Out of Gas is, for my money, the single best episode of television. It's my all-time favorite, at least. It handles the back and forth nature so effortlessly, keeping the suspense til the end.

Mal as a character is a very unusual collection of traits, and I think that's why he's so compelling to watch. About many things he can be flexible, opportunistic, even morally ambiguous. When it comes to core principles though, there is no ambiguity, no flexibility. He absolutely does what he believes he has to, no matter the cost. That's a kind of contrast, and complexity that is amazingly rare in TV characters. Also, honorable mention for Zoey who proves literally every chance she gets, why she is the first person you want on your crew when things get rough.

So glad you finally got to Out Of Gas. This is my favorite episode from the entire series. I love the flashbacks from how Wash, Kaylee, Inara and Jayne came to be on Serenity(Kaylee's was my favorite). My favorite scenes are Mal asking if everyone will still be there when he wakes up again(never fails to bring tears to my eyes) and the very end, when you see the expression on Mal's face the first time he sees the ship that will become Serenity. It was beautiful.

At the end of the shoot for the episode, Alan had swiped the Big Red Button as a souvenir. After the series was canceled, Joss tried to shop the show to another network or make a studio deal for a movie. (UPN, SYFY, SPIKE, etc.) Alan Tudyk (Wash) sent the Big Red Button with a message. "When you get your miracle, push this and we will return." Eventually, Universal Studios greenlit the movie. Even today, if Joss hit the button, Browncoats would respond.

This is the episode where it really hammers home how much of a family the crew is. Which is partially why this show is so damn good. You see glimmers of it in other IPs (Star Trek, Expanse, ect.), but nothing quiet has the same warmth and feel of Firefly/Serenity.

Fun fact: second, he got the engine, running power back on heating in environmental systems going again. With the increase in temperature, the blood loss from the GSW would accelerate. Mal put life in Serenity by (almost) giving his.

The ship is named Serenity after the Battle of Serenity Valley in the War of Unification (Independence). This was inferred from a conversation in the episode Bushwhacked. IIRC, the story is that while Gina Torres (Zoey Washburne) appears in this episode, her screen time is short because the actor was getting married to Laurence Fishburne. Her accidental injury was the excuse to minimize her screen time.

The part the failed was mentioned in the first two episodes Kaylee warned Mal. “If that compression coil busts were drifting.” Then she tore the engine room up in The Train Job. And said “it’s cause someone didn’t replace that crappy compression coil.”

This is my favorite episode. The storytelling is amazing. I love the way the three timelines were woven together. While the time jumps might have been a little jarring, they helped keep things straight by the intelligent use of different color filters for each timeline. We knew how Simon, River and Book arrived on Serenity, but this episode helped fill out details for the rest of the crew.

How do you trust Jayne? Jayne's needs are few and simple. Keep him happy and he'll stay (mostly) in line and do his job... and he's very good at doing his job. Mal didn't win him over by offering him riches beyond imagining. Mal won him over by offering him fair compensation and slightly better living conditions, along with recognizing and acknowledging what Jayne brings to the table. While he's not exactly the sentimental type (Vera notwithstanding), for Jayne, who's used to being treated like dirt, being treated like a human being is worth a lot. Whatever conflicts pop up between Mal and Jayne, Jayne isn't quick to throw away the few people in the 'verse with whom he's formed some fondness and friendship... which doesn't include Simon and River at the start of the show, but that's another story.

Remember in episode 1, at the end, discussion between Mal and Jayne about how the lawman got loose, Jayne says he didn't have anything to do with that, etc? Mal: "How come you didn't turn on me?" Jayne: "Money wasn't good enough." Mal trusts Jayne to be Jayne, that's why he told Inara to not trust him and don't let him take over.

Whether it becomes your favorite episode or not - This episode is a masterpiece in story telling. It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity. It is at this time that I like to share some thoughts to Firefly reactors regarding the crew. I like to think every crew member represents an aspect of Mal. Aspects of Mal: Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case) Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew) Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime (with Book doing right being the counter balance to this). River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war) Serenity - In an abstract way the ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking, the inability to settle under Alliance rule, and Mal's desire to wander.

