Surely with all of the modern tech AI and everything .Somebody somewhere needs to invent Smell-O-Vision just for the throttle whacks.

Could you please tell me in a nutshell what they are doing during these brief engine start-ups in the pit area? What are they checking or looking for please? And does the fellow disconnect the hose at or near the blower hat to stop the engine? What is this hose for? Is it used only in testing or is it used during an actual race? Thank you SO MUCH for bringing this video to us. It is SO interesting to watch and thrilling to listen to! Best wishes.
@theaccelerator49089 ай бұрын
They are basically warming the engine up. Checking pressures, making sure ignition is right, fuel pressure is correct oil etc. The hose is a fuel line when he pulls it it causes it to lean out and turn the engine off. The throttle whack you see preformed is to seat the clutch

@@theaccelerator4908 It was, back in the day; no longer done and typically, throttle whacks are hard on the valve train and occasionally result in a supercharger backfire so with no need to seat the clutch they all stopped doing it. If you hear one now, it's for crowd-pleasing purposes. God bless Scott Palmer.

It's ridiculous how violent those engines are when they smack the throttle. Another thing I've always noticed is how high they rev up when they're being leaned out, but never seen any info on RPM.
@theaccelerator4908 Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard from some people they idle pretty high around 2500 rpm. But yeah when they lean it out they rev it out very high and for a good amount of time. I would assume maybe 4500 rpm maybe I’m not sure
@BB.......... Жыл бұрын
@@theaccelerator4908 2500 RPM at idle is close from what I've seen over the years, but they really climb those last few seconds when leaned out. :)
@mosquitofleetfishing65997 ай бұрын
They idle at about 2700 and they will rev to about 4000 being leaned out to kill it. They usually hit 6500-7000 on a throttle whack and sometimes a touch higher. In the run, it’s 7400-8000.
@twistedcranknation6 ай бұрын
They don't lean out they cut the fuel line off and switch it back to gas to shut them off. They can't start on Nitro. If you wanna know why look up top fuel car nitro Hydraulic.
@mosquitofleetfishing65996 ай бұрын
@@twistedcranknation it’s still leaning out when they cut the fuel. It’s breathing from a positive displacement blower, not naturally so it does lean out. And you’re right. It would lock it up hydraulically.
@billk96284 ай бұрын
Correct me if I am wrong, but they start these engines on methanol, then switch to Nitro once running. That would explain the sound change, and the performance change as well. The ignition timing would be drastically different from one to the other and that is why the engine seems to rev up just after shut down. Leans out to shut down. Lean always causes RPM increases for a time.
@asennusruponen98673 ай бұрын
I have heard methanol also nitro only on when run
@asennusruponen98673 ай бұрын
And if you ran on nitro and it stops you cannot start it you have to make flush first all excess nitro out it will or may explode
@billk96283 ай бұрын
@@asennusruponen9867 That would be because they go through 13 gallons a run or so. Hydrolock would occur as soon as the throttle was backed off. I know they go from ingition to diesel in the first 60 feet and then its a run away diesel until they shut down the fuel. You can hear the change at the 60 foot mark in the sound. They just wind up like crazy and then it's a matter of clutch controlling the power.
@klutchdust43462 ай бұрын

if you're not wearing hearing protection, you're going to go deaf. This sound WILL damage your hearing bit by bit, if not entirely if you're too close. Everytime you're standing by this bearing the pain, specially the throttle blips, little cellular hairs in your inner ear are breaking off. You'll be saying "What?!" more often. FYI, you don't look badass/cool or anything of the sort by standing there calm and cool with no hearing protection. You look like an idiot who isn't aware of the damage actively being done to screw you and irritate others for life. Wear hearing protection. That shit don't come back, once its gone, its gone.
