Just finished 'The Mountains Sing'. I grew up a student of history, and followed the Viet Nam war closely from newspaper/magazine & television reports. I marched once against the war 01, APR '71 in Wash. DC with the National Liberation Front when I was seventeen. John Kerry was there with many veterans. I went on to Operation Deep Freeze in the US Navy in 1974 getting to meet Admiral James B. Stockdale (former senior P.O.W. Hanoi Hilton) He was a fan of Jane Fonda he'd go on, as we flew through the Ozone Hole above Antarctica:>) I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and feel much more respect for the Vietnamese people than ever before. The war was completely avoidable if only HCM was given the floor for awhile in Versailles post WWI, or if Harry Truman would have replied to HCM's letters. Nguyen Phan Que Mai's message pertains to today in our new forever war Afghanistan, besides many others.
