Discussing them wont solve anything. Mental health problems are product of todays society as a whole in my opinion. If you have a ton of pressure to perform, it can be at your job, school, relationships or anything, and you combine that with a general dissatisfaction/misery in your life and when you don't perform it can just be too much to handle. Its much easer to handle pressure if you are happy with yourself and your life. Most people have their own struggles, but life these days just feel empty, dull and pointless regardless of what you are doing. There is no sense of community or solidarity in todays world, everyone only cares about themselves. Thats not how humans are supposed to live, not how we are designed/evloved to be like. I highly doubt mental illness was a problem back in the tribal societies for instance, though life was tough back then in other ways obviously. I predict mental issues becoming more and more prevalent in the future as well.

@@Skumtomten1 I agree with a lot of what you said. But I also believe that it is important to talk about it, especially as men since we're being thought to remain strong at all times. The first step in treating a disease (which is what a mental health problem is) is acknowledging that it exists, whether it's as a society or as an individual. Just what you and I are doing right now may seem simple but yet, it could help someone that just needs to open up. I talk with experience, trust me. Anyways, cheers mate.

It’s not a golf issue. It’s a life issue. Everyone feels pressure in different ways. I assume Grayson Murray had an untreated mental illness and there would have been an issue if he wasn’t treated properly, regardless of whether he was a professional golfer.

The greatest and saddest comment ever. This is the truth. Nothing to do with golf. Everything to do with mental illness

These guys get paid huge amounts of money to play a game. They aren't struggling to make ends meet, and they aren't out there saving lives and fighting wars. It would be easy to dismiss their trials and tests as trivial, but they do have massive amounts of pressure and expectations placed on their shoulders. They are right there in the public eye, facing scrutiny for every move they make and every word they say. Golf is infuriating for just a weekend amateur, so I can't imagine having to keep that drive straight or get the right pace on that putt in order to make my living. They perform at a level where a driver face left one degree open for a tiny fraction of a second could cost them tens of thousands of dollars. Their caddies, families, and the rest of their team depend on them to deliver on the course, so it isn't surprising that some of them have problems coping.

You didn't need to mention the money part. This is a human issue. Which has contributing factors such as golf which brings loneliness and stress. It's not all winning like scottie. Having money is also not for everyone cause more money more problem is a thing. I even have had issues with family always asking for money, friends borrowing ruining friendships, gambling.

@@MrBath1985 The money part is a factor. Money is a huge stress factor in people's lives. I know that more money more problems is a cliche' that does happen to be true, but no money is also a problem if you ever find yourself in that situation. My point is that these guys, if they are making cuts and placing in tournaments, can and should be living well financially. I was pointing out the human aspect in that, even when you are making millions of dollars and should be comfortable and living well, the human aspect of pressure and expectations can be overwhelming.

One cannot look back and wonder if there was something that they could've said or done to make a difference in that person's life. They struggled with an illness that most probably had gone undiagnosed for many, many years. 5 minutes of pep talk was not going to cure it. He died similarly in the manner my spouse passed. Now I too struggle. I've never had thoughts before, or a family history. My spouse had inherent mental health challenges. Only the person enduring the pain can decide to seek help. Those surrounding the individual can only offer support and guidance. Unless they too struggle, they cannot directly relate. This I understand from hindsight. We live in a selfish world. Many will not pick up the signs. Psychologists and psychiatrists cannot sufficiently provide the proper channels unless they have had a personal connection to the disease. Otherwise, all the education and schooling will not prepare them, or anyone, for this tragedy.
