one of the most beautiful renditions of this fantastically haunting, beautiful melody by Purcell. And Spanos' lyric soprano floating heavenly above this ground bass brings depth and intensity of emotion. Kudos!!!

Nicholas's rich voice fits this aria perfectly. It is full of sorrow and longing. Bravo. (This has been one of my all-time favourite arias for as long as I can remember; and I once had to present it myself in a music exam... on the viola!) Here Nicholas is an excellent match for the famous Victoria de los Angeles 1965 version (which had been my favourite). Thanks so much!

This is not just vocally and stylistically excellent, but its musical sophistication is remarkable. Purcell is not at at all easy to handle musically. To sustain a convincing and listenable musical line at lento markings requires real musical mastery of the techniques and practices of ancient music. Bravo!

Absoltuly the most perfect work and heartbreakingly beautiful!Exceptional even for Nicholas Spanos,besides the fact that it's such a beautiful and moving piece of music! Listen to this colour of the voice which only Spanos can produce in the very beginning on 0.12.Then his breathtaking low notes on around 0.48-0.55, 0.7, 2.03! Then his fantastic transitions,high notes like on 2.49,perfect praising and cut at the right time in "Remember me"! It's something to listen to many times and savour...

Dear friend,thank you very much. I'm happy you enjoyed it. You know, I could type everything here in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS too as what you say is no exaggeration but all truth!:-)Of course,tastes differ and theoretically we can't say what is the most beautiful voice in the world as we can't hear everybody:), but it's ART! Every artist has his own fans and he is lucky if they are so faithful to him and consider his voice the most beautiful voice in the world!:-)Nicholas Spanos deserves all this!:-)

The lyrics are: "Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me; On thy bosom let me rest. More I would, but death invades me: Death is now a welcome guest. When I am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble in thy breast. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate."

A quite beautiful rendition of this difficult piece. Nicholas voice seems to lay exactly right for it,and he manges to capture the incredible moving sadness of it,and yet to float it as if it Dido were already in Heaven.He also manages to avoid the pitfall of many singers in this piece,namely he doesn't make it TOO overly mournful or heavy,nor sing it all in the lower register. It would be nice to see this on stage,but I don't think we will see a drag Dido just yet! Shame though.

Dear Christine, I like YT so much because we can express different opinions:-). My opinion is on the contrary the instruments are FOLLOWING Nicholas Spanos's wonderful speed and ENCHANCING his expresssiveness:-). I think this version is just perfect, and also the beautiful optimistic picture which reduces the feeling of being just a funeral piece:-). I think it's a rare unity of the voice and musicians in the name of art. But, of course, tastes differ:-) To my liking they are all bravissimi!

Sembra cantare seguendo un sogno ...interiorizzato a forma di preghiera laica.Colma di una malinconia consumata fino alla trasparenza vocale resa come una riflessione di uno Spirito che è già Oltre se stesso.

I think that Pandolfis Consort effectively used period instruments to delicately spin a web to catch Nicholas Spanos' notes, like morning dew.

Charming rendidtion.
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Absolutely!I already expressed it that it's extraordinary even for Nicholas Spanos. Before I'd have some problem with a man singing this,but it's baroque,and can be sung just in concert.Here sex isn't quite identified.It was normal in baroque.If women can sing men's arias,and it's regular practice why can't CTs sing such gems too?:-)Nicholas Spanos is an innovator,but actually some CTs have sung this piece before like Scholl, Vassiliev. It's not Violetta and not O mio babbino caro,so it's OK:-)
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Thank you PrimaRagazza too:-)I would just disagree with you on the point of femininity, but please don't be offended.It's just exchange of opinions:-). I would never say that Nicholas Spanos's voice is more feminine than most CTs. Pitch doesn't make anyone sound more masculine or feminine for a trained ear. He sounds as masculine as Scholl but soprano-like. It's different. There are more nuances for it than just like if it's pants it's a man and skirt-woman.Listen to this masculine sound on 0.12
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Well,I don't know what book you are reading:),but true baroque is based not only on androgynous effect but on contrasts,on counterpoint. We can discuss it much who is more convincing for what,but in general I agree with you here:-)Well,in a way any CT voice is more androgynous as it's not bass with only masculine qualities:-)but I still hear how rich in ALL nuances Spanos's voice is and how masculine it is,manlier than e.g. Cencic's though he is great too.For me Lemos has more female intonations
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more with you here. I just wonder why it's a norm for women to sing ANYTHING for women and any men's roles in drag, and for men it's practically impossible, with the only exceptions like St'Alessio or Lemos in Niobe. It would be just great:-)...It's even a rare treat to enjoy great modern countertenors with advanced technique in castrati roles where they are more credible than any women... Ah and oh, and hope for the best for my favourites for me to have more choice too:-)...
@christineannemarsden12 жыл бұрын
Pity that the instruments are not following his wonderful speed and reducing his expressiveness.
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Human voice is really the most superior instrument.For me there's nothing like the best CT voice as you know it:)Only CTs have such colours and nuances,though women have something special too:-)Are you talking about Lemos now with his "big manly chest tones"?Absolutely!I don't want to say who is superior as they are all of the same calibre and so different.Lemos is unique in his own way and sounds very manly making an impression of a woman but I take this piece isolated,just manly sung by Spanos
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Oh,sorry, typing mistake. I meant as you mentioned that Mr Spanos isn't a woman:-):"Thank God neither Spanos or Lemos are women, otherwise I wouldn't be so impressed":-) Actually, it's interesting to discuss how different people hear the same stuff. You heard here something as if Spanos tried to sing this woman's aria expressing female intonations. I have a different approach. As I said I take this piece isolated, as a concert piece where sex isn't indicated, and hear only divine male singing..
@serenaluce12 жыл бұрын
Ha, you were prepared to be unimpressed!:-)If somebody can work miracles it's Nicholas Spanos!:-)But of course, no artist can please absolutely everybody with his singing. If his voice is still appealing to YOU I advise you to listen to more of him to find new colours,and actually, some say the more they listen to him the more they like him. Thank God neither Spanos or Lemos are women, otherwise I would be so impressed:-)I find them both sound very manly but Lemos with more female intonations...
