Of all the English finger-style folk-heritage musicians Nic is the man I most wanted to emulate in every respect. To me his guitar playing and his vocals will always be mind-blowingly unique and instantly recognisable.

hear hear! love discovering new folk songs and it seems we can always rely on Nic Jones to do a beautiful job of a rendition. i'd never heard this one til just now, and now i'm hooked

It’s interesting how these ballads turn up in different places with different names. I always knew this song as the Lakes of Coolfin. Needless to say Nic performs this version with great passion and expertise.

This man should be a superstar, I'd love a copy of this album, well done for putting it up. Hooray for Orpington.

Nic will always be a master of his trade, but if you're looking for authentic "English Roots" folk music, check out this Guy. Phil Drane. Stripped back, uncluttered vocals with superb guitar work

Fair enough! For what it's worth I think Carthy is quite simply the most important and innovative of all the singer guitarists to come out of the folk revival, and I also think Martin Simpson is a very good singer. But it's just a matter of taste, really.

Nic and Martin are very different and brilliant guitarists, why compare?

To the man who said it is Nic not Nick, these are semantics which don't matter and aren't always true. His first LP was with a group called The Halliard - It's the Irish In Me. He was Nick Jones on that LP.

Hi Wrongwayup - just posted a video response, but the first one was a mistake! Meant it to be "Coolfin" by Stamp Collective

A great performer, check out Nick Dow, another star in the same ilk.

Martin Carthy was a superb guitarist yet Nic Jones eclipsed him. Where Carthy was sometimes brittle in his technique, Jones was fluid and flowing. Nic Jones was the greatest singer and the greatest guitarist the British Folk revival has ever seen.

Just a small point - 7 years on Martin Carthy still IS a superb guitarist.

@tamcd1508 I do have a few Carthy albums, and they're definitely good. Carthy has probably also influenced Nic Jones a bit, as Jones has influenced others (maybe they even influenced each other?).

Always loved this song, but as a scandanavian i find it odd that British people die in temperate water.... Finnish kids be hopping naked out if the snow and into the frozen lake...

I hope you dont mind me pointing out that your comment is slightly wrong - it's Nic not Nick :-)

@tamcd1508 Well, Simpson is a fantastic guitar player, but in my opinion he can't match Nic Jones vocally. I like Martin Carthy in some of his tunes, but generally not that much. I do recognize how important he has been for folk music though. But I guess you can say I'm just a Nic Jones fan... I was just hooked from the moment I first heard his music.

Except, of course, for Martin Carthy and Martin Simpson..........

Except for maybe Paul Brady, Nic Jones has no equal in this genre.
