As a boardgame connoisseur I'm deeply troubled by their preferences but now I also understand why life in the bubble was such a hard time for them...

What’s wrong with their preferences?
@brickuz
@brickuz 3 жыл бұрын
@@blarbkanopcious4243 We've simply learned so much about game design since e.g. Monopoly and Candyland but strong marketing still keeps them around. Today there are thousands upon thousands of boardgames with more sound mechanics, clearer themes and all this without being more complex (Monopoly is for instance more complex and plays longer than e.g. Settlers of Catan that was mentioned... which was a positive exception). I don't blame the players though I just find it unfortunate that games like Monopoly still are what we put in the hands of kids just because it was "the known thing" a few generations ago.
@blarbkanopcious4243
@blarbkanopcious4243 3 жыл бұрын
@@brickuz I guess my question was about why the newer games are seen as better-designed than the older ones. I'm glad you mentioned both Monopoly and Catan since I actually love both of those games, so if you think the comparison will work, let's compare those two! What do you find lacking about the design of Monopoly?
@brickuz
@brickuz 3 жыл бұрын
@@blarbkanopcious4243 There are many problems but the main three are: - Roll and move: Input randomness (e.g. these are the random cards you were dealt, now you build a strategy you control with those) is generally considered good for variability but you want to avoid output randomness (you cannot influence the outcome of an action) since that removes agency for the player/removes meaningful options. Roll and move creates output randomness (you cannot influence where you'll land and that outcome is core for the game). Compare this to a dice game like Yatzy where you can influence the dice by rerolling some and decide what scores you'll take... so it's not a problem with dice itself. This is why you find basically no pure roll and move games among modern designs except for some games very specifically targeted towards children. Modern options include drafting dice or cards for movement, picking where you want to go but pay more for more attractive options (e.g. bidding) or having abilities to modify the result (e.g. "I play this card that allows me to modify the result by +2"). - Dominant strategy: A dominant strategy is a strategy that will beat all other strategies and can only be beaten by "more luck". Usually this is avoided by implementing "rock, paper, scissor mechanics" (strategy A has an advantage against strategy B but a disadvantage against strategy C etc.). In Monopoly you want to buy everything you land on except utilities and especially buy and develop red and orange properties since these has a much higher landing risk than others (strictly statistically). What a dominant strategy does is once again to take away agency from the player. - No push towards an end game trigger: Most games in general pushes the game forward. For example in Settlers of Catan you can gain points in but not lose them (worst case a subset of them can be transferred to another player) and anything you do to help yourself will (potentially) award you points. So the game will naturally progress towards the end game trigger. When a game lacks this it can basically drag on forever (even without someone trying to do this), a player can actively stall the game (for Monopoly, mostly a problem when everyone knows who'll win but one player refuses to forfeit the game... which is not an official end game trigger btw.) and/or a player can technically lose the game long before it actually ends which is just frustrating (Risk is another famous game with this problem). One interesting quirk in Monopoly is that late in the game you want to be stuck in jail as much as possible so it's even beneficial to delay the game. There are attempts to solve these and other flaws but many of the flaws are so built into the core game of Monopoly that it makes the "improved versions" something that don't even resembles Monopoly anymore. And once again; it's perfectly okay to like Monopoly I'm just sad that I think most people like it because they've not been exposed to better games, not because Monopoly is actually the best game for them. I know my kids who've been exposed to tons of games have left Monopoly in the closet for many years now, parents to my kids' friends have asked what their kids played here because their kids now ask for it and adult friends who've been over for casual gaming nights have suggested Monopoly, been exposed to something else, asked where they can buy it and, as far as I know, not gone back to Monopoly again. That's my issue and that's what I assess is happening here .) One last comment: Game design was not a big topic too long ago so it's an area that's still rapidly improving even though boardgames have existed since forever. There are still old gems like chess or more recently e.g. Catan, Puerto Rico, Alhambra, TIcket to Ride, Carcassonne etc. but many old games have been surpassed mechanically simply because people can be paid to spend time on researching this today which wasn't possible when e.g. Monopoly came out.

It was designed by 19-year old Kari Mannerla in 1951. Mannerla had never visited Africa so the game is comically inaccurate, has some racial stereotypes and has a very colonialist style where the players go to Africa to take gemstones and bring them back to Europe. It has terrible game mechanics and hardcore boardgamers loathe it, but it is a very nostalgic game as pretty much every Finn has played it. It is very easy to learn so it is often the first proper board games kids learn to play.
