That very day, the entire universe nearly cancelled itself out. Allow me to explain. It all started when Yūko-chan did her homework. It was a minor disturbance in the space-time continuum, to be fair. But that disturbance was of the exact frequency that causes a dangerous feedback loop, the sort that capsizes ships and breaks wine glasses. They noted this in the show by asking if "it's about to rain," which is a Japanese expression that conveys an idea that something very out of the ordinary is going on. And, indeed, it rained. Not in the normal "a few drops, then a deluge," but an immediate strong rain. The feedback loop is already set in motion. Now normally, the kami, the "holy forces" of the world, would immediately try to stop this. But this feedback loop is special. No one knows why, but it may be caused by Yūko immediately rushing into a shrine after setting off the event. Not only that, she tried to offer some money to the kami as well. By immediately breaching the sacred precincts of the shrine, Yūko, in effect, restrained the kami before they even had a chance to counteract her disturbance. This is proven by the collapse of the shrine's torii, or ceremonial gate: even the gods, who are supposed to be supernaturally powerful, are now rendered impotent. Then, why did the universe not collapse after this? Honestly, no one knows. It may be that an external being, one we cannot even start to comprehend, intervened to prevent the universal catastrophe. It may be that the universe is just so infinitely massive that such disturbances eventually die down on their own. Or maybe, just maybe, the universe has already started collapsing, and it is only a matter of time before we too are destroyed. All hail Yūko-sama, the all powerful destroyer of worlds.

Is that really a well-known phrase in Japanese? That adds a new layer of comedy I missed. I thought Mio and Yukko had seen the sky and thought it might rain. "What a gloomy day. Rainclouds in the sky and Mai forgot her homework. What else is going to go wrong?" But they were using a figure of speech to express that everything was out of balance; everyone was surprised when the downpour started.

It’s possible that the reason the universe didn’t collapse was due to the priest stepping on Yūko’s homework ruining it which prevented the universe from being destroyed and the built up power of the feedback as it was winding up to wipe out all of existence instead destroyed the shrine (and possibly the god who resides within)
