I'm humbled by this film Nial and grateful to know a little more about your journey. When we met years ago, both wearing the social masks our professional lives required from us, we did occasionally find a way of connecting more deeply. I remember we had some very honest conversations about vulnerability and grief. I'm not sure I knew how to do that justice then but time and experience seem to create a unique patina to our characters. From this beautifully made film I see a glimpse of soulful evolution and am inspired by it.

Thank you Anne, Yes, isn't it the case that only after our souls have been washed out and put through the wringer we finally have the chance to be ourselves. That 'unique patina' is hard earned and proudly worn. I really appreciate your kind words. N.

Nial, I just found your channel and watched some of your videos. I love your work !! I am 65 and only started to paint a few years back (pandemic) and enjoy it a lot even though my day time job as a scientist (nearing the end of his scientific career) does not always give me enough time to spend behind the easel. Your staory about your father touched me.... I lost mine 30 years ago, the year I was moving from The Netherlands to the US. We had a lovely bond, but did not have much in common..... one of the last memories of him was him and me on a soccer field, me hitting golfballs for fun, him with his rain coat and cigarette in his hand just enjoying spending a few minutes with his son without having to worry about a thing....... watching your video brought that memory back.... thank you for that.

What a beautiful film. In my minds eye I could see you painting with your dad , as a little boy. The language used in this film gives me a sense of peaceful contemplation and a yearning to break out my sketchbook. I am only just beginning my journey with paints . I love what your dad said about learning to mix all different shades of grey. Thank for making the film 🙏😊

I studied Vermeer in university and even wrote my thesis on him. I was/am captivated by his ability to draw one into the work through its beauty and simplicity. All the artists I studied however are long dead and I've been looking for a favourite contemporary artist to capture my imagination. I believe you've done so, sir :)

Wow Nial ... I did not want the film to end which is a tribute to yourself plus Tom Martin and friends. I am proud to be able to say I have known you for 15 years (Antidote #1 at Keswick Hall) and have watched and experienced your life transitioning in several areas over those years with ongoing admiration. You now seem more grounded than ever before which has released your full creativity. You are an inspiration not only to me but to several others whom we both know. Continue being true to yourself Nial, that is your path.

What an inspiring and thoughtful film. Its themes and emotions are applicable to so many people and situations, not just to artists or the artists within us. Thank you for sharing this with us Nial and thank you to Tom for filming it so beautifully. P.S. Tom's website link needs amending.

Thank you so much for this insight to a part of you. Sharing your relationship with your father and your painting was very touching. My heart felt feelings watching this made me tearful but excited about the process of wanting and being a painter. And yes I too looked at my hands and could see my mothers hands. This happen when I was younger and it is nice that even now I still do it from time to time. I haven't been painting long a few years but with each brush stroke over time I learn something new. A process I continue to love.
