Fact is , martin o Neill was his manager at the time at Sunderland and warned him many times about social media making idiotic posts (not do with the poppy). I have a feeling that he had a word with him for the sake of the fans and the club that he wear the poppy but James refused. Some feel that's honourable. Personally I feel it disrespected the club and the fans and he paid the ultimate price. Don't condone the behavior and death threats he recieved but he made his bed and he had to lie in it.

The people in the UK didn't know what was going on in Ireland..I wear a white poppy for all who died during WW1 and WW2 in the fight against Hitler..These English fans need to look at the history of the war against the crown...I don't have a problem with any man wearing the poppy but please respect our right not to wear it...peace
