Wonderful interview. :-) Always love seeing how Mr. Briggs works on the dubbing of the various aliens, Daleks included. The BBC made a good decision when they decided to bring him into the production team a decade ago. A really invaluable voice actor, even with all the voice modulation trickery that has to be added to the performance. 8-) A weird thing I've realised: He's also played Clara, twice. First Oswin, then Clara piloting a Dalek. :-))

Here's the thing though....other Daleks have expressed emotion other than "EXTERMINATE" and "I AM A DALEK" before this episode. How about when 9th met a lonely soldier who befriended Rose and then killed itself? What about the Dalek 11 found in the asylum with Clara in it? "I AM NOT A DALEK, I AM HUMAN! REMEMBER ME. RUN!!" Also, River encountered a Dalek who easily begged for mercy 3 times!! Not to mention the surge of emotion that DIDN'T fire that gun! And even the 12th encountered a broken Dalek who saw a star born.

Two of them aren't entirely Dalek though. The one rose meets actually stole her DNA and used it to regenerate itself, giving itself emotions and empathy in the process. The same goes for Clara who wasn't a true Dalek. A Dalek that is pure will always hate a lifeform that isn't a Dalek, it's kind of one of their big character traits.

I once heard that the Daleks are scary because their unchanging, while everything els in the series changes (Doctor, Compainens, Tardis). I think that the Daleks voice being the same over all of new who is the perfect reinforcement of that.

Tino Chiko well i think that's how they did it in the classic series. the lights don't always flash at the right time, but that also happened in last week's episode.

+Lünk When they brought the Daleks back in 2005, they used to have another person pressing the button to flash the lights and Nick used to point at the man on every syllable so he knew when to press the button. I'm not sure when they changed it so Nick does all the flashing lights too.
