This is why rhythm is easily half of Bass playing, if not more. Sometimes you will be amazed by how well something just played well sounds at the right time, just a walking pattern or whatever like this, it's a pentatonic, 0o-o-o- You play this and you still don't need to know about any of what you're doing yet. Technical people give me a massive headache, I don't like it. If you can't hear what needs to be played, you lack creativity or you are tone deaf then you shouldn't play Bass, or anything else. Nobody needs to reads music for this, let me practice it 2-3 times and then what is there to talk about ?.. It's just rhythm if you got it, if not then forget this genre. Rhythm is so successful in the top tier of popular music, rhythm outperforms any kind of formal education every time. I wouldn't trade the rhythmic ability of Michael Jackson for any number of music PHD's. It's a sad situation when people have none and they don't care to fix it. Nick has real pocket and you can easily hear the difference between him and someone else on Bass. He plays whatever he can imagine playing. You don't need scales anymore, not when you play by ear and this is your talent. Some people can't read music, so what ?. So, some people are wired like this and people should be understanding and not tell them they are a trash musician for not knowing how to read or write a song on paper. Everything you do is some kind of a scale yet it's irrelevant to you what other people are calling it, the words fail to describe the sounds associated with whatever it may be. Between a pentatonic, chromatic and major scale, I think you can play anything, any combination of notes. There's no reason to get all chatty about that, just play and it will work out. Bass is just not a classical solo instrument, not at all it's the opposite. It's a core rhythm instrument to accompany drums. Your solo should use a lot of rhythm, to go with the melody unless someone else is there to play bass. The easiest thing for most guys to do is call and then answer themself. Nick is having a whole dialogue between his Bass and his self.
