10-15g is fine as long as it's balanced with weight

Where in the water column do u try to keep the jig?
@popofishing4 жыл бұрын
You generally want to be as close to the bottom as possible. I will start of by setting a depth of 5-6ft. If you start snagging bottom while drifting, just reduce the depth by a foot. If you are not hitting bottom, keep increasing the depth until you get to the bottom. Also, don't underestimate plastic minnows on the Niagara River. They work great. Good luck!

@@popofishing would you also recommend live minnows in this situation ?

@@findingKMo They also work if you don't mind carrying them down there.

How deep do you go on a slip float ? Niagara is new to me cant figure out the depth
@camanderson99544 жыл бұрын
guy at bass pro said use different size split shots all the way down and it gives the roe bag and nice presentation. have you ever used this method before?( told me same as what you did except the split shots are different sized from largest to smallest a few inches apart )
@popofishing4 жыл бұрын
I've done that before but I gave up on it. It still works as long as you have enough overall weight in your combined split shots. For me, it''s just easier to buy and use one split shot size. I have found over the years that people use all sorts of split shot patterns successfully. The goal is just to get the bait down deep. The depth is big and the currents are strong. That's why some people just bulk all their split shots above the leader in order to quickly sink the presentation to the bottom. I put enough shots directly under the float to balance it, 3-4 directly above the leader to sink the bait to the bottom and just 2-3 in between. Get's the job done. It's not really rocket science, it all works. Cheers!

@@popofishing makes sense. what depth are they hanging out in the river right now? about 12ft?
@popofishing4 жыл бұрын
They are always hugging bottom around the shore. Try and adjust the depth so that you are right above bottom depending on where you are fishing at the time. Roughly speaking, that depth will be anywhere between 5-15ft.

Isn't 1ft quite short for the leader? Thought you'd need leaders at least 3ft in length.
@popofishing4 жыл бұрын
1ft is perfectly fine, even in the clearest water. I've never had issues with it. The steelhead are not that shy.

Do you recommend fixed or slip for whirlpools

They both work. It's just personal preference really.

what type of rod and how long?
@popofishing4 жыл бұрын
I have a custom rod but you are typically looking at some type of float rod between 10-15ft. Although I've float fished with an 8'6 rod before just fine.
