Up next: Can Artificial Intelligence Solve Our Biggest Problems? • Can AI Solve Our Bigge...
Beyond the brains of even the most intelligent human beings lies artificial superintelligence, which will have the potential to grow infinitely intelligent at an unbelievable rate.
Most experts agree that we could see the development of superintelligence in our lifetimes, and we’re hopeful for positive outcomes, such as a cure for cancer.
On the flipside though, the future of AI also has the potential to pose serious threats to humanity.
Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and expert on AI ethics, is attempting to fathom the unfathomable so the human race can be ready.

I was hoping to find at least one fellow Isaac Arthur fan in the comments, but all I find are a ton of people worrying about friggin' Skynet. Guys. The first superhuman AI will be _barely_ smarter than a human. They probably won't even be smarter than human experts in any given field, just smarter than any single jack-of-all-trades human can be in all fields. It's not going to wake up and start finding ways to optimize itself until it turns into a god-machine, any more than smart human brains do.

We could already be 1.000.000 years ahead of this time. Just because you are living in this time doesn’t mean there weren’t many 2022 already. 2022 could have been changed many times. The only question is - would the gods let the past untouched ? The answer is no. And how the past does not affect the future ? It’s possible. Maybe I show Solidarity with retards and turned myself into something without long term memory. Or I get tested. Or I am in some kind of game in which some sort of monarchs or fascists battle me for dominance of the universe. Or, or, or. That’s what the superintelligences tell me.

Nothing in the comment section about wanting an AI girlfriend, I am impressed. Bostrum's approach to the notion of imminent superintelligence is the right one, I believe. If you go completely towards the SI side then you can shut off your humanity, and that's not a good way to prepare for SI let alone being no fun. If you go completely towards ignoring SI, you of course will be in denial and won't lay any plans for an inevitable massive shift in civilization that is going to happen.

@@tbravee 1. Assume that souls exist. Where do babies get souls? What blocks an artificial intelligence from that source? 2. Don't assume that souls exist, prove it. And while you're at it, show why souls _matter._ 3. What is the difference between calculations of feelings and actual feelings? Do _you_ have "actual" feelings? Show your work, and keep in mind that said mind is just a bunch of electrochemical impulses mediated by hormones. 4. Why do you assume that AI would try to assimilate us if we gave them independence? We've granted a lot of intelligent things independence over the millennia, and they usually don't try to assimilate their creators unless said creators abused them. 5. Why worry about robots getting offended and hurting something when we give them intelligence so much more than you worry about young adults doing the same when they're given intelligence? I mean, presumably it makes sense to worry _some_ about it and take steps to avoid it, but I've never seen anyone worried about the dangers of natural intelligence, even though we have countless examples of NIs replacing their creators, sometimes violently. Sorry that I rambled on so long. There are just a bunch of unexamined assumptions at the core of your argument that I wanted to unravel, which all lead back to that core assumption that an intelligent being which was created by computer programmers will be inherently different from one created by carnal relations. The difference doesn't come from the intellect's genesis, but from its childhood-not from its brain, but from its upbringing.

@@tbravee 1. If we can't comprehend the soul, how can you describe it, let alone say that it's present in humans, absent in hypothetical AI, and important? 2. I'd ask you to define consciousness in a way that includes neurodivergent humans but includes human-like machines, but I'm worried that that path would lead to you accidentally saying I don't have a soul. I don't think much of the concept, but it's important to you, so it's still an insult. 3. Are you saying that the soul is what makes people unique, and uniqueness is important? I agree on the second point, though not as violently as you assume, but if that's how you define the soul (which is a pretty solid definition), then artificial intelligences should be fine.
