderfully captures the story in Ship of Gold in Deep Blue Sea. High marks for Tommy and Gary!

What a shocker. Not only did I think both expeditions were fully conserved, graded and sold years ago (actually decades) but for some reason this Mother Lode of quality was kept for the grand finale. On the one hand the release of these coins is guaranteed to generate a great deal of enthusiasm; on the other, those who spent huge sums for "top pop" might be more than a little miffed. I can't help but recall the Pawn Stars episode when Jeff Garrett offered an SSCA specimen; the response was essentially 'No thanks, we don't buy shipwreck coins. There's always the risk of finding more'. And there you have it.

Yep Rick was right to pass on that coin. I wonder if there will be another expedtion back to SS Central America. Records stated 11.2 tons of gold onboard. 1988 discovery was like 2000 lbs and 2014 was far less than that. They may have found most of the gold coins but there's gotta be hundreds of large gold bars still down there.

00:45 *RIP to those poor 525 souls* (they seem to be forgotten about whenever anyone talks about this tragedy, so I wanted to remind us to not forget the enormous human loss here - that’s a _LOT_ of folks to lose their lives at once 😢) But just in case, anyone else was curious, I just did the research for how much that $1.6 million dollars in 1857 would be worth today in 2022, at face value (as a side note, this was written on the page with the inflation calculator _“The U.S. dollar has lost 97% its value since 1857 Updated: July 13, 2022”)._ 97%!!! That’s just sickening. Anyways, *in today’s 2022 money, that $1.6 million = ~$54.5 million.* *The full breakdown:* $1,600,000 in 1857 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $54,493,977.01 today, an increase of $52,893,977.01 over 165 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 2.16% per year between 1857 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 3,305.87%. This means that today's prices are 34.06 times higher than average prices since 1857, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index. A dollar today only buys 2.936% of what it could buy back then. The inflation rate in 1857 was 2.35%. The current inflation rate compared to last year is now 9.06%. If this number holds, $1,600,000 today will be equivalent in buying power to $1,744,956.13 next year. The current inflation rate page gives more detail on the latest inflation rates.

Really 425 died, mainly men who stayed behind to try and keep the ship afloat. It was (and still is) that news reports may be uncertain at around the time of the event. Example: I found an article from a newspaper from California that came out like a week after Pearl Harbor and it had reported the death toll to be substantially higher.

So when someone says bitcoin is the new gold you can laugh even harder at them.
@skipondowntheroad5833
@skipondowntheroad5833 7 ай бұрын
I love gold for various reasons, but I don't laugh at people for saying that Bitcoin is the new gold. Bitcoin has all the necessary hard money properties of gold. But Bitcoin is superior to gold in its scarcity, portability and divisibility. On or near April 20 2024 the stock to flow ratio of Bitcoin will be 124 which is double that of gold at 60. Also any amount of Bitcoin can be transported across the world in seconds. Try that with gold. On second thought, maybe you shouldn't try that with gold as it might go down with the ship in the ocean.

Most gold coins of the world (including those in the video )that were issued by governments for circulation were made of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper. They used copper in the coin because copper is harder than gold and it prevents the coin from wearing out too fast.
