Oh god, the word "Animayhem" gave me PTSD flashbacks haha. Back in the 90's when anime was juuuust getting ramped up, someone made a trading card game in the vein of Magic the Gathering, and they called it "Animayhem", and it featured characters from series like DBZ, Ranma 1/2, YuYu Hakusho, and some others. It was a terrible game, unbalanced and just tried way too hard to be deep. There was ONE funny bit though, they had an image of Master Roshi from DBZ holding a mug of beer, but the card's name was "Frothy Mug Of Water", with the tagline of "You have been licensed for release in America and have been heavily censored. Lose a turn". (in the original censored DBZ, Roshi's mug of beer was colored blue, but they couldn't do anything about the froth! LOL)

I'm so glad people from this generation think that the music in this rocks - it wasn't just us, at the time lol And, in BHC 2, there is a slight alteration in Billy's character - I can't wait to see what you think! PS The 'Serge' actor was onscreen for less than 5 minutes and it got him a sitcom that ran for 8 years - the 80s classic, Perfect Strangers. Innocent, loving Balki Bartokomous travels from Mypos to live with his jaded cousin from Chicago (who has no idea he exists). It is still a favorite of mine.

Film fact: Most of the funny dialogue in this film was totally improvised. In fact, in the supercops scene, the reason John Ashton (Taggart) was clenching his face was because he was desperately trying not to laugh. In that same scene, Judge Reinhold (Rosewood) was pinching his pocket because he was also trying not to laugh himself.

Originally Sylvester Stallone was going to star in the movie, and even wrote a draft of the script, which was more darker and more violent than the final cut of the film. When Paramount executives read the script, it was rejected and Stallone turned it into the 1986 action thriller COBRA.

Two awesome things about this movie: 1. The guy playing inspector Todd (Axel's boss in Detroit) was a real inspector who was only supposed to be in an advisory role, but was so good they decided to cast him. 2. Sly Stallone was supposed to play Axel Foley. He had a signed contract and the studio was really afraid that he'd sue them for breach of contract when they wanted to go with Eddie Murphy to make it into more of a comedy. Stallone ok'd it though and the studio commissioned Cobra as a sort of compensation.

For me, the pivotal scene of the movie is in the strip club. Axel goes from wisecracking smartass to experienced police officer in the blink of an eye. Taggart, who has until this point only seen the smartass side of him, recognizes the change and starts taking Axel seriously for the first time. Axel Foley really is a great character (with a killer theme tune), and here Eddie Murphy showed that he wasn't just a comedian, he was an _actor._ Please watch Beverly Hills Cop 2, it's great. I didn't personally like 3 very much (it's the only one of the first three I've only bothered to watch once), but if you want to watch the one that just came out, I suppose you should watch that too. I haven't seen the recent one yet, so I have no opinion on that.

I read a book about "social engineering" and they basically used Axel Foley as the perfect example of somebody who can social engineer people into doing things against their normal will or practices. Basically Axel Foley knows how to manipulate things by creating outrage in the boss or whoever is involved will be willing to do anything to prevent that from happening

To think: John Ashton (Taggart) was only 36 when this movie was made! He is also great in the totally (still) underrated "Midnight Run" with DeNiro and Grodin. That one's worth a watch.

Judge Reinhold was hilarious in this as well. His character Billy grew alot in number 2 and is one of the funniest characters. One of Reinhold's earliest films is "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". (1982). You guys should definitely react to that one.

He's great in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, did well in Santa Clause and I really liked "Vice Versa" (1988) which was considered to be the poor-mans "Big" at the time. Wrongfully so I'd say, It was fun and it seemed Judge had a blast during the shoot.

Another fact: Sylvester Stallone was originally supposed to play the role of Axel Foley. The script was to be expanded to include numerous action scenes. This meant that the planned budget was to rise to around 20 million US dollars. However, the studio did not want to increase the budget and Stallone could not be persuaded to shoot the film without major action scenes. So Stallone was dropped as the lead actor and Eddie Murphy was hired instead. Instead of the expensive action scenes, the script was expanded to include comedic elements and tailored to Eddie Murphy.

Eddie Murphy's 4th film, first leading role and also his debut as producer. The beginning of his reign as an comedy superstar on film. From the late Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (pre-Top Gun). Grammy Award winner for Best Score Soundtrack in Visual Media, Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and the No.1 film of 1984 (dethroning Ghostbusters). The score is by Harold Faltermeyer and the 'Axel F' theme is truly legendary. As well, this film's soundtrack is one of the greatest of the era. Movies about Cops prior to BHC were either dramas and or thrillers. Afterwards more comedies about cop characters came to be. Part 2 (directed by Tony Scott) is a major winner of an sequel. Part 3 (directed by John Landis) is the worse and you could be disappointed. The 4th installment aka Axel F on Netflix, pre-40th anniversary is a must see with so much goodness.

Fun Fact: The entire scene of Taggert and Rosewood talking outside of the hotel was ad-libbed and improvised. In the script, all that was written was "Rosewood and Taggert sit in the car." Judge Reinhold however apparently got bored and just started having a goofy conversation with John Ashton. The director was watching the interaction and was laughing so hard at its absurdity that he decided to put it in the finished film. The rest is history.

Inspector Todd, Axel's boss, was, in real life, actually a highly decorated and well respected Detroit Detective. Criminals throughout the city feared him. The Producers loved him so much, they cast him in the movie. This guy was the real Dirty Harry of Detroit!

Seriously, this is pretty much a perfect film. It has everything you want in terms of action and comedy and Murphy delivers. HARD. Great supporting cast and simple plot also keeping everything engaging. Part 2 is generally viewed as not quite as good as this one, but is still pretty damn close and absolutely worth watching! This movie is my childhood, have watched the first and second movie so many times. Even recorded the sound of the 2nd movie to a casette tape from the tv!! and listened to it on my freestyle when we were on vacation trips. so i visualized the scenes in my head by listening to it :)

Great review! Per the producers most of Eddie's lines were improvised because they said that he was funnier than anything that they would write. And part 2 is just as good and a bit funnier.

Ronny Cox actually could only have a cameo in Beverly Hills Cop 2 because he was shooting robocop at another studio and they wouldn't release him. So they were able to pick up a few moments with Cox, one during his robocop filming and he was on break, and one after (You can tell because he has the identical haircut to Dick Jones in one set of shots, not that his hairstyle changes much).

There was an amazing action comedy released recently called “hundreds of beavers”, essentially it’s like a live action black and white cartoon. I cant recommend it enough.

Great reaction to this comedy/action 80s classic guys...if you're looking for another movie similar (in both comedy & action) to 'Beverly Hills Cop' (and it even had Harold Faltermeyer do the soundtrack as well), then check out 'Fletch' (1985) with Chevy Chase as a newspaper reporter who has an unorthodox way of uncovering crimes & corruption. It is one of Chevy's best....
