The familiar-catching definitely is frustrating at times. I think my least favorite aspect was learning when you 100% the game, you unlock a car to drive in the overworld. It sounds cool, but when you've nothing left to do in the game, it feels kinda bittersweet.

It's been a few years since I posted this one, but I remember the "all-out defense" working fairly well as long as you time it right before the highly telegraphed attacks. But I do wish there were more defense options, or maybe some AI customization like in Tales games.

The banes you described in the review have proven to be an absolute boon for me, as someone who has a very small library of demanding but fulfilling RPGs. Taming a familiar I didn't have yet and level grinding the ones I do have while scouting for rare drops cancel each other out. It's like making a separate dish on the stove while your deep dish has to sit in the oven for a while. Absolutely the best way to enjoy the game is fulfilling requests and filling out out Errand Cards for the quality of life improvements. For the alchemy aspect, food is definitely primed for end-game since the feeding process and crafting high-end snacks are so damn tedious. The medals and gear crafting on the other hand are more accessible and absolutely insane. At the moment I'm actually maining Swaine with medals that boost his attack speed and maximizes damage at full HP. And since he is a gunner, he keeps these benefits, and the build renders his MP usage negligible, allowing for more flexibility with his preferred familiars' offensive capability. I fell out of the Pokemon scene hard, outside Legends Arceus, and Ni No Kuni has been scratching my itch since the spring of this year.

I love this game a lot. Oliver is such a sweet, pure character with sweet motives, and the ways that the narrative ties into his own story makes me cry my eyes out. Even now I get teary eyed just hearing some of the music and I haven't even played it since the PS3 lol. Really should go back to this one again. Gameplay wise I remember loving it. I got REALLY into it and was just swapping characters left and right mid-battle and giving them all direct commands lol, it's tbh a lot to juggle and kind of a lot to ask from people, but IF you can get into the groove of playing that way it can be a great time (although yes, having to tell everyone to defend manually was a pain lol...)

Awesome review as always. I played through this about a year ago and was stoked about the Ghibli affiliation. The gameplay wasn't for me, and I think you nailed it on all your commentary on the gameplay. The story is where it's at, and that's what kept me going. However, the story started really dragging for me at about the halfway point. I was also a tad disappointed at how few hand-drawn animated scenes there were. The game teases you with a TON of hand-drawn scenes early in the game. Then those kinda disappear til the end. Not my cup, but I'm glad I played it.

I played Ni No Kuni back on the PS3 back in 2013 and my experience on the Switch version last year differed greatly. I was a lot more critical of the game. I did feel the game lacked something. I got tired of the whole one city per continent/region. The towns and cities are visual beautiful but you can't explore them much, you can enter like two shops and the main castle which is just one room, it's not like Dragon Quest where you can explore every corner of the city. Another thing I noticed there wasn't a lot of characters in the game. For example in Ding Dong Dell, the only important character there was the Cat King. The game felt empty in many regards. But I still liked it

I totally agree with you but their is just one thing. It's not pokemon, the familiales are not capture, they choose to follow you. So THIS make the game different because it make them choosing to participate to the quest of saving the/their world with the heroe. And this makes the game more clever AND benevolent than every other gatcha games. You Can totally play the game with a child watching because the games is full of positive messages without being childish.

REALLY enjoyed this game over all. I think the only thing that felt a bit off for me, was after the final added chapter of the game added for when it was brought over to PS3. On the one hand, it was nice to have more game to play, but on the other hand, it definitely felt like a bit of an after thought over all and just didn't flow as well, similar to the added content of the DS version of Chrono Trigger. Regardless though, still a great game. Nice job on the video!

I enjoyed this game well enough on PS3, but I was disappointed by the story content. Esther and Swaine didn't contribute much, there were few anime cutscenes later on, and NPC conversations could be very dull. It was just lacking in energy. Oh, wow. This is the first and last time I'll respond to you on this channel. In exactly 2 minutes and 14 seconds, you managed to show me your highly sensitive to what a 'spoiler' is. Different to each person. What I described is maybe within the first hour or so in the game. I mention what you'll be doing mending hearts - you dunno whoses hearts, their story on how they allowed it to break in the first place, the journey to get it back. The briefing on the characters to much for you? Knowing the daughter of a great sage? You dunno who the great sage is, why he's the great sage, or Swaine, a petty thief with more to him. Too much to know that there is more than one note to a character? Or was it Shadar and the white witch? Seeing them too much even though they're on the box art? A suggestion for you, if you are THAT sensitive to spoilers, perhaps don't watch any video on a game you're interested in. I would say thanks for the "feedback" but this comment doesn't have anything constructive and is really just a mean individual. Byeeeeeeeeeee.
