Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings - ''Brawl in Hockeytown'' - March 26, 1997 - can't recommend watching this enough.

There needs to be a thorough documentary about that whole rivalry because there's a LOT of backstory leading up to that brawl and the numerous fights since during the late 90's/early 00's.

THIS!!!! As a Detroit Red Wings fan and native Detroiter, I was never prouder. Both benches cleared; the goalies also went at it. I remember my entire family jumping up and down and cheering at the living room TV. Even the coaches got into it a bit. Colorado deserved the ass-whooping they got. I remember people in Detroit celebrating because the city for decades has been mocked nationally due to the financial devastation caused by the decline of the auto industry. After the game that night, my sister found a random drunk who had climbed into the back seat of her truck and promptly fell asleep. When we woke him up he said, "Red Wings, Red Wings!" You definitely need to react to this, but you might want to view a background video to understand the rivalry between the two teams before you do.

The hockey code in fights man is totally real. Fighting is all in good fun at the end of the day, but no body wants someone to get seriously hurt. Some guys will get knocked out and crack their head on the ice. The hockey code means that you have the honour and respect not to allow the man you were just fighting to take a hard fall. You watch again and notice, the guy who wins the fight will usually be holding on, trying to keep his opponent up, you can see it.

There's a level of respect for hockey players that's I guess an "unspoken word" so us hockey fans respect that too and love our fellow man, but hate them on the ice.

Goalie's are overwhelmingly protected in hockey. Canada is really the bedrock of hockey development. Certain US states have also played a big role. Mass, New York, Michigan, Minnesota have historically been the best US states in terms of hockey development and still are somewhat, but some southern states have progressed over the last couple of decades. I grew up playing competitive hockey in Upstate New York. I played at a very high level...but being a pro is just such a tiny percentage of people who make it to that level. I would equate myself to a teenager who was in an EPL youth development system, but then around like the age of 17, they're just like "you don't have what it takes to be a pro." People underestimate just how good you have to be to play professionally in all sports.

hardcore Vancouver Canucks fan here..... since 1970 we've been in the NHL.....but just so it's clear..... passing you a note under the table..... the NHL has teams from all over Canada..... from Vancouver to Montreal..... and that other country to the south of us has some teams in the NHL now too..... it's not like two different leagues in each country like in football..... NFL and CFL..... Vancouver did win the Stanley Cup in 1918 as the Vancouver Millionaires..... that's why we sometimes have the "flying V" on our jerseys.

Hey guys, love watching your videos. If I could recommend a video I would recommend you guys watch “the brawl in Hockeytown” between the Detroit redwings and Colorado avalanche. people think of hockey as a Canadian sport. And obviously, it's massively popular in Canada. But it should be noted that Canadian teams have always been a minority in the NHL. Only 2 of the original 6 teams were Canadian, and there are only 8 Canadian teams out of 32 total in the modern NHL.

One of the reasons why the refs kinda hang back and let a fight happen is because it's sports, tensions are going to run high between teams regardless until someone reaches their tipping point. Best to give them a minute to settle it then and there instead of letting it stew the entire game and have a much more serious fight break out after the game that could result in career-ending injuries or worse.
