I just love so see vids of people coming to Sweden and see what they know about Sweden before they came just gets shot down. There is sooo much talk about Sweden that is not even close to the truth. Like the word Viking, there is no word Viking that the "Vikings" used. Closest you can get to it is "North Men". The same with Berserker, closest means "Bear Pelt". That was for special honour guards or special worriers. Sorry, I really love the "Viking" stuff, and yes, I do watch the TV Serie. I´m only human

We were in L.A. in the audience in a recording of "The Voice" in 2019, and a guy walked around with his microphone on stage to get the audience pumped up for the show. He came to our side and asked where everybody was from, and we screamed "Sweden!!", he immediately bashed us (for him, jokingly) for IKEA! He asked us why we had to have such difficult assembly instructions, that he would never buy anything at Ikea because of their instructions.. blablabla.. 🙄 Anyway, everyone else in the audience thought it was funny.. 🤔 Two backstage employees, that happened to be Swedish, had heard that and reacted with "wtf?😂". They found us in the exit que afterwards and chatted with us to make sure we weren't deeply offended. They said they were going to "confront" him later.. 😂

The people in the area now called Russia called the viking raiders "Rus men" alot of the Vikings stayed behind started settlements. That's kind of what Vikings did and setting up triad routes. So they became Russians. Now, i'm not saying that Russians are of Scandinavian decent. Some probably are, and there is a mix between Scandinavian and Slavic dna. The scholarly consensus holds that they were originally Norse people, mainly originating from Sweden, settling and ruling along the river-routes between the Baltic and the Black Seas from around the 8th to 11th centuries AD. They formed a state known as Kievan Rus', which was initially a multiethnic society where the ruling Norsemen merged and assimilated with Slavic, Baltic and Finnic tribes, ending up with Old East Slavic as their common language.

Some of their accents are pretty revealing as to where in Sweden they're from as well. Fredrik Claesson has exactly the same prosody that he (being from Stockholm) has in Swedish - look at the video where he translates hockey terms. Go-to place if you're young or need something basic. Vikings - A lot of the mentality about being tough/being bearded draws parallels to the vikings. But it's mostly something other countries mention about scandinavians than ourselves. Swedish chef - No that's an American talk show thing. Nothing Swedish about it except for the name. Just a meme.

That's what's so funny are the Swede's reaction to the Chef....that it has nothing to do with Sweden or Swedish culture, However, the character is rumored to be based on Lars Backman, a real Swedish chef that Jim Henson based his character on. Supposedly Jim Hensen had seen a failed TV pilot show with Lars where he was throwing spoons and pots etc...out of frustration. Lars claims that he looked like that Chef back in the day. Jim Henson never admitted to this, but it seems to be the case.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lars_B%C3%A4ckman

One stereotype about vikings is indeed the iconic horned helmets. These did not exist, and i'm sure that while they would look intimidating to a foe, they would be useless in battle. Could you imagine facing off with someone with a helmet like that? It's a perfect thing to grab a hold of and tear the man down. And yes, we were warriors, but at the same time vikings were also traders. The view that the vikings only were strong brute berserks, who raped, pillaged and burned is a litte narrow minded. In reality, most nordic folk was simple farmers.
@Bragosso6 жыл бұрын
Simple farmers with a desire for adventure, huh? Not too many other people traveled the world like the Vikings did back then, remember this is not too far from the age of the Roman Empire. They traveled, looted, fought and traded all the way from north America to Constantinople. Few other people can claim to have done that until the age of colonization. And regarding the helmet, it's true the vikings did not have such helmets. Though there have been plenty of cases where soldiers have worn horn helmets. Just google "Teutonic Helmet". So "useless in battle" must be disputed, psychology, as you said, must play a role here. Sun Tzu said that wars are a moral contest that are won before they are fought. Looking intimidating surely played a big role, important enough even though they risk having a disadvantage in the actual combat.
@sabotsabotskij70476 жыл бұрын
The "teutonic helmets" with ornaments were most likely for ceramonial purposes. There is a version of a turkish helmet with a single pike on the top that they supposedly used to charge their enemies with. In most cases helmets in battle has been for protection only, and in most cases they prioritze seeing your enemy rather than intimidating your enemy or using your helmet it to fight with... they had far more efficient weapons wielded by hand to do that, as I'm sure you know.

Vikings didn't have horns on the helmet. They had nose guards and the more expensive ones eye guards. The axe is wrong too, no double blade. We still are pragmatic.

Just to get this right - you need the scientific name. Lingon (in linginberries) is: Vaccinium vitis-idaea and nothing els. You can either just stir them with sugar (rårödrad lingon) or boil them with sugar and some water (lingonsylt) "Sylt" is sort of jam... And since we talk about swedish berries. Blåbär - is not the same as blueberry. The swedish "blåbär" is Vaccinium myrtillus whilst the american is Vaccinuim corymbosum. The difference is that the V. myrtillus is smaller and the pulp is dark purple.

Why do we swedes say "Wiking" insted of "Viking"...*sigh*?
@grevevondy85306 жыл бұрын
Because english isn’t swedish people’s first language? *sigh*
@johanhagdahl77016 жыл бұрын
I´m a swede myself, and we all speak fairly good english, but viking is a word we often mispronounce. I dont know why! Sure, english is not our first language, but why do so many swedes say one particular word wrong so often, that is what I query.
@theicemanleaveth6 жыл бұрын
Isn't the english word "Viking" only spelled with a 'V' because it's an anglicization of the original word?
@ecMonify6 жыл бұрын
the origin of the word "viking" is unclear and very much debated. some think it comes from the word "wijk", but again, it's debatable :)
@johanhagdahl77016 жыл бұрын
But even if it was spelled with a W, it would still be pronouced as a V in scandinavia, even during the viking era...I think...

No offense to any Swedes but who remembers Don Cherry's quote about the first Swedish players to play in the NHL in the 70s. " Boy I'll tell ya what, that Hammarstrom character for the leafs could play the whole game with an egg in his pants and it wouldn't break" in reference to lack of physicality , man has that ever changed 👍🇨🇦🇸🇪

The Swedish pronunciation of IKEA is "eek-eh-ah", regardless of what pronunciations these Swedish players use. Swedish people _never_ pronounce that name like "eye-key-ah" when they speak Swedish.

Sorry Swedes.... I had meatballs in IKEA store in India and couldnt have one more bite of it. It had no taste. They served it with some sause and boiled veggies. No offence, Swedish food is not my cup of tea but you guys are cool and one of the nicest ppl.
@swedishlina5 жыл бұрын
As a swede, I completely agree with you. They do taste of nothing, however a home cooked meatball and home made sauce, and with the most important side dish of Lingonberries do taste fantastic. I have now lived in Australia for 20 years and if I get homesick I do to IKEA to do a bit of retail therapy, and I do buy a lot food goodies in the food part just outside of the checkouts. Even if they have now replace a lot of the original brand foods with their own IKEA brand, certainly now up to the real standards of Sweden.
