NHL 20 Review - The Final Verdict

NHL 20 brings enough new to the table that it feels like a worthwhile upgrade over last year’s entry, bringing the incredibly fun new Eliminator mode and revamped commentary that breathes some new life into the experience. Sadly, the AI remains occasionally nightmarish, and the game’s consistently-growing collection of modes means EA is leaving some older modes out to die, resulting in a lot of fluff to sort through to get to the good stuff.

Epidemic - illen spree 2k stopped cause EAs NHL series was absolutely killing them. Talking about football, the NFL got angry at 2k for selling their brand at bargain bin prices so they went to EA and asked if they wanted the exclusive licence. The rest is history. Back in 05 you could debate which football game was better. Madden now is in somewhat of a sorry state.

But not nearly as bad as the Madden games. NHL 20 seems like they put all their effort into their “over 300 hours of commentary” some minor adjustments to the mechanics, and then leave everything else the same. Best NHL game since NHL12. The bots are still not great, but offline you can adjust things accordingly. Online, not so much. Playing EASHL with a bot defender is awful. Played a game yesterday, where the bot defender had two wide open players to pass it to, and instead, he just passed it to the middle, right to the other team, who then had an easy goal. And I totally agree about the menus. They made it worse this year. Sub-menu and sub-menu. It's a little ridiculous. Ones still sucks, but not because of the game, but the players. Can only do so much about that. Franchise mode is AMAZING this year. I play that game mode the most, so the new features and improvements to existing ones is so great. The new animation really are great, and make the game feel so much more fluid.

So i reinstalled the game this weekend, and (un)fortunately my psn access is over, and i think, i won't renew it for now, because i should stop procastinating anyhow. Well, during installation i played the stanley coup final, and i'm pretty sure, i would win 100% on pro, and lose close to 100% on allstar. Ok, i know, i could be a better player, but how is this engaging in single player? Even a free chess app for your smartphone has more difficulty settings. So does anyone really want to play an entire season like this? On top, you can almost predict AI goals, when their sticklift is faster and they start tic-toc passing all over your zone. So as a pure multiplayer game, it's just not worth full price. It's a roster update with some tweaks here and there.

EA and 2K have a lock on the sports genre. They don't have an incentive to shake things up because they know most people will buy their sports games each year. MLB The Show is the rare sports series that actually is of high quality each year. The developers really take pride in putting out a substantial game. EA can do better but they don't have a fire lit under their asses. They have made incremental upgrades to NHL because they know hockey fans have no choice but to buy it if they really want a hockey game. At some point, I see EA and maybe 2K going live service with the sports games. Just update the roster each year and be done with it. We're pretty much at that point already.

The same glaring issues constantly plague this franchise and I just can't stand it. The goalies don't square up to the shooter. They lean on making glove saves rather than just being infront of the puck. Player styles are so irrelevant it's unbelievable. You really just have to be fast and that's it. In this game specifically it's useless to be anything else. I also understand they have to mitigate bigger players somehow bc otherwise you have unstoppable nhl13 enforcers but it should be that every player just eats checks unless its lined up perfectly. The game does have those drawbacks to trying to hit too much but it doesn't go both ways. If you try and hit too much you're gonna get beat constantly but sometimes you make a good check and a player like Matthew Perrault will just bounce off and keep moving the puck forward. And yet, if you're using an actual powerful skater like a jack eichel, hell get tapped and completely lose possession. There's no consistency. The worst of all though is the horrid hockey Iq of the AI. They claim improvements every year but they clearly haven't gotten anywhere. The huge issue in this game is defenseman in their own zone. I've tried all different types of defensive set ups and all too much they're still flat footed puck watching. Unless I go out of my way to control one I haven't found a way to fix that. If I do that though I get no pressure on the puck bc the AI are terrible at that too. This game is just a lose lose. Until the developers aren't just hockey fans and at least go to seek real hockey knowledge the game is gonna continue to be a crap shoot.

NHL needs to be on SWITCH, EA would be surprised at the audience that would be there for it. Had a chance to play this, still have a huge problem with the way the A.I passes & receives passes and the amount of penalties on defense, like tripping on poke checks, or once in Exhibition/ Play Now my best player who was A.I controlled got a game misconduct match penalty for boarding a defenseless player face first, the animations need to be redone next gen... I played on All-Star and I thought it was borderline cheap how the AI is always on a 2 on 1 situation no matter what I do, they reacted faster than my guys without the same outcomes as my guys.

Are AI teammates still brain dead? My brothers and I do player lock and our teammates are soo incompetent! They are no where near as talented as the other team's players!

As someone thats bought the game every year since 1995, im happy to say i have no intention on buying this years edition. NHL 20 seems like the same product thats been placed on shelves for the last 4 years. Wake up EA.

Online is a lag party my club had 3 games in a row all teams who had good records we be playing with high ping . Also if you check the rankings most of these team's only have 1 or up to 6 lost this made no sense lol

This is the worst version by far. Basically any button you press on defense is a penalty so you end up just using L2 and R2, which is back skate and pass. Who asked for more crowd animations and a battle Royale mode? Wtf

Get rid of the scoreboard in the bottom!!! And get rid of L2 back skate spam!!!