I keep thinking she mentions it in Shindig as well before she asks to buy the dress (around the time they're getting off the space ship) but I strongly suspect I'm mistaken. I'd need to go back and re-watch the episode to actually check such a claim. I don't suppose that's a bad reason to go and enjoy it all over again :).

To me this was the perfect episode of television. The script writing was perfect, it was artfully directed, and the lighting and music gave it a real emotional impact. I honestly get a little teary every time I watch it, even though I know what's going to happen. EDIT: Now that I think about it, the emotional impact is also partly because we finally get to see everyone's story (aside from Simon and River, but we know where they came in and a little of their story already), and it shows the promise of what the series could've been like if they'd got a second season. I would've loved to see more slow paced emotional episodes like this, but sadly the series was cut well short of its full potential. I am thankful we got the movie to tie up some of the loose ends though.

I see from the comments that I'm not the only one whose favorite episode is this one. I loved getting a chance to see how the crew joined the ship and a glimpse of what some of them were doing before joining Serenity. One thing has always confused me about this episode though. I'm not mechanically inclined, so I don't know how it would actually work, but I assume shuttles have their own life support systems so that they can fly off on their own. So, why couldn't they just open the shuttle doors, run the shuttle life supports without actually launching them, and generate air that way? It might take a toll on the shuttles, but they would be able to breathe, wouldn't they? Anyway, that's just one little question I had about the events of the episode. Despite it, this is still my favorite. So glad you enjoyed it too!

Respect to the pirate captain for realizing he was wrong and not coming back later. Not a lot of respect given that he doublecrossed Mal and shot him, but he definitely could have returned with his crew when Mal passed out and he didn't. He just counted the missing part as a loss and left.

Always wondered why, since they had two shuttles, they couldn't just hook up some type of tow and pull Serenity, using Serenity to refuel the shuttles as they needed. Maybe they didn't have the means to do so, but it would have been a nice option if they could have.

The shuttles are only for going down to a planet & back up to the Serenity, which is orbiting. They’re not equipped to go at high speeds or for any kind of distance. It’d be a bit like using a couple ebikes to tow a semi truck.

I had to smile when you described Jayne as simple, because, yes that's what he appears to be. but I'm not totally convinced. Here's why, if you go back through and listen to Jayne's vocabulary, there's several times he uses big words in the correct context, words he shouldn't know if he was actually as simple as he seems. You made the comment about how can Mal trust him, it's simple he can't and doesn't. :) Although I'd despise Jayne if I ever met him in person, oddly enough he is one of my top favorites in the crew.

AFAIK, you can do blood transfusion with different blood types - it's not great, there would be side effects, but if you really need it, you can do it. And, BTW, type O is not quite the "universal donor" - it is still better to match blood types EXACTLY.

Wash, Mal, and Zoe were in the War. Since blood types were discovered, militaries have blood typed everybody, against the day someone will need a transfusion, and the doctor will need to know about the recipient and the donor. I can't imagine that not being done for everybody onboard.

Not necessarily. If you get a wrong match, it can cause a fatal autoimmune reaction that causes the loss of more blood than was added. And the reaction can be permanent, causing irreversible continuous autoimmune hemolysis for life. It should only be done if it's very clear that the patient will not survive without an emergency transfusion. And the more mistyped or mismatched blood you give, the higher the likelihood of killing the patient. Many were lost due to a bad transfusion before the rules were worked out.

Too bad the Captain never heard of oxygen candles. You can store them for years and when needed ignite one making oxygen and heat. They have them in submarines right here on Earth-that-was. Oh well still a great episode.

This episode... is broken up. It seems disjointed at first with all the flashbacks and all out of order... but it is a cool glimpse into how the "original" crew came together. Mal and Zoey knew each other in the war, but the rest coming on board was nice to see. Obviously we saw when the Doc (Simon), his Sister (River), the Shepard (Book) came on but the rest were already there and now we know something of their story.

If they didn't die by freezing they would have died from CO2 poisoning. There could still by oxygen in the air but once the concentration of CO2 becomes too high it will be fatal.
