Considering where these teams are suppose to be(expectations), and last game's results, I was of the opinion that the Canucks would be laughing with anything but a blowout loss... If they looked even remotely competitive(even had they lost), the Canucks would already be doing far better than 90% of the media expected. So then they pull out a gritty win, responding every time the Oilers got close to tying things up... Ugly win, but if the Canucks can maintain this type of structured defensive play when things get hairy(on top of getting past the flu in the room, and getting a few more pieces back to shore up their depth), they could make themselves a scary team to face up against this year...

I'm wary of tempting providence, but I'm inclined to agree with your analysis. Despite my historical reticence about projecting future potential ceilings for this team(cuz we've all seen how quickly things can go sideways real ugly for this franchise), Tocchet seems to be effective at making these guys look like a well oiled Navy Seal deployment from a Christopher Nolan film. I expected the Canucks to make it competitive in Edmonton tonight, but if someone told me that Demko would be on the bench and Edmonton would have 7 PPs and that the Canucks would win 4-3 in regulation, I would counsel that person to perhaps not smoke quite so much cannabis before engaging at prognostications. But damned if that didn't actually happen though! Small sample size? Sure. But there's something about this group that reminds me of earlier Boston or Tampa Bay rosters. They're collectively tenacious and committed to the greater good. No egos, no whining, no passengers. This is the most cohesive team I've seen here in...idk how many years..or decades! Luvin it!

One thing I expected was that with the Oilers and Canucks involved in this game, goals would be plentiful and both teams did not disappoint. Both the Oilers and the Canucks have some big guns who know how to get that puck in the net. What has been surprising me so far is I've not been noticing Tyler Myers due to bad play. Seems like Tocket's structured defense is helping the big man play a better game - that hand not having the dead weight of an over the hill OEL on on the ice with him.
@donmackie6086

@@puny-tinsucks5102 that's a valid concern. But when it comes to variables like size, speed, elite talent and the like, those attributes are inferior to a high functioning collective hive mind that thinks as a single entity. I've seen this profile with previous lineups in Boston and Tampa Bay. For now, because things obviously can change, the Canucks look very focused and very committed to the collective best outcome as opposed to singular ego driven star narrative. Reminiscent of the insane strategies of 1970s era Dutch national football and their so called 'total football'. There's clips here on KZbin if you're not familiar. Peace.

Actually I thought the play by play guy was much better than last year. I guess he's the Oilers regular guy? Cause last year he couldn't hide the disappointment when the canucks scored. These past two games he's put a little more positive emotion into the canuck goals as well. Still, Shorthouse is much better. We've really been lucky in Vancouver to have had some of the best most neutral play by play guys in the league. Both of the Jims and Shorty are legends.

The defensive effort from the Canucks was nuts to watch! All of these people are putting it as a major failing of the Oilers... and there are definitely some things to work on, sure, but more than any failing of the Oilers, is moreso the outstanding performance of the Canucks. With a slight twist of fate, this could have been an 8-4 game for the Oilers instead. So many close calls. Goalie was really on fire, and defense was super solid.

ive said it a million times, you need talent + grit meaning you have to go to the dirty areas like the front of the net and be prepared to take a pounding.. Thats why when i saw laffertys goal i jumped from my seat....lafferty is AWESOME. This team has talent and legit snipers make no mistake about that, kuzmienko scored 39 goals, we already know about miller and boeser ,High end talent hughes petterson . THe word i would describe to use this team is BALANCED in every facet. Oh and tocchet is FAR AND AWAY a better coach than AHL woodcroft . The oilers are a 2 man show and you cant win with that they are the exact opposite of a balanced team.Their goaltending is atrocious ..as for their D with nurse ...come on now

Oilers MANAGEMENT has been in the "we can win the Cup without a goalie or defense" mode for 10 years and look how well that works. My guess is McDavid will be gone when his contract is up because he wants a Cup and the money won't matter. He won't win a Cup with the Oilers. They have spent so much money on just 3 players. Management is so dumb that in the last year of his McDavids contract they won't move him to get as much as possible in return. They will just hope they can convince him to stay with the $$$$.
@saschaganser9671

@@trvman1 Draisaitl is very loyal. But if the season goes wrong, he might think to move for his last big contract. Draisaitl might become a tradable as early as this deadline, if it becomes clear he doesn`t want to extend. MCD might be right behind him in the door out. There`s a chance the whole thing blows up, especially as key players are aging. Kane is 32 now, Hyman 31, RNH 30. Eholm 33 and we might have seen his best.
@trvman1

I bet he and Connor have a talk and if Leon moves, Connor will want to go to the same team when his contract ends. Both sign for less money to go to a team that can win the Cup. Oilers management could make it work with Leon signs with another team and Connor takes a trade.
