How do you find your melodies? At what point do you involve your harmony? What's your ratio for keeping the original idea in tact compared to either plenty of shifting or heavy re-writes? I know those are whopper answers and if you provide a link to where you have already told I am ok with that. Happy New Year to you.

Formula. It’s all formula. Trusting that formula and applying it. There’s really no other way to describe my process other than formula. However, it’s important to note that formula is developed over time, experience and exposure to excellence (training). Nothing great is easy, it all takes time…
@TheRadioAteMyTV10 ай бұрын
@@NicholasGunnMusic Any chance of a description of said formula? E=MC2 is taken so it can't be that. A2+B2=C2 wasn't even invented by Pythagoras, though he did discover our natural 12 note system, invented the words cosmos, irrational number and philosophy, and gave guitars their dots for harmonic overtones, but that formula is taken too, so Mr. Gunn, will you pull the trigger and shoot your answer for how you fire away to target your song creation? We would get a bang out of it and kill our curiosity.
@NicholasGunnMusic10 ай бұрын
@@TheRadioAteMyTV Ha, love it! All I can say is I keep making choices until those choices work. Not afraid to back up into my process, undoing ideas until I get it right and have that feeling. Counter melody plays a huge role in the formula as well though so it’s in the layers…
@TheRadioAteMyTV10 ай бұрын
@@NicholasGunnMusic I remember hearing Bryan Adams or was it John Cougar, say back in the 1980s, never be afraid to dump stuff that doesn't work in the song writing process. That shouldn't be profound but to a 17 year old it was crucial. It took many years to be comfortable with breaking the "art" I first made to make it better, but I still did it all along. (George Lucas has abused the idea.) I just lost (most of) the guilt for doing it, recognizing that all art needs polishing, and which painter was it that said it's what you take away from the work that turns a work from good to brilliant? I am always curious how others do their creative process because I have countless ways to make a song, and as my professor reminded us often in theory, all the rules in the world don't matter if doesn't sound good. Yet when I want to write a story, instead of a song, the idea always unfolds before my eyes, then the polishing later. Songs that do that for me are rare but so cool when it happens. Thanks for letting a tiny light onto your process.
